CURBSIDE TRASH AND RECYCLE PICK-UP Trash is picked up weekly. Trash can be put in trash cans or trash bags, not to exceed 75 pounds in weight. Recycles are picked up every OTHER week, on the same day as the trash, by an automated truck. Recycles must be placed in the green container provided by the Town. Trash/recycles should be placed curbside the night before or prior to 5:00 A.M. the morning of pick-up. ELDERLY RESIDENTS The Town has Rear Yard/Garage collection available for homes where all residents are at least 70 years old or are physically disabled. Applications and requirement details are available at the Public Works Department in Town Hall (203-271-6650). NOTE: Rear Yard/Garage recycle pick-ups occur on Tuesdays; trash is the same day as the neighborhood. HOLIDAY SCHEDULES Trash/recycles will be delayed one day during the weeks following these holidays: Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving Day. When Independence Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on weekdays, trash and recycles pick-up is delayed. Check www.CheshireCT.org for updates. WHAT IS “TRASH”? Dispose of your normal household waste in a trash can/bag. Up to FIVE cans/bags can be put out each week. FOOD WASTE, METAL COAT HANGERS, SMALL TOYS, POTS AND PANS, DIRTY OR CONTAMINATED PAPER/CARDBOARD, STYROFOAM, POLYSTYRENES Plastic bags and plastic wrap are NOT recyclable and must be thrown away. PLASTIC BAGS, SHRINKWRAP Wrap securely in several layers of newspaper; double bag BROKEN GLASS TREE LIMBS/BRANCHES Limbs/branches less than 3” in diameter and 4’ in length must be tied in bundles. Bundles may not exceed 75 pounds. Two such bundles are allowed each week. NEEDLES/LANCETS Sharps containers may be included in curbside garbage. Laundry bottles can serve provided the needles will not stick through and the lids are taped securely closed. LATEX PAINT Visit www.PaintCare.org for drop off sites that accept both latex and oil-based paints. Latex paint must be completely dry before disposal (combine with kitty litter or paint-hardening crystals). Double-bag cans of dried paint before placing curbside. Residents will be responsible if spilled paint causes damage to the road, town right-of-way, or curbside collection truck. Oil-based paints are considered hazardous waste and are accepted at Hazwaste Central; for information call 203-401-2712 or visit www.RWater.com/hazwaste. Unacceptable items for trash Items that can be recycled Furniture, demolition/building materials, and yard waste will not be picked up curbside. These and other bulky items must be brought to a transfer station or hauled away. Hazardous materials are not permitted. Dispose of your recycles in the green 96- or 64-gallon recycle container which has been assigned to your property. Empty and rinse all items for curbside collection every other week : Glass bottles/jars Metal food and beverage cans Plastics (numbers 1 through 7) Latex paint cans (cleaned) Disposable plasticware: rinsed plates, cups, cutlery Paper: newspapers, magazines, mixed papers, envelopes, telephone books, greeting cards Boxboard: tissue/cereal boxes, toilet paper rolls, cardboard egg cartons Unacceptable items for recycling Drinking glasses, plates, ceramics Light bulbs Broken glass Containers contaminated by fluids or food Waxed cardboard beverage containers Lids from glass jars or plastic bottles Corrugated cardboard Shredded paper (removed from plastic bag) Clean plastic or terra cotta planters GENERAL INFORMATION FALL LEAF COLLECTION The Town has a curbside leaf collection during the late fall. Leaves must be placed in biodegradable brown paper bags. Details are published in the local newspaper and at www.CheshireCT.org. CHRISTMAS TREE DISPOSAL The Town accepts Christmas trees on one Saturday in January. The date is published after Christmas in the local newspaper and at www.CheshireCT.org. The Cheshire High School Ram Band offers Christmas tree pick-up as a fundraiser. For information, go to www.RamBand.com. SPRING STREET SWEEPING The Town will sweep sand from Town roads each spring. Residents should sweep sand from sidewalks, driveway aprons, and grass. The schedule is published in the local newspaper and at www.CheshireCT.org. ELECTRONICS RECYCLING One Saturday each fall and spring, the Town offers an Electronics Recycling event. In general, anything which uses a cord or batteries is acceptable. Check www.CheshireCT.org for acceptable items, dates, times, and drop-off location. Proof of residency must be shown. GOODWILL DONATION CENTER There is a Goodwill donation center at 1032 South Main Street, (203) 250-1444. For a list of accepted items, visit www.GoodWill.org. WHAT ABOUT OTHER ITEMS? A privately-operated transfer station, Central CT Recycling and Transfer, is located at 22 Burton Drive, Cheshire. There are fees for some items. Call 203-272-4039 for hours and information. This is a drop-off facility that accepts batteries, anti-freeze, motor oil, electronics, large limbs/branches, mattresses/box springs, metal items, tires, furniture, grass, leaves, yard waste, etc.
