Numbers are an important part of our annual report. Numbers tell us how we’re performing for our patients, where we can improve our services, and what kind of impact we have on the community. For example, this past year we had cause to celebrate as 2010 marked our fifth year in the regional medical center, our first year with inpatient beds for our new Senior Pathways program, and the formation of several key partnerships and acquisitions. We were pleased to open the 2,500 square foot Women’s Health Institute, a beautiful, comfortable and inviting resource center that provides education and support to women of all ages. And, of course, our statistics continue to improve as our region expands – 113,646 outpatient visits, 41,126 patients treated for emergencies, 128 open heart surgeries, and 918 babies born in 2010. Our Report to the Community may focus on numbers, but it’s our patients that are the real story of Carson Tahoe. After all, our patients are anything but numbers to us … they’re our friends, neighbors and family, and we pledge to always treat them with the dignity and care they deserve. Community Support & Education Every day, thousands of grateful patients move through the Carson Tahoe system. Through community initiatives and education, we are leading the way to a healthier community, and ensuring that each and every patient receives the best possible care. It all starts by collaborating with community businesses and institutions. Together, we’re listening to the community’s needs and taking action through smart healthcare decisions that continue to strengthen our healthcare now … and well into the future. We define community benefits as: improving access to health services; reducing geographic, financial or cultural barriers to health services; enhancing public health; advancing general knowledge; helping train future healthcare professionals; conducting research; maintaining negative margin inpatient service lines to prevent gaps in service; and supporting community organizations. Contributions to Community Health 2010 Carson Tahoe is dedicated to providing for the health and well-being of our community through our continued commitment toward charitable care. The ability to provide assistance to those who cannot pay for medical care is a direct result of Carson Tahoe’s sound business decisions and careful financial planning. Beyond the care we provide within our hospital walls, we are also strongly dedicated to providing educational resources and wellness programs and services to the entire community. And looking forward to 2012, we are excited about becoming one of only 114 hospitals in the nation to have the “Baby Friendly” designation. 2010-2011 R E PO RT TO TH E C O M M U N ITY 3 I n 2 010 , w e i n v e s t e d ov e r $18 m i ll i o n i n c a p i ta l eq u i p m e n t, fac i l i t i e s a n d I n f o r m at i o n T ec h n o lo gy. Financial Stewardships Despite the ongoing challenges of a struggling economy, Carson Tahoe maintained a strong financial position, closing the year with a positive operating margin. We also continued to meet or exceed all bond compliance requirements, improving our bond rating with Standard & Poors to a BBB+ stable outlook. These accomplishments are quite impressive considering the norm for hospitals today trends toward a negative financial outlook. As Carson Tahoe looks ahead, we are committed to reinvesting every dollar back into our community through new technology, state-of-the-art equipment, and needed services. Above all, we are dedicated to maintaining the fiscal responsibility necessary to continue our role as the strong healthcare provider our community deserves. Investing in Technology Great healthcare never rests. At Carson Tahoe, we strive to provide the latest technology and procedures to ensure that our patients are receiving the best possible care. Investing in technology improves our efficiency and effectiveness in all manners of treatment. It can lead to less invasive procedures that result in greater comfort for patients and quicker recovery times. And it gives our entire community peace of mind knowing that no matter what medical needs may arise, Carson Tahoe is ready with the most comprehensive care and innovative technologies available. In matters of the heart, Carson Tahoe is world-class. Our nationally acclaimed comprehensive cardiac services continue to improve and expand. For starters, we have the only Healthgradesawarded, five star open-heart surgery program in Nevada. We are the first “cath” lab in the US to utilize the XPER/Xcelera advanced cardiology imaging system. This cutting edge technology provides clearer images for more accurate diagnoses and procedures, a true technological asset to our skilled interventional cardiologists during procedures such as traditional and radial angioplasty. Carson Tahoe continues to make the transition to Electronic Health Records (EHR). EHR allows Carson Tahoe to accurately, efficiently and confidentially document every patient encounter throughout the patient’s lifetime, ensuring a complete and thorough medical history. Our EHR technology lets physicians, patients and healthcare providers share access of current, comprehensive health information while adhering to all federal privacy regulations. 4 2010-2011 R E PO RT TO TH E C O M M U N ITY A n a d d i t i o n a l $ 2 5 0 , 0 0 0 w a s d e d i c a t e d t o t h e e x p a n s i o n o f p h y s i c i a n s e r v i c e s f o r o u r c o m m u n i t y . Community Health Needs Assessment We were named the Healthcare reform law mandates Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) every three years. At Carson Tahoe, we are proud to be taking a proactive approach to the assessment of our healthcare system. For instance, we conducted a CHNA in 2010 prior to this mandate, and in doing so have already identified opportunities – and taken action to address these needs. Some of these include: 13th most beautiful •• the opening of 2 cost-effective clinics inside the local Wal-Mart stores •• the recruitment of physician specialists hospital in the nation. Accessing Appropriate Levels of Care When it comes to a patient’s health or the health of loved ones, choosing the appropriate level of care in any medical situation – be it a stroke, a fever or an injury – can be critical to ensuring the best possible care. By providing regional access to acute care clinics, urgent cares, primary care physicians and 24 hour emergency services, Carson Tahoe’s comprehensive system allows patients to access appropriate care, no matter what part of the region they call home. More importantly, over the past year we have reached out to our community to educate them on these available services. In addition, we have provided a blueprint for each level of care to instill confidence in our community’s ability to choose their care appropriately. 2010-2011 R E PO RT TO TH E C O M M U N ITY 5 C a rs o n Ta h o e R eg i o n a l H e a lt h c a r e F o u n dat i o n i s b u i lt o n a c o m m u n i t y o f s u p p o r t. Foundation Year in Review Through the Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Foundation, gifts – great and small – have been raised by grateful patients, dedicated staff, and passionate community members. These generous gifts are the lifeblood of our healthcare system. They enable us to provide healthcare excellence every day, and give us the ability to build toward an even brighter future. This past year marked a milestone for the Foundation – the completion of the capital campaign for the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all of our community members that provided the funding to build the cancer center and ultimately provide hope and healing for thousands of cancer patients. With the Cancer Center capital campaign realized, the Foundation Board introduced new fundraising initiatives for capital equipment purchases, the Women’s Health Institute, and the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative. This past year proved a successful one, with $723,668 in funds received. In total, 683 donors supported the Foundation through 2,676 gift transactions. We are proud to report that Carson Tahoe employee donors numbered 86 individuals. We received 59 in-kind donations for our live and silent auctions including the donation of a 2010 Toyota Corolla for our Celebrity Docs raffle. Our four fundraising events brought in $124,234 in income, with additional contributions coming from restricted contributions and direct support from Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare. 750 We’ve performed over open-heart surgeries since the program began in 2006. 6 2010-2011 R E PO RT TO TH E C O M M U N ITY T h r o u g h yo u r g e n e r o s i t y, t h e F o u n dat i o n h a s r a i s e d i n e xc e s s o f $ 9 m i ll i o n ov e r t h e l a s t 12 y e a rs . 2010 CTRH Foundation Revenue by Account Total = $723,668 $49,093 Dividends & Interest $154,551 CTRH Support $124,234 Special Events $20,000 Women’s Health Institute $48,941 Other Contributions $46,260 Cancer Center Campaign $5,720 Shining Star Programs $35,479 Memorials & Honors $5,000 Nursing Scholarship $5,669 Foundation Endowment $30,410 Annual Fund $45,620 $64,415 Merriner Cottages Cancer Resource Center $18,425 Merriner $69,851 Endowment Special Purpose & Capital Equipment Foundation Board of Directors Officers Soraya Aguirre, President Genevieve Frederick, Vice-President Carolyn Knutson, Secretary Bob Sewell, Treasurer Directors Ex-Officio Members Mary Caporale Paul Chelew Susan Crowell Craig Ganger Jenn King Janice McCauley Niki Neilon Vicki O’Shaughnessy Steve Tackes Kathy Tatro Ed Epperson, CEO Jo Saulisberry, CTRH Trustee Delyse Mills, CTRH Auxiliary 2010-2011 R E PO RT TO TH E C O M M U N ITY 7 W e w i s h to t h a n k t h e h u n d r e d s o f C a rs o n Ta h o e Fr i e n d s w h o s u p p o r t e d t h e F o u n dat i o n i n 2 010 t h r o u g h d o n at i o n s a n d pa r t i c i pat i o n i n o u r s p ec i a l e v e n ts . 2010 Giving — Gifts, Memorials & Grants Gifts, Memorials & Grants Abacus Home Appraisal Abbott Laboratories Inc. Carson Tahoe Cancer Center To earn accreditation from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC), a facility must meet their rigorous quality standards, a process that the Center must undergo every three years. 2010 marked just such a year, and Carson Tahoe Cancer Center succeeded in retaining its accreditation plus commendations. Criteria set by the CoC include: providing access to the full scope of multidisciplinary services required to screen, diagnose, treat, rehabilitate and support patients with cancer and their families; provide prevention and early detection services to the community; provide services on site, by referral or through coordination with other facilities or agencies; and submit data annually to the national Cancer Data Base. Together, we are in the fight to win. Carson Tahoe provides many services and resources to ensure our community has easy access to leading edge cancer care. The 35,000 square foot freestanding Cancer Center defines “comprehensive,” thanks to its two full-time medical and radiation oncology private practices, state-ofthe-art technology, and extensive support services. Our community outreach is an ongoing effort that includes a community outreach nurse, free “Cancer 101” seminars, and an Institutional Review Board (IRB). Our clinical trials nurse reviews all proposed research and clinical trails conducted by Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare. In addition, they assist medical staff and oversee the patient navigation program. Other features of the Cancer Center that are critical to the diagnosis, treatment and care of patients include: an outpatient ambulatory infusion center; a tumor registry; the Merriner Cottages; and the nationally recognized Carson Tahoe Cancer Resource Center. 10 2010-2011 R E PO RT TO TH E C O M M U N ITY In 2010, the Cancer Center treated 644 newly diagnosed patients. Healthcare Navigators – Leading the Way With early intervention, treatment and support, cancer is treatable. And no one has to do it alone. Our Healthcare Navigators assist cancer patients at every stage of care, providing support and guidance throughout the healthcare process. Regardless of the situation, a patient’s personal navigator will listen to their concerns, provide resources, and point the patient in the right direction. In a time when cancer patients need it most, this personalized approach to care lets patients know that Carson Tahoe is there for them every step of the way. The New Women’s Health Institute In 2011, a community resource that encourages and supports health and well-being in all women in our community became a reality. With the opening of the Women’s Health Institute, women and their families gain access to a wealth of wellness resources dedicated to education and empowerment. This one-stop shop for women’s health information has proven invaluable to cancer patients – along with other important services such as OB/GYN and heart health – seeking answers from a women’s perspective, providing a continuum of care through every stage of a woman’s life.
