Million Pollinator Garden Challenge
http://millionpollinatorgardens.org/
A campaign to register a million public and private gardens and
landscapes to support pollinators.
Pollinators Need Your Help
Pollinators are responsible for 1 out of 3 bites of food we take each day,
and yet pollinators are at critical point in their own survival. Many
reasons contribute to their recent decline. We know for certain, however,
that more nectar and pollen sources provided by more flowering plants
and trees will help improve their health and numbers. Increasing the
number of pollinator-friendly gardens and landscapes will help revive the
health of bees, butterflies, birds, bats and other pollinators across the
country.

“Plant The Seeds & Grow With Us”
Winter was just ushered in, even though the thermometer is in the 50’s now. My
bulbs are peeping thru the ground, thinking it is spring and I already received a
seed catalogue in the mail. We have continued to plant our seeds over the years
and I was delighted to have attended two Garden Club Anniversaries this fall.
Quiet Dell Garden Club in Monongahela-Cheat District, celebrated their 50th
Anniversary year, November 5th. President Gwen Kohut introduced 3 founding
members of the club that were present – Priscilla Bastin, Catherine Benedum and
Luella Everitt. What a joy to meet these ladies and find them still interested in
their Garden Club. I think that says a lot for our organization.
Beverly Hills Garden Club, Huntington, Ohio-Guyan District, celebrated their 75th
Anniversary December 1st. Sandy Robinson, NGC President attended from
Kentucky. What an honor to have our NGC President attending this celebration.
She was introduced by Beverly Hills Garden Club co-Presidents, Janet Sheridan
and Sharon Gross A review of the Club’s past history was given. It is always
amazing to hear about club projects over the years and realize the impact they have
had in their communities.
I had a tour of the National Garden Clubs Headquarters, located at the Missouri
Botanical Gardens, during the NGC Fall Board meeting in St. Louis. It was nice
to meet the staff at the Headquarters and visit the Members Services store. We had
lunch at the Cardinal Club, Busch Stadium, and a walking tour of Citygarden. I
was able to attend seven of the nine District meetings this past September and
October. Thank you all for your hospitality both to me, Vivian Shomo and Becky
Amorese, who traveled with me. I enjoy hearing about all the programs and
projects each of your clubs are involved in.
I hope you are planning your “planting for pollinator” garden for this summer.
Remember the Million Garden Challenge and register your landscape on the
S.H.A.R.E. map. Visit: http://millionpollinatorgardens.org to learn more and get
started. When asked, be sure and tell them National Garden Clubs, Inc. sent you.
The West Virginia Garden Club, Inc. Convention will be held at Stonewall Resort
on April 1-3, 2016. I hope you and your club are making plans to attend. I look
forward to seeing you all in April.

WORKSHOPS
Making Gardening More Accessible
Carmen Fullmer will pr esent ways that will allow people to gar den even
though they have restrictions. Many people want to garden, but find it tough to do because of a
limitation, disability, illness or aging. This presentation will sow some seeds of wisdom about
assistive technology tools, adaptive methods and resources that can help us grow through
accessible gardening.
Carmen Fullmer is an Assistive Technology Specialist for the West Virginia
Assistive Technology System at the Center for Excellence in Disabilities at West Virginia
University. She earned a Master of Science degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from WVU.
Carmen enjoys developing resources and working on two accessible agriculture projects –
West Virginia AgrAbility and Green Thumbs, Healthy Joints.

Do orchids hedge their bets? You Bet!
And our spreading pogonia bet-hedges with the best!
An interesting and colorful explanation of the indigenous wild orchids that grow
in West Virginia. She explains their development and how they grow together – making for
a stronger and more beautiful flower.
Dr. Gregg is Pr ofessor Emer ita of Biology after teaching at West Vir ginia
Wesleyan College for 37 years. She is currently Curator of the George B. Rossbach Herbarium and Director of the Greenhouse. She earned her B.A. degree from Emory University
and a Ph. D. in Biology from the University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL. Her course specialties were Plant Systematics, Microbiology, and Experimental Biology, and co-leading
numerous tropical ecology study courses in Jamaica, Belize, and the Peruvian Amazon.
Long interested in the biology of orchids, she has published 20 scientific articles in peerreviewed journals and has presented her work at international, national, and regional meetings. Her orchid research has contributed to the management of orchid populations on the
Monongahela National Forest, at Canaan Valley State Park, in The Nature Conservancy’s
Green Swamp Preserve, North Carolina, and at Morningside Nature Center, Gainesville,
Florida. She continues to explore reproductive and population biology of orchids, and has
recently co-authored a floristic study of a species diverse meadow in Barbour County. With
a grant from WV’s Higher Education Policy Commission Division of Science and Research,
she is data-basing and imaging the 25,000+ specimens in the Rossbach Herbarium.
West Virginia Botanical Garden in the Fourth Dimension
The program will tell us how the West Virginia Botanical Garden has grown and changed
over time and what the plans are for the future. This will include the impacts that many
people and organizations have had, including the West Virginia Garden Club.
George W Longenecker – Executive Director, West Virginia Botanic Garden, Inc.; Professor Emeritus of Landscape Architecture, West Virginia University. Mr. Longenecker received a B.S. degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Wisconsin and a
Master of Fine Arts degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Illinois. Before coming to West Virginia University in 1966 he was Assistant Director of the John J.
Tyler Arboretum in Lima, PA. He is a licensed Landscape Architect and served on the West
Virginia State Board of Landscape Architects. Mr. Longenecker came to WVU in the first
year of the onset of the Landscape Architecture Program and although he taught many of the
courses over the years, his primary focus was on plant materials, planting design and AutoCAD courses. He developed an Interior Plantscaping course and also an assigned topics
class on Botanic Garden Development that students who were interested could spend time
working with him on the beginnings of the West Virginia Botanic Garden . During several
semesters this class built the Eclectic Garden, the Shade Garden and a shade house for growing plants. The WVBG was actually started in the 1980’s as an organization and for many
years Mr. Longenecker served as Executive Director and President of the Board of
10
Directors. In 2005 he retired from WVU to focus on the realization of the recently completed
master plan for the WVBG as site manager as well as Executive Director. For more information
about the WVBG please visit www.wvbg.org. He has also served as an instructor at the annual
Landscape Design Short Course organized by the West Virginia Garden Club every spring since
it was begun at WVU and is an Honorary Life Member of the WV Garden Club. He has served
as the Landscape Advisor at Fallingwater, a Frank Lloyd Wright house, since 1988 where he
has spent one day a week during the summer months working with the Summer Landscape
Interns. His special interests include the study and photographing of Frank Lloyd Wright
architecture and the study of plants and ecology and the proper use of plants in design.
His pet peeve is the improper pruning of plants by those that do not take into account the
individual character of different plants. “When done properly one should not be able to tell a
shrub has been pruned, (with the exception of rigorous renewal pruning).”
Small Garden Movement
A lifelong West Virginian, Commissioner of Agriculture Walt Helmick brings the West
Virginia Department of Agriculture decades of private business and public service experience.
His primary goal in office is to revive local commercial agriculture so that West Virginia can
produce more of its own food - and keep more of its food dollars in-state. Helmick has held five
different elective offices, ranging from the Pocahontas County School Board to
the West Virginia State Senate, where he served as Finance Chair for eight years.
He also sat on the Senate Ag Committee for 24 years. He owns and operates a
water bottling plant and lodge in Minnehaha Springs with his wife, Rita, has been
a licensed auctioneer, and is an expert welder.

Woodland
Oaks Garden
The Woodland Oaks Garden Club, the Country Road Garden Club and West
Virginia State Garden Club President Judy Guye Swanson were in Oak Hill
to help dedicate a bench and memorial garden in remembrance of James E.
and Loretta Ferri Lively at the opening of the Oak Leaf ceremonies on
Saturday, Sept. 5, 2015 at the Lively Family Amphitheater.
Loretta had a love for gardening, beautiful flowers and nature. She was a
charter member of Woodland Oaks Garden Club, which was established in
1959. Because she helped establish the club, the beautification of Oak Hill
continues.
She served as president of Woodland Oaks Garden Club and the West
Virginia Garden Club. At the time of her death, she was serving as finance
chairman, and parliamentarian of the State Garden Club.
She was a member of the Golden Circle of National Garden Clubs, which
means she had served at least 25 years on the national board of directors. As
a tribute to Mrs. Lively’s work, West Virginia Garden Clubs established a
memorial fund for her to create a garden around the bench that was
purchased by Lively Insurance employees for Loretta and Jim Lively.

Beautiful Gardens are a work of Heart!
This photo was summited by Eve Southhall
of Hill and Hollow Garden Club
This photo taken by Eve brought to mind an Emily Dickenson Poem
"Nature" is what we see—
The Hill—the Afternoon—
Squirrel—Eclipse— the Bumble bee—
Nay—Nature is Heaven—
Nature is what we hear—
The Bobolink—the Sea—
Thunder—the Cricket—
Nay—Nature is Harmony—
Nature is what we know—
Yet have no art to say—
So impotent Our Wisdom is
To her Simplicity.
