A. Piecing the Shoo-Fly Blocks
For one block,
1. For each Shoo-Fly block, pair one tan fabric A square with one blue fabric A square,
right sides together. Draw a line diagonally from corner to corner. Stitch 1/4” from both
sides of the line. Press the square to set the seams. Cut apart on the solid drawn line.
Press seams toward the blue fabric. Repeat for a total of four half-square triangles.
2. Arrange four tan fabric B squares, 1 blue B square, and the four half-square triangles
according to the Block Assembly Diagram. Sew together in rows, pressing seams toward
the tan fabric B squares.
3. Make a total of 30 blocks.
B. Assembling the Quilt
1. Lay out the Shoo-Fly blocks in six rows of five
blocks each. Place blue (C) squares in alternate
rows. Assemble the sash rows by alternately joining tan stripe D sashing strips with the gold print E
sashing posts. Complete the rows by adding assorted blue fabric F setting triangles and G corner
triangles. Press seams toward sashing strips.
2. Trim and square up quilt edges if desired.
Be sure to leave a ¼” seam line all around.
3. Sew the tan stripe 2” wide strips together
end-to-end. Make four pairs. To determine length
of side borders measure through quilt center. Cut
borders to length. Sew to sides of quilt. Press
seams toward borders. Measure through quilt
center to determine length of top and bottom
borders. Cut borders to length and sew to quilt,
again pressing seams toward borders.
4. Sew the blue & gold stripe 8” wide strips together end-to-end. Try to match the stripe repeat
in order to disguise the seam. Make four pairs. To
determine length of side borders measure through
quilt center. Cut borders to length. Sew to sides
of quilt. Press seams toward inner borders. Measure through quilt center to determine length of top and bottom borders.
Cut borders to length and sew to quilt, again pressing seams toward inner borders.
C. Finishing the Quilt
1. Layer the lining, batting, and quilt top. Baste.
Quilt in-the-ditch around the block patches and4052-0110 along the sashes and borders. Quilt motifs
in the C patches if desired. Bind the quilt with the gold print.
