One of the great features of Naviance is the ability to search di#erent career possibilities. One way we do this with students is by having the students complete the Career Cluster Finder. Career clusters are a way of grouping careers with common features and skills and that typically require similar education and training The Cluster Finder helps students learn what career clusters may be a good match based on activities that interest the student, personal qualities that he/she has and subjects the student enjoys studying in school. This week in our lesson with 7th grade, we had the students take the Career Cluster Finder and they added any of the clusters that were of interest to them to a list that is saved on Naviance. This is a great feature with Naviance. The students can go back at any time in the future and review and/or edit their results. We feel that taking the time to explore clusters can be a useful way to find a good career match, especially if students have general areas of interest but are not sure what specific careers match those interests. Career clusters http://abmsnews.weebly.com/blog/january-22-2016 Page 2 of 5 January 22, 2016 - Aubry Bend Middle School Weekly Newsletter 2/5/16, 10:19 AM can also help a student better understand how his/her coursework in school can prepare you for certain types of careers. Since Naviance is a web-based program, students can access it from home or school. Students are always welcome to utilize the college and career search tools provided to look into possible college and career choices. Naviance is a great resource for you and your child to explore. I have to admit that I made up the topic for this column. I’m not sure there is even a diagnosis of teen phone addiction – other than by teachers and parents – but there is a serious concern among the adult generation about the future of meaningful, personal, social interactions. This column is based upon experience and professional opinion with a little mom experience thrown in for good measure. The last couple of columns have been about risks…the risk to let our kids fail and learn how to handle it…the risk to solve their own friendship issues. Over winter break, I spent a day or so mapping out the topics I wanted to write about this semester and sketching out some outlines. The first two topics previously mentioned were topics I regularly talk about with parents one-to-one, but “phone addiction” has become even more popular in the past year or so. For the past couple of weeks, I have been observing life inside and outside of ABMS in relation to this topic, and it’s pretty amazing. We have done a “recalibration” with our kids at ABMS reminding them of our expectations and defining appropriate use of devices used during school. They have responded well. They’re not perfect; we are smart enough to know that they won’t follow the rules to the letter of the law, but teachers and students, alike, are more aware and more responsive to appropriate use during school. Outside of school (and even in the car lane), I’ve noticed that kids aren’t the only ones addicted to the instant-gratification of information from their devices. Adults of every age are also glued to their devices. The million dollar question, however, is how to strike the balance for everyone so that we take the fight out of the http://abmsnews.weebly.com/blog/january-22-2016 Page 4 of 5 January 22, 2016 - Aubry Bend Middle School Weekly Newsletter 2/5/16, 10:19 AM expectations. Here are some ideas: It’s never too late to set or reset expectations for device use. It’s perfectly fine to set the limit to 7:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. Have a designated place for the phone to be plugged in at night – NOT in the student’s bedroom. Studies have shown that students’ sleep is interrupted by the buzz, vibration or tone, even if they aren’t checking it or “waking up.” Model the behavior you ask your kids to exhibit. If you don’t want phones at meal time, don’t have yours anywhere near the table. Model the social expectations at all times. Monitor your student’s activity. They are minors. There is no reasonable expectation of “privacy” for a child. It is our responsibility as parents to monitor and teach. If my kids misused their phones, I took them away. Period. I don’t have to explain myself. I’m the parent. Openly share your expectations for communication, conversation, and social interactions. Model those behaviors and create opportunities for your kids to practice. Try just one of these ideas for a couple of weeks and see what kind of changes it makes in the lives of your kids and your family. Have a great week! Diana Tate, Principal SHARE Comments are closed.
