Thetitle,“RecitationBook,”impliesasetoflessons.Idon’twanttosayexplicitlywhateach“lesson” means,butthetitlesofthepiecescirclearoundthethemeofdeath,whichformeimpliesthepassingof theold,andthecomingofthenew.” RichardStraussfinishedthescoreoftheFestmusikderStadtWien-FestiveMusicfortheCityof Vienna-onJanuary14,1943.ThescoreisdedicatedtotheViennaCityCouncilingratitudeforhaving beenawardeditsBeethovenPrizethepreviousyear.WrittenfortheViennaTrumpetCorps,thepiece wasoriginallyscoredfortentrumpets,seventrombones,twotubas,andtimpani.Straussconductedthe work’spremiereintheFestivalHalloftheViennaRathausonApril9,1943.Tendayslater,hemadea muchshorterversion,thisFanfare. EighteenyearsafterthedeathofCarlMariavonWeber,apatrioticmovementinGermanyresulted inthetransferenceofhisremainstohisnativeland.OnDecember14,1844,theremainsofCarlMaria vonWeberweremovedfromLondon,wherehehaddied,toGermany.Wagnercomposed TrauersinfonieforthetorchlightprocessiontoWeber’sfinalrestingplace,theCatholicCemeteryin Friedrichstadt. Aspartofhismusicalremembrance,WagnerarrangedseveralportionsofWeber’s operaEuryantheforalargewindband.Thiswindbandwasaccompaniedduringthefuneralprocession by20drums.ThefirstpartofTrauersinfonieisanarrangementofmusicfromtheoverture toEuryanthewhichrepresentsthevisionofEmma’sspiritintheopera.Themainsectionoftheworkis takenfromthecavatinaHierdichtamQuell,thetextofwhichcontainsnumerousreferencestodeath.The codacomesfromapassageinActIIthatrecallstheopening“spiritmusic.” WagneramassedallofthemilitarybandsaroundDresdenfortheoccasion,andwasgratifiedby theeffect.HeremainedfondoftheworkthroughouthislifeandinMeinLeben,hewrote,“Ihadnever beforeachievedanythingthatcorrespondedsoperfectlytoitspurpose.” HoldFastYourDreamsisgratefullydedicatedtoLindaStrommenandtheIndianaUniversity WindEnsemble.WhenIwascomposingthepiece,mydearfriend,Linda,whohadalsocommissionedme towritemyfirstoboeconcerto,askedmeifImightwritethesecondoboeconcertoasatributetoher mother,Ellen.Ilovedtheidea.Inaddition,IwasinspiredbyLouiseDriscoll’spoem,“HoldFastYour Dreams,”anupliftingpoemcelebratinggenerosityandhope.Thesecondmovementisaboutthose momentsinlife,suchasthetragiclossofalovedone,whichisfilledwithshock,surprise,andanalmost agonizedquestioning.Thefinalmovementisthesummationofalifewell-lived,filledwithpeaceandlove, akeensenseofspirituality,andanembracingspirit. (notebythecomposer) ProgramNotes Thesourcesthatgiverisetoapieceofmusicaremanyanddeep.Itispossibletodescribethe technicalaspectsofawork–itsconstructionprinciples,itsorchestration–butnearlyimpossibletowrite ofitssoulnatureexceptthroughhintsandsuggestions. TherootsofSymphonyNo.4aremany.Thecentraldrivingforceisthespontaneousriseofthe impulsetoshoutforthejoyoflife.IfeelitisthepowerfulvoiceoftheEarththatcomestomefrommy adoptedwesternMontana,andthehighplainsandmountainsofcentralIdaho.Mypersonalexperienceof thevoiceisoneofbeinghelplessandtornopenbythepowerofthethingthatwantstobeexpressed– thewelling-upshoutthatcannotbedenied.Iamsetaquiverandamforcedtoshoutandsing.The responseinthevoiceoftheEarthistheansweringshoutofthanksgiving,andtheshoutofpraise. Outofthis,thehymntune“OldHundred,”severalotherhymntunes(theBachchorales“Only TrustingodtoGuideYou”and“ChristWhoMakesUsHoly”),andoriginalmelodieswhicharehymn-like innature,formthebackboneofSymphonyNo.4. Toexplainthepresenceofthesehymns,atleastinpart,andtohintatthelifeoftheSymphony,I mustsaysomethingaboutmylong-timefascinationwithAbrahamLincoln.FromCarlSandburg’s monumentalAbrahamLincoln,Ioffertwoquotes.ThefirstisadescriptionofLincolnindeathbyhisclose friendDavidR.Locke: “Isawhim,orwhatwasmortalofhim,inhiscoffin.Thefacehadan expressionofabsolutecontent,orrelief,atthrowingoffaburdensuchasfew menhavebeencalledontobear–aburdenwhichfewmencouldhaveborne. Ihaveseenthesameexpressiononhislivingfaceonlyafewtimes,when afteragreatcalamityhehadcometogreatvictory.Itwasthelookofaworn mansuddenlyrelieved.WilkesBoothdidAbrahamLincolnthegreatest servicemancouldpossibledoforhim–hegavehimpeace” Thesecond,referringtothepassagethroughthecountryfromWashington,D.C.toSpringfield, IllinoisofthecoffinbearingLincoln’sbody: “TotherotundaofOhio’scapitol,onamoundofgreenmossdottedwith whiteflowers,restedthecoffinonApril28,while8,000personspassedby eachhourfrom9:30inthemorningtillfourintheafternoon.Inthechanging red-goldofarollingprairiesunset,totheslowexultationofbrasses rendering“OldHundred,”andthemuffledboomofminuteguns,thecoffin wascarriedoutoftherotundaandtakentothefuneraltrain.” Forme,Lincoln‘slifeanddeathareascriticaltodayastheyweremorethanacenturyago.He remainsamodelforthisage.Lincolnmaintainedinhispersonthetremendousstruggleofopposites raginginthecountryinhistime.Hewasinwardlyopentotheboilingchaos,outofwhichheforgedthe frameworkofanewunifyingidea.Itworehimdownandkilledhim,asitworeandkilledthehundredsof thousandsofsoldiersinthecivilwar,asithascontinuedtowearandkillbythemillionsuptothepresent day.ConfirmedintheworldbyLincolnwastheunshakableideaoftheunityofthehumanrace,andby extensiontheunityofalllife,andbyfurtherextension,theunityofalllifewithallmatter,withallenergy, andwiththesilentandseeminglyemptyandunfathomablemysteryofourorigins. William'sattendedBookerT.WashingtonHighSchoolforthePerformingandVisualArtswhere hewasgiventheopportunitytoplayviolinatCarnegieHallwiththeorchestraprogram.Followinghis freshmanyear,WilliamattendedArlingtonMartinHighschoolwhereheparticipatedinbothbandand orchestra.HecompletedhishighschoolyearsasasenioratArlingtonHighSchoolwherehealso participatedinthebandandorchestralprograms.WilliamwasselectedfortheAll-StateBandthree timesandwasprincipaloboeinthe6AHighSchoolAllStateBandhissenioryear.Hewasathree-year memberoftheGreaterDallasYouthOrchestraservingasaco-principalhissenioryear. WilliamiscurrentlyastudentattheUniversityofTexasArlingtonservingasprincipaloboeinthe WindSymphony.HestudiesoboewithProfessorRogeneRusselloftheDallasOperaOrchestra.Healsois principalintheNewTexasSymphonyOrchestrainDallasandplaysEnglishHornfortheNortheast Orchestra. WilliamisapassionateoboeandviolinteacherintheArlingtonareateachingchildrenofthe juniorhighandhighschoolages.HeperformsonaLoree125thanniversaryRoyaloboeandaStainer copyviolinmadecirca1850.Williamwouldliketodedicatethisperformancetohismother.Thechoiceto playtheEwazenconcertowasmadewithhismotherinmindduetothemeaningbehindthepiece. UTA WIND SYMPHONY TheUTArlingtonWindSymphonyistheselectwindandpercussionensembleatUTArlington. ConductedbyDr.DouglasStotter,theensemblehasperformedatnumerousconventionsoftheCollege BandDirectorsNationalAssociation,mostrecentlyin2016andtheTexasMusicEducatorsAssociation, mostrecentlyin2012and2017.Inaddition,theWindSymphonyhastouredextensivelythroughout Texas,Mexico,andhasperformedinCarnegieHallinNewYorkCity. TheWindSymphony’slatestcompactdiscfeaturingclassicsofthewindchambermusicrepertoire, Serenade,wasreleasedbyMarkRecordsinthefallof2015.ThisisthesecondCDreleasedbyDr.Stotter andtheUTArlingtonWindSymphony,joiningCeremonial,whichwasreleasedin2012.Bothdiscsare availableoniTunesandNaxos.TheirthirdCD,Celebration,willbereleasedSummer,2017. Theensembleisalsoactivelyinvolvedinpromotingandcommissioningnewpiecesforwindband.
