Message from the Leadership Team Dear Parents and Guardians, Unbelievably, it is December already and the holidays are right around the corner! The Forest Green team would like to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season with your family and those close to you. Forest Green School December 2016 Newsletter We would also like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the staff, who also find time to have some fun with our students. Kids are already wearing their Santa hats or reindeer ears while some staff have already prepared their Christmas sweater. The art projects have changed to reflect the season and our students hope for some snow. The choir sounds amazing as they practice their songs with Ms. Jenkins in the new music space. The library is finally open and beautifully decorated for staff and students to enjoy. Each day we see staff making a difference in the lives of our kids. Our parents and volunteers are another reason to celebrate. Each day we are fortunate to have a number of volunteers in our building contributing directly to classrooms or programs such as mentorship and the fruit bowls. With the support of our community members, our students school experience is greatly enriched. We look forward to sharing in the continued success of our students in the new year! Happy Holidays, The Forest Green Staff Pennies for the Playground! If you don't know what to do with those pennies you have, we would love to gather them up and put them towards our new playground! There will be a big change jar in the new library and we would love for you to come on in and have a look at our new space and drop off your pennies. Of course we would except all spare change! We will continue to run this for the whole month of December. Interested in staying connected? Check out our new social media! As the school phone is a business phone, we encourage our students to only use it in the case of an emergency. We appreciate your help with this. School fees were due September 30, 2016. If you have not yet paid your school fees, please contact Mrs. Buchaski to make arrangements as soon as possible. http://forestgreen.psd70.ab.ca/ Page 3 Volunteers Needed for the Mentorship Program This year Forest Green has continued and built on the amazing success of our in – school mentorship program. We ask that our Volunteers commit to one hour per week in order to build a positive relationship with a child on a 1-1 basis. Mentorship takes place on school site and within school hours. The main focus of the mentorship program will be to support and encourage the development of a trusting relationship between a student and an adult community member. We believe that a sense of belonging to family, school, and community is necessary and it contributes to the resiliency of our learners. Mentoring is an incredibly rewarding way to involve yourself in your community! If you would like to participate or need more information, please contact Jennifer Goulden at the school before 1 pm (780-963-7366). Elf Junior at Horizon Stage As part of Forest Green's cultural enrichment program, our kindergarten to grade 3 classes will be attending a play presented by the SGCHS Theatre Arts students. The show, entitled Elf Jr., is based on the beloved holiday film about Buddy, a young orphan who mistakenly crawls into Santa's bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. The would-be elf is raised, unaware that he is a human, until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. This musical comedy is all about remembering & upholding the true meaning of Christmas. Date: Thursday, December 8th Time: depart Forest Green at 12:30pm and show starts at 1:00pm Venue: Horizon Stage at Spruce Grove Composite High School Winter is Coming Please note students will be able to enter the building early (approximately 8:30 am) in the mornings and indoor recesses will be called if the temperature is –20o or below with the wind chill. If it is warmer than that, students will be expected be outside in order to get some exercise and enjoy some much needed play time. Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. Also, Transportation is now using a callout system when busses are delayed by more than 10 minutes. It is important to know that the phone number used for that callout is the one you supplied when registering your children for transportation. Please keep your number up to date! For more information visit the Transportation website at: http://www.psd70.ab.ca/Transportation.php. http://forestgreen.psd70.ab.ca/ Page 4 Christmas Concert Details Our Grades 2-6 Christmas Concerts will take place on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 (for all Group A classes) and Wednesday, December 21, 2016 (for all Group B classes) in the gym. The Parent Council will be holding a bake sale both nights in a continued effort to fundraise for the new playground. Please bring small change if you wish to support this worthy cause. We will also accept any donations for the playground at this time. As in previous years, there will be a raffle for the ‘VIP seating area’ each night. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to ask your child’s classroom teacher or Ms. Jenkins Thank you for your assistance and support. We hope you enjoy this year’s concert! Administering Medication DID YOU KNOW that in order for medication to be administered to your child at school we need a completed “Request for Assistance to Administer Medication” form and that it MUST be signed by a doctor? If you need a copy of the form or have questions please contact Mrs. Buchaski at 780-963-7366. http://forestgreen.psd70.ab.ca/ Page 5 Parent Corner ★Special Recognition★ We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to a local company who recently donated $1000.00 to our Playground Fund. Without generous support like this, our Playground replacement becomes years away. From all of us here, thank you AEGIS WEST ENGINEERING INC. ***Baker’s Needed*** Calling all bakers! We will be hosting a Bake Sale at both evening Christmas Concerts. All proceeds will go towards the new playground, and last year we raised $1200.00! If you are interested in providing baked goods, please email us at [email protected]. We ask all items be wrapped and ready for sale, and it helps to label them too! Some parents make individual goods, others bagged or boxed, some make cakes, the sky's the limit (or at least the school roof!). Please drop off all baked goods on December 20th by 3:00pm, in the kitchen. The sale will run the half hour prior and the half hour after the evening concerts. Small change is appreciated. Christmas Shop The Christmas Shop ticket purchase deadline was December 2. If by some reason you were missed, or have decided you would like to participate, please contact Sharon Chapman immediately at [email protected]. We are looking forward to the children “shopping for Christmas gifts” on the 13th and 14th! Hot Lunch Order Deadline Just a friendly reminder, the deadline for orders and payments for January is December 16, 2016. If paying by cheque, please ensure it is handed in to your homeroom teacher (please do not hand payment into the office, as teachers have specific folders for payment collection). Paypal and cheques are accepted (NO CASH). Please make cheques payable to Forest Green School Parent Council Association. *We are unable to make any exceptions for late orders or payments, and as well any cash sent will be returned. Payments not received by the deadline will result in the order being cancelled. We appreciate your understanding and support.* Next Meeting →Parent Council: J anuar y 17th @ 6:30pm →Fundraising Society: J anuar y 17th @ 5:30pm Connect with Us ✅Facebook: For est Gr een School Par ent Council & Fundr aising Society ✅Email: [email protected] ✅Hotlunch: www.for estgr een.hotlunches.net http://forestgreen.psd70.ab.ca/ Page 6 Lost and Found Are you missing your stuff? Our Lost and Found bin is overflowing! With the Christmas Break drawing near, we anticipate having a lot of parents in the building for concerts and parties. As a result, we will have the items on display from December 9th to the 23rd on two tables in the main hallway (plus more in the bin). After that, items will be donated to Goodwill. Thank you for your support in returning these items home! PSD Parent Learning Opportunities! We at PSD enjoyed learning with our parents and guardians this past year at our monthly Strong Families sessions! We heard from you that you are interested in continuing to learn together, so we have put together a great lineup for this coming year. Come and see amazing speakers and meet with the community partners who offer supports in our communities. Registration will be available by email [email protected] or by calling 780-963-8458. At each evening session, a light supper will be provided and limited childcare will be available. Sessions will be held at the Center for Education (4603 - 48st, Stony Plain) from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. December 6: What were they thinking? All About the Brain Ever wondered, “What were they thinking?” You’re not the only one! Seeing a gap in research, neuroscientists and other researchers are spending more time delving into brain development in children from ECS to Grade 12 and beyond. Remarkably, the brain continues to develop into people’s late 20s, and these recent research findings are giving educators and parents new insight into the “now what?!” Join us for an interactive discussion-based session on current findings, what they mean, and where we go from here. Future Sessions January 10: Coping with Stress February 7: Technology and Our Kids– Keeping them Safe March 14: Preventing Substance Use April 11: Family Conflict and Sibling Rivalry—Make it Stop! However, the amount recycled has levelled off in recent years with at least 35% of Albertans (according to a 2016 poll) not participating in the program even though they have EOL computers or TVs at home that can be recycled. This pilot project is intended to assess the interest of K-12 schools and post-secondary institutions (participants) in holding an electronics roundup at their facilities to raise awareness of electronics recycling. Working with electronics processors (Processors) registered with Alberta Recycling, students and staff could bring in their old computer equipment and TVs and raise money for their school at the same time by receiving grant funding per unit from the electronics recycling program. http://forestgreen.psd70.ab.ca/ Page 9 LITERACY CORNER Grammar (cont.)
