Ethos.
What is it?
The ethos of a school describes its spirit and character.
Why is ethos important?
The ethos of a school impacts strongly on the kind of education delivered to its
pupils. The approach taken to ethical education in Educate Together schools aims to
directly promote the life skills that are essential to a generation of children, growing
up into a diverse and varied social environment. Their adult experience will be
genuinely global in scope.
What’s our Ethos about?
Our Educate Together Ethos is what makes us different to other schools.
We uphold an ethos of respect, diversity & inclusion.
As an Educate Together school, we are committed
to uphold the following principles:
Multi-denominational
i.e. all children having equal rights of access to the school, and children of all social,
cultural and religious backgrounds being equally respected. The schools have
developed education programmes that open the eyes of children to the naturally
positive contribution that social, religious and cultural diversity and difference of
viewpoint and opinion make to society.
Co-educational
to ensure that all children are empowered to fulfil their potential irrespective of
gender. Co-educational education is far more than simply putting girls and boys
into the same classroom and teaching them the same curriculum. Instead it should
ensure that the school develops a comprehensive programme to counter gender
stereotyping in all its forms.
Child centred
each child‘s ability, needs, pace of learning and individuality are recognised
and respected. Each is encouraged and supported to develop to their maximum
potential. Children’s voices and participation in school governance should be
encouraged
Democratically run
This maximises the potential for building a genuine partnership between the
professional, objective role of the teacher and the necessarily personal involvement
of the parent in their children’s education. We also promote student participation
through student councils.
An Ethos Forum?
Reflecting the ‘democratically run’ strand of our Educate Together principles the
Ethos Forum includes representatives from all sections of the school community parents, and staff, including non-teaching staff.
The ethos forum’s first mandate is to engage and communicate with the school
community and promote the school ethos. We hope to further support and
strengthen the lived ethos in our school community.
Over the year, we are planning events and campaigns in suppport of this, are
considering an Ethos week culminating in the One Day Together Event, and a multischool forum/event to share best practice and ideas. We will also be building the
ethos section on our website with resources. Please let us know if you have ideas or
would be more interested in our work or getting involved.
