February 2015
Dear Parents,
Our school is in the midst of much activity at the moment as we enter the spring season of testing as well as
planning for the next school year.
All Baird students were recently tested using the DRP – Degrees of Reading Power – assessment. This assessment
gives us data on students’ reading ability. Teachers are able to chart student progress throughout the year and
differentiate their instruction to meet individual student needs. Results of the test will be available very soon. We
want every child at Baird to develop a love of reading!
8th grade Students from Baird have been selected to represent hundreds of thousands of students across our country
by participating in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) 2015 assessment. This assessment
monitors what U.S. students know and can do in key subject areas. Since 1969, NAEP has provided U.S. educators
and the public with reliable data on student achievement.
Fresno Unified is in its second year of implementation of the Smarter Balanced Assessment. The assessment will take
place beginning the week of April 28ththrough May 19th, 2015. A testing schedule will be available soon. This test
measures critical thinking with questions that ask students to demonstrate their research, writing and problem
solving skills. Assessments are untimed and students can take breaks so that they can do their best.
The School Climate and Culture survey administration will be on February 11th for students. Parent surveys will be
sent home with students on the same day. Gaining feedback through the Parent and Student Surveys is incredibly
valuable. The feedback helps guide decision-making, and planning for continuous improvement efforts, not only at
the site level, but at the district level. We appreciate your taking the time to inform us how we may better
serve you and your child.
Our new website is about to go LIVE! We have been working on this for months in order to better
communicate with you about all things Baird. Check in at www.fresnou.org/schools/baird in the next
few weeks!
Baird’s Bullying Prevention meetings begin again on February 17th. The OLWEUS Bullying Prevention Program is
designed to improve peer relations and make school a safer, more positive place for students to learn and develop.
Students make connections with adults and also learn skills on how to address bullying and receive support when
they are bullied. Classes are ongoing throughout the year.
A new workshop series for parents begins on February 4th. This interactive series will emphasize career opportunities
in Science, Engineering, Technology and Math. Please make every effort to attend!
Our annual Sweetheart Run is just around the corner on Friday, February 13th. Students have 20 minutes to walk or
jog as many laps as possible around the school field. Students collect “flat” pledges of any amount to help raise
money for Baird student activities sponsored by the PTA to help fund Hip Hop, Guitar Club, and other sponsored PTA
events. Pledge money is due no later than Wednesday, February 4th. There are lots of great incentives for the kids
so please turn in those pledges. This is an exciting and fun event for all! We hope to see you there!
Calling all Dads!!! Dad’s Day will be held on Thursday, March 5th from 8-10 am. Come enjoy a nice morning of
donuts, coffee and juice with your kids as you listen to our wonderful guest speaker for the event. Afterwards take a
memorable photo with your child and then head to class to enjoy some time with your child in their classroom
environment. We love to see our Baird Dads here on campus so we invite you all to come and attend this wonderful
event. All flyers for our events can be found on Baird’s website under Baird Parent Center.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Martínez

Febrero 2015
Venga a
Center.

Thinking about and planning for college can often times be an incredibly stressful activity. However, one
of the easiest ways to make this process less stressful is to start early!
Starting to plan for college in middle school and ideally in elementary school is a great way to not only
prepare students, but parents as well. The amount of information regarding financial aid, A-G
requirements, AP and IB courses, is often incredibly overwhelming for parents and students alike.
In an attempt to clarify this process and educate parents and students on these subjects, Fresno
Unified School District is offering COLLEGE: Making It Happen workshops to all middle
school students. These events will cover some of the topics listed above and will offer some clarity
around areas of confusion for parents. The initial workshop at the High School will give a great overview
of information regarding college, financial aid, and transition to high school.
Parents and guardians, on behalf of Fresno Unified School District and California State University, Fresno
(Baird Middle Middle School) will be co-hosting “COLLEGE MAKING IT HAPPEN in (the cafeteria) on
(Tuesday, February 24, 2015) from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Did you know that your child can start taking college
level courses in middle school? THAT’S RIGHT! This is a perfect opportunity for parents and students to
start learning the basic steps to a successful transition to high school and into college. This is a FREE and
informative event. Refreshments will be available!
Please mark your calendar, Tuesday, February 24th at 6:00PM. Fliers will come home soon. We
look forward to your attendance! Thank you!
Este evento is
gratituo.
Refrescos disponibles! Marque su calendario, martes 24 de febrero a las 6:00 PM. Su estudiante pronto

5th Grade
Mrs. Harper - “What’s the matter?” Why yes, EVERYTHING is the matter! Students in Mrs. Harper’s
science class are learning about matter—atoms, molecules, elements, the periodic table, etc. It is a
fascinating look at what The Universe is made up of. In the next few weeks, students will be assigned a
specific element to research. They will complete a small project about their element with the help of Mrs.
Harper and Mrs. Johnson in the LMC. It is a rewarding project and students will become Element Experts!
Pass the NaCl, please!
Mr. Luna - We're having a great start to the second half of the year in Social Science and PE. In Social
Science, we have finished our unit on Native Americans and have begun to learn about the changes in
Europe that led to exploration colonization. In PE, we will continue to practice running the mile and will
soon begin practicing for our state mandated PE Testing. We are excited about the second half of the
year and look forward to a fun and productive finish.
Mrs. Alvarado - The time is flying by way too fast! Thank you for sharing your wonderful students with
us! This quarter we will be focusing on essay and summary writing, learning how to find the themes in
the literature we read, and begin reading the classic story of ʺIsland of the Blue Dolphins.ʺ As always, if
your child needs any extra help, I am in my room before school each morning.
Mr. Karian - Students are continuing to show great improvement and mastery in math facts which is
more important than ever as head into the second semester. Students who need extra help with math
concepts and homework may come in for extra tutoring from me every morning during AST from 8:459:10 AM.
6th Grade
Please turn in camp paperwork as soon as possible :)
Math: Geometry
Social Science: We are now in India learning about monsoons, the Varnas, the Caste System,
Brahmanism and Hinduism and Gandhi!
Science: We are beginning to discuss Earthquakes and Volcanoes!!
ELA/Journalism: STUDY OF CIVIL RIGHTS-focusing on nonviolent methods of Mahatma Gandhi, Martin
Luther King Jr., and Cesar Chavez
Reading/Communications: We are reading a novel and studying how to identify the theme.
7th Grade
Cross-Curricular Unit: ʺWhat it takes to be Greatʺ was implemented in the seventh grade. Science, Math and PE
discussed figures in history and in the present who are great individuals. All of our seventh grade students saw two
documentary films about students who achieved excellence: Mad Hot Ballroom is about competitive ballroom dancing
and Spellbound is about students who make it to the national spelling bee. Students used graphic organizers to
compare and contrast those who achieved superior marks to the other contestants in the films and discussed what
key characteristics helped each young person succeed. Individually our students set goals for themselves and
conferenced with their teachers about some key things they could do to achieve their personal goals. Speeches were
written in ELA and delivered in History.
Museum of Tolerance: ELA has begun reading the novel The Book Thief and will be reading and analyzing this
throughout the third quarter. Feb. 5th we have a guest speaker to speak about the Armenian Genocide and on Feb
6th the entire 7th grade class will be taking a Field Trip to the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles.
8th Grade
Field Trip to the Tech Museum: On Friday February 20th, all 8th graders have the opportunity to attend
a study trip to the fabulous Technology Museum in San Jose. We will be touring the Tech Museum,
viewing an IMAX movie, and participating in 2 hands on science labs. Cost for the trip is $25.00 and
includes the transportation on a charter bus and all activities at the museum. We will need to take
several parent chaperons to help supervise students. Chaperon requirements include leading a small
group of Baird students through the exhibits and making sure the group arrives at the various
activities on time. The cost for a chaperon is $15. Chaperons will be chosen by lottery. If you would like
to sign up to be a chaperon, please email Frau Grünberg with your name, child’s name and a contact
phone number at [email protected]. An informational letter and the student
permission slip will be sent home later this month. We hope that all 8th graders will be able to attend
this fun and educational trip.
English Language Arts: At the end of Quarter 2, some students in ELA finished up our 3rd novel of the year, Parrot in
the Oven. Other students considered what success looks like in their own lives. All students presented their ideas to
the class. Just a reminder, all students should be reading 30 minutes a night and asking for a parent signature on the
pink reading log. If your child does not like a book s/he is reading, they are welcome to choose another one. Nothing
kills the love of reading like being forced to finish a book you don’t like. A good guideline is to read the first 20-25
pages and then decide if the book is worth finishing.
History: Students have been learning about the birth of political parties in the United States. Our next
DBQ (Document Based Question) will trace Lewis and Clark’s exploration with the Corps of Discovery.
Math: Learning objectives to be covered are creating scatter plots, interpreting scatter plots, creating
equations for sequences, and factoring quadratic equations.
PE: During the month of December, 8th Grade P.E. students are learning the game of lacrosse. For most students,
this is their first exposure to the sport. There are some young ladies who are already interested in playing lacrosse
for their high schools. Baird is always well represented across Fresno Unified high schools when it comes to varsity
lacrosse.
Science: In science the students have completed their Atom in a Box project. They selected their element and
researched it. The small 3-D atom models were built at home out of everyday household materials. We are now
learning about chemical reactions.
REMINDER: In order to participate in the end-of-the-year activities (including our promotion celebration on June
11th), students must dress appropriately, have good citizenship (i.e. no “n” or “u” in any class), maintain a
cumulative GPA of at least 2.0, and have no suspensions within 14 days of any event. Parents of students not
meeting these requirements will be notified.
Music Department
Happy New Year! The music department has no programs or concerts scheduled in February at this time.
Two of our Baird students auditioned and were selected to be a part of the Fresno Madera Counties
Honor Orchestra in December. The concert was held Saturday, January 17th at the Shaghoian
Auditorium. Fifth grader, Elsa Macias played violin in the elementary orchestra and Jacob Rulison, 8th
grade, played the clarinet in the intermediate orchestra. Both groups were excellent! Well done, Elsa and
Jacob!
In commemoration of the Dr Martin Luther King holiday, the students in Ms Tilghman's classes have been
listening to and discussing music of the Civil Rights movement and how that music from ʺWe Shall
Overcomeʺ to John Coltrane's Alabama influenced and directed the movement. Our discussions have
been lively and interesting and students had a chance to hear and see video clips of music that they
might not have heard otherwise. The curriculum is from Rock and Roll Forever, a history of Rock and
Roll.
The beginning band and the chorus are working hard and progressing nicely.

Help Us Purchase a Cart for our New Tablets! In November, Baird received 24 new tablets. This will allow
the creation of a 4th set of tablets for teachers to check out from the library and use in their classrooms.
The only problem is that there is no cart for the new tablets. To help overcome this problem, Mrs.
Johnson has submitted a request on DonorsChoose.org to get one.
DonorsChoose.com is a crowd sourcing website for teachers and schools, where teachers make requests
for items and donors choose what projects they want to support and how much money they want to
donate. The total cost for the tablet cart is $859.00. If you would like to donate towards a new cart for
Baird, please go to donorschoose.org. On the “Projects” page in the keyword search type “Home and
Transportation Wanted.” Our project should come up! Once there click “Donate.” You may donate any
amount you wish, from $1 to the entire amount. Even little donations add up. With your help, we will
soon have a cart to get our new tablets out to students in the classroom!
If you would like to find out more about Donors Choose go to http://www.donorschoose.org/about
Ag
Agriculture is “growing”. 8th graders have begun a gardening in container project. They have planted
lettuce seedlings into their personal growing containers that were sprouted from seeds they planted prior
to the winter break. 7th graders, who study Agricultural Botany, just completed a Paper White Narcissus
repotting project (see photos). 5th graders are discovering how California rice farmers lead the nation in
wetland wildlife cooperation while producing rice. They also have planted snap peas in to containers and
are going to record their growth and germination.
German
This month I am again welcoming new students for the quarter. We will be covering the follow topics in
January:
5th Grade: alphabet, numbers, colors, introducing themselves and others.
6th & 7th grade: Talking about interests and expressing likes & dislikes.
The high school credit 8th grade class will be learning how to express wishes while shopping, comment
on and describe clothes, give compliments and respond to compliments.
As always, please have your child see me during AST for absent work or extra help.
Danke schön,
Frau Grünberg
AVID
AVID’s Mission… is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and
success in a global society.
BAIRD MIDDLE SCHOOL RECEIVES NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE
Fresno, California- Baird Middle School has been selected as an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)
National Demonstration School, a kindergarten through postsecondary system that has turned thousands of students
into confident, college-going scholars and graduates.
The school, which joins approximately 140 other AVID National Demonstration Schools, was selected through an
application process, screening and review that included a site visit. AVID is implemented in more than 4,900 schools
in 45 states, the District of Columbia, and 16 countries/territories and impacts more than 700,000 students in grades
K-12 and 41 postsecondary institutions.
AVID Chief Executive Officer Sandy Husk notes the significance of attaining demonstration site status. “Schools
chosen as demonstration sites have proven their ability to successfully implement the AVID academic elective course
and take the strategies schoolwide to impact all students,” says Husk. “Baird Middle School was selected as an AVID
National Demonstration School because it has implemented the AVID system throughout the school and can serve as
a model for new AVID sites.”
The recognition of being an AVID National Demonstration School was established in 1993 with a $250,000 award
from the Charles A. Dana Foundation of New York. As part of the AVID Demonstration Site Network, sites are
expected to develop a model program with schoolwide participation. With AVID’s proven methodologies used
throughout subject area classes, performance levels improve for all students, but especially for those students who
are the least likely to attend four-year colleges. Schools from around the world that are preparing to implement the
AVID system will visit Demonstration Schools, such as this one, to observe a highly evolved AVID system.
Valerie Martinez, Baird Middle School’s principal, is pleased that the school was chosen as an AVID National
Demonstration School for the second time, noting the impact of the program on staff and students.
“It is a tremendous honor to be selected as a continuing Demo, and we are proud of our AVID program and our
school as a whole,” said Valerie Martinez. “The use of AVID strategies schoolwide has positively impacted students
and staff, and we continue to see a more engaged and college-ready student body.”
