Exploring Weight: One Pound
You will need: a scale, gallon sized plastic bag, dried beans
1.
In your group, work to fill the plastic with the amount of beans that you
predict weigh 1 pound. DO NOT USE THE SCALE.
2.
Now, use the scale to weigh the bag. Is it more than, less than or equal
to 1 pound? Record your results in a table like the one below.
3.
Add/Remove beans from your bag until it weighs 1 pound.
4.
Using the bag of beans as a benchmark, estimate the weight of objects
in the classroom. Find:
• two objects heavier than 1 pound
• two objects lighter than 1 pound
• two objects equal to1 pound
5.
Sketch and label each of your objects. Record your findings in your
journal. Create a table with the columns below:
lighter than1 pound
equal to 1 pound
heavier than 1 pound
