Some of the key services and programs Deaf Services Queensland
provides are:

 Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Interpreting
 Auslan Translations
 Employment Support Services

are greatly appreciated and go toward continually increasing our
capacity to provide these important services to the Deaf and hearing
impaired communities of Queensland

Family & Child
Connect
Family Inclusion
Network Qld
Townsville
Family & Child Connect is a community based intake and referral
service that helps at-risk and vulnerable families connect with the
services they need to safely care for their children at home. The
service helps families to receive the help they need before their
problems escalate, requiring Child Safety to intervene.
When a referral is made to Family & Child Connect an initial
assessment of the concern is undertaken and a range of responses
are considered. Responses include:
Information & Advice: Information & advice are provided to the
referrer as to how they can respond. This may include advice on
how to keep the family engaged and information on local support
services that may be able to help.
Referral to a support service: Assist the referrer to refer the family
to a support service. The service may assist the referrer to gain the
families consent to the referral, and facilitate engagement between
the referrer and the support service to ensure a smooth process.
Active engagement & Referral to Intensive Family Support
services: Where families have multiple or complex needs, Family &
Child Connect engages them in a more detailed needs assessment
and seeks their consent to be referred to an Intensive family
Support service.
Anyone can contact Family & Child Connect for general advice and
information, including parents, family members, young people and
other community members and services.

What is the Collective Impact Project? This is an action research
project which works through selected Communities for Children
sites and is based on the idea of ‘collective impact’. The idea behind
collective impact is that we have to find better ways to work together
– COLLECTIVELY – and in genuine collaboration if we are ever to
solve complex social issues (like poverty, homelessness, or child
welfare). This is because complex problems are caused by multiple
causal factors interacting with each other in complicated ways.
What we need to see is the impact of lots of people working
together collectively: community organisations, government
agencies, schools, local businesses, local leaders and community
members. The partners in this project come from a range of
government, non-government and university organisations: they
have made a commitment to work together to support communities

to achieve better outcomes for children and families. The overall
aim of this project is to improve the functioning of the child serving
system in local communities by promoting strong collaborations who
work together to solve complex problems.
What does a Collective Impact Facilitator do?
It takes a lot for organisations to work together: it doesn’t just
happen by itself. There are a lot of reasons for this: it can be really
time-consuming and challenging to develop a strong and genuine
collaboration between disparate partners; organisations sometimes
work at cross-purposes; community service organisations are used
to having to compete for funding; and it is really hard to implement
shared systems for measuring collective impact. Research around
the world on collective impact projects suggests that dedicated
resources (collective impact facilitators) are needed to support
collaborative efforts, to help everyone work together and try to
overcome the barriers that often thwart people’s attempts to work
this way.

group of new friends that meet and share and take part in activities

ABOUT US
The human and community services sector is a dynamic and
complex environment. Non-government organisations are
increasingly pressured to do more with less. Being able to buy in
expertise allows you to take full advantage of service development
opportunities. PPE can work with your organisation to develop a
strategic direction and break it down into operational reality. With
everyone so time poor working to deliver quality services the
strategic direction of the organisation as a whole can sometimes
take a back seat. Good planning and strategic development
however are the keys to sustainability and overall organisational
wellbeing.
OUR VALUES
PPE has a strong social justice values base. Laree Verra, Principal
Consultant has a vision for PPE that is based on supporting
organisations that empower the most vulnerable members of the
community. Our ethos is to look after your organisation so that you
have the time and energy to focus on what really matters...looking
after your clients. All PPE interventions are client focused; evidence
based and have a strong values base.

skilled response operators that will respond to your call quickly after
being alerted and arranges emergency assistance; therefore
ensuring clients get the help needed as soon as possible. As many

Learning for Life
Our Learning for Life program provides emotional, practical and
financial support to help disadvantaged children and young people
with their education. Our support starts in the early years of learning
development and continues through primary and high school. Our
programs help build skills, knowledge, motivation, self-belief and a
network of positive relationships with parents, peers and significant
others. This support increases a young person’s likelihood of
remaining engaged with school, completing Year 12 and developing
realistic and informed study and career pathways for life beyond the
school gate.

Let’s Read
Let's Read promotes reading with children aged 0-5 years. Sharing
books with a young child helps build the skills needed for starting
school. In Townsville, The Smith Family partners with Townsville
City Council to deliver Let's Read. There are three parts to Let's
Read:
1. Community based professionals are trained to work with
individual parents/ caregivers to promote the messages about
the importance of reading with young children & give practice
advice about "things to do". Families receive a free book pack
from this community based professional.
2. Volunteers promote reading aloud & the development of early
literacy in young children by offering "read aloud" sessions in
the community.
3. Events promoting early literacy

variable group of community programs- depending on funding.;
including small group education programs, outreach to schools,
collaborative events such as Living in Harmony, Refugee Week,
Human Rights Day. Advocacy on individual level and connection to
migrant agents, contribution to research and policy advocacy with
Peak Bodies and convenes a quarterly Local Area Coordination
meeting to promote settlement needs locally. Collaboration and
partnerships with services is critical to facilitate settlement outcomes
and is a large component of every program at TMSG. Increasingly,
TMSG is looking at partnership deliveries and the recent
membership of a consortium with SOLAS for delivery of a
community mental health program is one such partnership.
