Peerpressurecanhappenatanytimeinyourlife,butismostlikelytohappenduringadolescence.
Whydoesthishappen?1
Yourfriendsandpeerscanhavealargeinfluenceinyourlife,especiallyattimewhenyouarebecoming
moreindependent.Duringadolescence,youcanendupspendingmoretimewithyourfriendsthanwith
yourfamily!Thedecisionsandinterestsofyourpeerscanlargelyinfluenceyourdecisionsandinterests
inapositiveorinanegativeway.
Peerinfluencescanincludethewaytheydress,thethingstheydoontheirtimeoff,andtheattitudes
theyshow.Peopleareinfluencedbypeersbecausetheywanttofitin,andtheymaywanttobelike
peerstheyadmire,dowhatothersaredoing,orhavewhatothershave.

Negative:Oftencanleadtodangerorill-healthandwillgoagainstsocietyrules,schoolrules,or

PROCEDURE
1. Afterreviewingthegroundrules,writethewordsPEERPRESSUREontheboard.Askyouthwhat
theythinkthismeans.
2. Engageinadiscussionexplainingwhatpeerpressureisandwhyithappens.Provideexamples
(seeexplanations/examplesabove).Makesurethateverybodygetsachancetospeak
3. WritePOSITIVEandNEGATIVEontheboardandtalkaboutthedifferentkindsofpeerpressure
andthendiscusshowtodealwithit.
4. Aftergivingtheparticipantsexamplesofeachkindofpressure,bringoutthepeerpressuredice
(seehowtomakethediceonthefollowingpage)andaskthemtogetintogroupsof2-4people.
