Funny Christmas Poem
Toy Escape
Late Christmas Eve, when all was still,
And the room was dark as night,
The Christmas tree lit magically;
It was a fantastic sight!
Then from around the tree trunk came,
A strange and funny sound,
As gifts began to unwrap themselves,
And toys jumped out all around.
The music box began to play,
And in a crazy trance,
The candy canes jumped off the tree
To do a silly dance.
The big stuffed bear leaped to his feet,
To see what he could see;
He rode a shiny, bright red bike
Around the Christmas tree.
The new toy kitchen started to cook,
And before you could blink an eye,
The oven door opened, and from inside
Came a tiny pizza pie.
A squirt gun squirted everything;
It knew what it was for;
By the time that it was emptied out,
A big puddle lay on the floor.
A beautiful doll with golden hair
Was searching for a friend;
A toy soldier marched up and took her hand;
They were a perfect blend.
In the bedroom were a boy and girl,
Asleep in Christmas dreams;
The soldier saluted; the doll gave a kiss;
At least that's the way it seems.
Now everything began to tire;
The toys went back in place;
But when mother woke in the morning,
You should have seen her face.
The tree was fine; the gifts were there,
Yet mother gave a roar;
She looked at her wet shoes and yelled,
"What's this puddle on my floor?"

Christmas Boxes
Family Game
Instructions:
Boxes (also known as Dots and Dots and Boxes) is a well-loved classic strategy game with enough of a
challenge to keep older kids and adults amused, but easy enough for younger children to enjoy (and
learn from) too. It is a game for two players.
How to play:
Print out the grid.
You will need a pencil or pen each. Choose which player is to go first. He/she joins 2 adjacent dots with
a straight line. The next player then also joins up 2 adjacent lines.
Play continues with the players taking turns until someone completes a box. He/she then claims the box
as their own by writing their initials in it, and gets one more go. Every time a box is completed, the
player who completes it gets another turn, so sometimes a player will manage to complete quite a number of boxes in a row before their turn is over!
Continue play until all boxes are complete. The player with the most boxes wins.

Rosie Potter’s
Swim Challenge
Thank you Rosie
I decided that I needed a challenge/target to aim for in 2012. Just before Christmas 2011, I
was reading the paper and there was an article about the British Gas Great North Swim in
Windermere on 23rd June 2012. I decided that was my goal for 2012 (probably after a few
too many glasses of wine, but it seemed like a good idea at the time). I paid my entry fee
and set about training. I had never done any serious open water swimming before although
I have always been a keen swimmer. I decided to raise money for Headway North Cumbria
and Maryport Inshore Rescue (my brother is one of their crew). Laurence very generously
bought me a wetsuit and I did my first open water swim in Talkin Tarn on 12th May - it was
cold! I enjoyed it and arranged another couple of swims including a 500m swim in Derwentwater the week before the Great North Swim was due to take place. Then disaster struck,
the weather was so bad that the Great North Swim was cancelled. I then entered the Great
Scottish Swim and carried on training for this (I included the Morecambe Bay Mile in my
training schedule). Unfortunately the Great Scottish Swim was cancelled due to concerns
over water quality. The season was coming to a close, so I had to find another swim fast. I
got a place on the Mediacity UK swim challenge at Salford Quays on 1st September. This
time all went well and it was a lovely day, the water was a very pleasant 16 degrees and the
sun was shining. I completed the swim in 56 minutes. I really enjoyed the swim and I am
already planning more swims for next year. My aim is to complete a 3.8km ironman swim
soon. I would like to thank Laurence for his unfailing support and good humour at being
dragged around to my various swim sessions (I think he enjoys the bacon butties beforehand and the cakes and coffee afterwards more than the actual swimming). I would also like
to thank everyone who sponsored me and helped me raise £406 and my employers UK Mail
who matched my efforts and brought the total amount to £812. - Rosie Potter
Rosie - Thank you so much for all your hard work entering the
above. It is very much appreciated.

Christmas Recipe Idea!
Turkey Pot Pies
Ingredients:
For the filling
1 tbsp vegetable oil
100g/3½oz smoked bacon lardons
1 onion, sliced
1 garlic clove, crushed
2 carrots, chopped
200g/7oz roast turkey, shredded
100g/3½oz cooked prawns, peeled
1 red chilli, chopped
1 tbsp tomato purée
200ml/7fl oz red wine
100ml/3½oz chicken stock
1 free range egg, beaten for egg wash
250g/10oz shortcrust pastry
Preparation method:
1.
Heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Fry the bacon lardons until crisp. Remove the lardons using a slotted spoon and set aside.
2.
In same pan, fry the onions and garlic for 5-6 minutes, or until golden-brown and softened.
3.
Add the remaining ingredients, except the egg and pastry. Bring the mixture to the boil
and simmer for 25 minutes. Set aside to cool.
4.
Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 5.
5.
Divide the mixture between four individual pie dishes. Cut the pastry into four pieces,
each big enough to cover the pie dish. Brush the edge of each dish with egg wash and
cover with the pastry. Trim any excess pastry and brush the lid with the remaining egg
wash.
6.
Cook for 20-25 minutes until the lid is crisp and golden-brown.
This pie is a delicious recipe for leftover roast turkey. Serve with mash or bubble and squeak.
