Keyboarding Notes
3 Parts of the Keyboard
1. alphanumeric
2. function keys
3. numeric keypad - (calculator,
or 10-key)
Alphanumeric Keys
typing keys - (A-Z), work just like a
typewriter, we use the most common
keyboard called QWERTY
spacebar - adds a blank space
between characters
shift - used to type uppercase letters
or the symbols on the top of the
number keys

backspace - moves the cursor one
space to the left and erases
enter - used to enter commands or
begin a new line or paragraph
tab - tab moves the cursor 5 spaces to
the right, used to indent a paragraph

caps lock - type uppercase letters
without holding Shift, Caps Lock Light
will indicate when it is ON
Number/symbol keys - pressed alone
produces number, pressed with Shift
produces the symbol
Computer Keys
Esc - Escape key, used to exit the
current activity
Ctrl - Control key, used with
another key to modify the function
of that key
Alt - Alt key, See Ctrl key definition
Computer Keys (cont’d)
Print Screen - prints a “hard copy”
of what is on your display screen
Scroll Lock - scrolls the text
Pause - suspends the activity of
the computer, used with computer
games
Dedicated Cursor Keys
cursor - the blinking I, indicates where the next
character or space will be
Home Key - moves the cursor to the beginning of
the line or top of the page
Ctrl + Home = to the beginning of the text on
the first page
End Key - moves the cursor to the end of the line or
bottom of the page
Ctrl + End = to the end of the text on the last
page
More Cursor Keys
Page Up - moves to the previous
page
Page Down - moves to the next
page
Insert - insert information
without losing original place
Delete - erases information at
the cursor’s position, to the right
One More Cursor Key
Arrow Keys - up, down,
left, & right; moves the
cursor in the matching
direction.
Function Keys
F1-F12=what they do
depends on the software.
F1 = Help!
Numeric Keypad
Works like a calculator.
Num Lock – the light
indicates when the
numeric keypad is “ON”.
