ANNUAL REPORT providing hope and recovery 2014 FROM THE CEO YEAR IN REVIEW Hello dear friends: Another year has passed and while there has been no end of challenges to keep us on our toes, this year has been kinder to Bridgehaven. Thanks to you we are weathering the storm of the continuing changes in the behavioral health care delivery system. While the clouds are not gone, we do see peeks of sunshine and we are stronger. You, our loyal donors and supporters have helped make it possible for us to continue providing the recovery services that produce growth and enhance the lives of our members. In response to the needs of our members and changing expectations of payer sources we have worked hard to revise, refine and retool the services offered by Bridgehaven. They are more recovery focused and place more emphasis on integrating our members into the fabric of our community. These efforts have been led by the Director of Program Operations, Stewart Bridgman, who was promoted to this restructured position in November, 2013. He has brought fresh ideas and new energy to the clinical staff and our program and has become a valuable member of our Senior Leadership Team. Improved financial stability allowed him to replace clinical positions that had to be left unfilled last year. New program staff has contributed to an increased focus on member wellness and empowerment. We have continued to add to our strong group of Peer Support Specialists and they are leading the planning for a new consumer run program to open in January 2015. Our clinical outcomes remain strong with 93% of members achieving their recovery and community integration goals; hospitalizations for psychiatric treatment reduced by 90%; 71% of members reporting a positive quality of life and a 93% member satisfaction rate with the services they receive. Four groups of members have now graduated from the Cognitive Enhancement Therapy Program with outstanding results. Participants demonstrate improved focus and concentration, tremendous improvement in the ability to interact with others in social situations and greatly enhanced self-confidence. For some individuals this means they can read again, a skill and a passion that was lost at the onset of their illness. For others it means they have increased comfort levels around others and they can now work again. I am always thrilled and proud when I encounter them in the community and on the job! For others it means a return to school to finish degrees that were abandoned when mental illness derailed their life plans. We are learning that the effects of CET last long after the program is completed and improvement continues to occur. It is the key to continued recovery! Efforts to improve Bridgehaven’s financial position and increase the array of services we offer have not been confined to within the agency. Bridgehaven was actively involved throughout this fiscal year with the DBHDID and other non-profit mental health recovery providers in the process of creating Administrative Regulations for licensure of a new behavioral health provider entity. Named the Behavioral Health Services Organization, Bridgehaven was actively involved throughout this fiscal year with the DBHDID and other non-profit mental health recovery providers. Because of Bridgehaven’s leadership in mental health recovery, we were asked by the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities (DBHDID) to consult with Central State Hospital to develop a Recovery Center within the hospital. The consultation project was led by the Director of Program Operations with assistance from other Bridgehaven staff with expertise in particular areas. The new Recovery Center will open in August, 2014 in a bright and inviting space with a broad array of recovery focused groups and activities in which hospital patients will participate. Leaving the traditional inpatient unit and choosing services in a different environment is expected to better prepare hospital patients for discharge to community based services such as those provided by Bridgehaven and to reduce frequent rehospitalizations. Our relationship with you, our donors and supporters, is strong. To enhance those relationships and expand our Development efforts, we engaged the expertise of Ashley, Rountree and Associates to analyze our development program, recommend approaches to strengthen donor relationships and add new development activities to improve our results. Implementation of their recommendations began in January and will continue into the next fiscal year. We are already seeing encouraging results! or BHSO, this new provider category will allow organizations like Bridgehaven to contract directly with the Managed Care Organizations that authorize and reimburse for Medicaid mental health services. This represents an historic change for the Commonwealth, as reimbursement for Medicaid mental health services has been available only to the Regional Community Mental Health Centers established by law in 1963. Coupled with the expansion of behavioral health and substance abuse services that will be covered by Medicaid, achieving this licensure will afford Bridgehaven and other provider organizations the opportunity to become independent providers and to expand the array of services we provide. The regulations are expected to be completed and released in July, 2014. So, after a busy year, expect to read about even more changes when you receive this report next year. Watch for new services and programs that will offer mental health consumers more choice, greater community integration, better coordination of care and enhanced opportunity for recovery and empowerment! You are our strength and our inspiration. Thank you for your support and your belief in Bridgehaven’s mission and for being part of our journey. Ramona Johnson APRN, CS President and CEO MEMBER STORY ELLEN My name is Ellen. My story begins in the 1960s in Plano, TX. A Norman Rockwell life to those looking in. Upper middle class neighborhood, two brothers, a sister, caring and educated parents. School life was busy. I was heavily involved in activities as well. It was a Leave It To Beaver existence. But when I went through puberty, things started to change for me during my high school years. Voices slowly and powerfully started to take over my mind and my existence. Theater became my activity of choice….giving the “voices” an outlet streets, shelters, hospitals….streets, shelters, hospitals…….over and over and over. In 2003 I had all I could take physically and mentally. It was sink or swim…..and somehow through the chaos in my head, I made the decision to swim and survive! I had been reading the works of Thomas Merton and I just felt that if Louisville, Kentucky was home to this deep and thoughtful man, maybe it could be a healing place for me too, right? I convinced my mother to buy me a bus ticket and I was off to the unknown in Kentucky. THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU to pretend….it seemed to help. But not enough to completely mask my odd and paranoid behaviors that had begun. To say the least, my new mental health issues caused my family alarm and lead to trouble, upset, doctors, medications that didn’t work and the beginnings of massive amounts of hospitalizations as I tried to begin my college experience. My acting out lead to a very poor decision to get married at very young age. This was a time when I couldn’t take care of myself much less be in a relationship. He whisked me off to Las Vegas to begin our lives together. In a short amount of time, my husband could not deal with the path and the severity that my mental health was on and he divorced me. The divorce left me homeless and without resources, medication or support. When I wasn’t living on the streets of Las Vegas for the next seven years, I was hospitalized 33 times! It was a revolving door all of those many years…….. The day I arrived I was seeking help and found the system and connections of social service agencies here were amazing compared to what I had come from. Within the two years, I had received the right medications for the first time in my life, disability so I could maintain housing, and a social worker that helped me transition each time I left the hospital. In 2005 they suggested I should go to Bridgehaven and just give it a try….what would that hurt? So I did just that! IMMEDIATELY upon arriving at Bridgehaven I felt acceptance, understanding, that I was liked, friendships, and a sense of belonging for the first time since I was a little girl. I finally had the key to my mind and my heart. Over the past 9 years I have only gone in the hospital twice for very, very short stays. THAT is a miracle in itself compared to the rest of my previous adult life. On top of all this, Bridgehaven began offering the CET program a few years ago. This has been the cherry on top to turning my life completely I finally had the key to my mind and heart. around and reconnecting with my family in Texas….in fact they just came here last week to celebrate my 50th birthday with me. (An age I don’t think any of them thought I would ever reach!) My heart was so full celebrating such a milestone surrounded by my family again. I just can’t explain to you how great that made me feel. With Bridgehaven and CET I really do feel I was handed the key to not only my mind, but to the beginning of my life! I’m discovering new things about myself each and every day... as a student, an artist, a friend, a daughter and a sister. It is beyond words to describe how WONDERFUL it is to have that lock opened! I just want to thank Bridgehaven. To shout from the rooftops how grateful I am for what they have done or me. Sincere thanks from the bottom of my heart.
