attend practice sessions and play in the
matches.
Very well done to Roddy Gaynors Jimmy
Bruen Team, who defeated Carrick GC on
Monday evening. They now go on to play
Ballina GC in 2 weeks time.
We wish the best of luck to Robbie Fitzpatrick
& Alice Flanagan with the Mixed Foursomes
Team who take on Castle Dargan GC on
Wednesday evening(27/05). All support most
welcome
SOCIAL MIXED FOURSOMES
The Social Mixed got underway last Friday on a cool breezy evening. It was a slow
start with only eight couples turning out. Every indication is that participation will pick
up as there were a number of competing events in Sligo that same evening. The
winners with 18 points were our Inter-Club Mixed Foursomes pairing of Frank Gleeson
and Mary Conefrey. In second place with 12 points were Philip and Angela Soden. The
36 handicap prize went to Karol Butler and Lisa Flanagan. The “Pulley Outs” (a golf
ball) were won by Michael & Mary Kennedy; Lady Captain Carmel and Vice Captain
Jeff Hatt, Captain Aidan and Caroline Bradshaw. Please note going forward, Madge
Smyth will collect Mixed entry fees in the restaurant area adjacent to the door near the
first tee Note: There will be no Social Mixed on Friday 29th May as the Cancer Care
Fundraiser is on that day and evening. The next Mixed will be on the following Friday
June 5th , so why not come along, hone your game for the SHOUT fundraiser in
memory of Ronnie and enjoy a social evening.. Madge Smyth & Jeff Hatt

Eamon O'Mahony
Well done to Eamon who had a
great par at the 4th
Master Class by Cronin needs no assessment.
Donal Cronin, current holder of the Jackson Cup(shown here)
won Saturday Singles with a personal best score of level par
resulting in 42 pts. He held off his fellow teacher and playing
partner, a rampant Derek Wynee, and won by the merest of
margins. Donal had a front 9 of 22pts with only 1 bogey on 7
and birdies on 4 and 5. Thanks to a birdie on 13 he was 2
Under playing 17. He went over the dip on 17 and bogeyed it
and was over green on 18 with an 8 iron from 133 metres to
also bogey. He attributes his success in no small part to a new set of irons
purchased recently from Jim Robinson. The investment is
paying off!!! He is now off his lowest ever handicap of 4.8
and is expected to feature again in the coming weeks.
It’s Ford fiesta time as Tom wins the day

The mercurial Tom Ford (pictured here) won Sundays
Singles competition from the in form Peter Maguire
on the Back 9. In fact all four prize winners, on this
very windy but mainly dry day, had the same score and
Back 9’s and Back 6’s were required to separate them.
The winning round began in earnest early Sunday
morning but a temporary lapse of Ford focus on the 3rd
resulted in a lost ball and momentum was lost.
A pit stop was required when a usually Stable Ford
found himself uncharacteristically 5 over par after 9
holes. And so it was on the 10th Tee, a coffee
compliments of Joe Gilroy accompanied by a delicious
scone baked that very morning by Catherine Hanley
from an old SwinFord recipe, was served up. The short
siesta soon ended and a fully fuelled Ford emerged
firing on all 4 cylinders. A birdie barrage followed on
10, 11 and 12 and another was added on the 16th for
good measure making it a very strong back nine.

QUIZ Answer : When Is a Ball Holed?
The definition of 'holed' is; "A ball is holed when it is at rest within the
circumference of the hole and all of it is below the level of the lip of the hole.“.
The correct procedure is that the player, or another person authorised by
them, may move or remove the flagstick, and if the ball falls into the hole, the
player is deemed to have holed out with his last stroke; otherwise, the ball, if
moved, must be placed on the lip of the hole, without penalty. In stroke play,
if a fellow competitor (not authorised) removes the flagstick and the ball
moves away from the hole , there is no penalty to anyone and the ball must
be replaced. In match play, the opponent (not authorised) incurs a penalty
stroke and the ball must be replaced against the flagstick.

Reeling in the Years – 18th -22nd Aug Irish Open 1988
Robbo Cops
a Faldo Flaw
Nicky baby, I think your take away
is a wee bit on the slow side
In 1988 our professional Jim “Robbo” Robinson qualified to play in the Irish Open held at
Portmarnock. It was won by 7 clear shots by Ian Wosnam who also won it the following
year, beating Philip Walton in a playoff. It had a strong field including the reigning US
Open champion Curtis Strange. Jim unfortunately didn’t make the cut and was amongst
some well known golfers in that regard. Most noticeable was defending Champion
Berhard Langer who the previous year had won by 10 and in the process had beaten the
4 round record score by 7 shots.
Other players who didn’t make the cut were the 2 O’Connors
(Jnr and Snr) , Colin Montgomerie, John O’Leary, Wayne Riley
(Sky Golf) and Frank Nobilo CBS Golf commentator.

Footgolf
the sport where players kick a size 5 football into a cup in as few shots as possible, is becoming one
of the fastest growing sports in the world. In 2013, the USA had two officially recognised FootGolf courses, and now
that number is over 300 courses in 43 States. Footgolf organisations are growing all over the world with the UK very
much to the fore and their nearest one to us is the 9 hole Foyle Club in Derry. But they are also beginning to pop up
around the Republic with courses in Dublin and a purpose built 18 Hole Foot Golf Course near Kinsale in Cork.
The Tee Shot

The Bunker Shot
You may run before kicking your Tee Shot and other shots except for when in a Bunker or on a Green when you must be stationery

On the green you may leave the flag in but you
cannot use the sole of foot to roll the ball.
