by Ms. Burnette's Kindergartners Stony Point January 2004 We dedicate our book to Mary Lou Lundgren who helped us make our pictures and borders, and who helped us do a lot of research about our animals. How we did it! Our book took a long time and a lot of steps. First, we each had to create a picture. The background was the first step, and everybody thought about the colors that might be in our animal's habitat. We used watercolor paints. Then, we used lots of different materials to make our insect, reptile, or mammal, just like Eric Carle did when he wrote books. We used fadeless art paper, shiny and holograph paper, and cut magazines. Next, we read books by Jan Brett, and we really liked the borders in her books, so we made pattern borders around our pictures. We used greasy craypas for that. The art was finished. Then the work of creating a book began! We wanted to include sounds that each creature might make or we might hear in its home. We talked about every single picture, and the letters that produced the sound were added to the top of each page. It's been a lot of work but our book is great, and we are glad we did it! horse naaa naaa Horses neigh to say hello. hermit crab kl kl kl Hermit crabs clink their shells on rocks as they walk. box turtle h-s h-s Box turtles pull their heads in and out. cottonmouth ss ssss The poisonous cottonmouth is also called a water moccasin. bluebird twee twee Eastern bluebirds look for new homes in the spring. iguana hw hw hw This is Toejam's warning sound. honey bee bzzz bzzz Honeybees dance when they go home to the hive. copperhead t ch ch ch Copperheads flick their tail in dry leaves and sound like a rattlesnake. deer huh huh White-tail deer bark at night. duck kwack kwack Ducks honk to call a friend. cricket kr hr hr hr hr Crickets sing from the garden. chickadee fee-bee fee-bee Chickadees call when a red-tailed hawk is near. praying mantis baaaaaaa A praying mantis can hear bat sounds. woodpecker pek pek pek Woodpeckers peck for food on trees. luna moth ssst s s The luna moth strikes her wings together. squirrel chee chee Squirrels chatter and scold. snapping turtle t t t Snapping turtles have a worm-like tongue. hermit crab snap snap snap Hermit crabs use their claws to communicate. hummingbird hmmm hmmm Hummingbirds sip nectar from flowers. dragonfly z z z z z z Dragonflies beat their wings.
