SOUTH DAKOTA
Deadwood — The
Ultimate Wild
West Town
If your dream is to experience the Wild West as it once was
you should go to Deadwood.
Today’s Deadwood in the Black Hills of
South Dakota is an idyllic, small town with a
Main street lined with western style, square
brick houses. Deadwood offers a wild west
atmosphere because the town has been restored to look like it did in the 1870’s during
the famous Black Hills gold rush.

The famous gambler and gunslinger
Wild Bill Hickok is buried at Deadwood’s
Mount Moriah Cemetery. James Butler Hickok was shot in the back while
playing poker in 1876 and he is probably
Deadwood’s most famous resident even
though he was only in town a few weeks.
When he died, Wild Bill was holding a
pair of aces and eights, that series of cards
became known to poker players all around
the world as the “Dead Man’s Hand.” In the grave next to him lies another
western legend, Calamity Jane. The
woman whose real name was Martha Jane

Canary had a reputation as a tobaccospitting, foul-mouthed, beer-guzzling
woman who rode and shot like a man.
According to legend she was head over
heels in love with Wild Bill Hickok even
though he was already married.
It was widely known in Deadwood
that Hickok, who was married, had
little interest in Jane and that’s why
the townsfolk buried her next to him in
Mount Moriah Cemetery— so she could
spend eternity with him and they could
play the ultimate joke on Hickok.

Costner In Deadwood.
Jane many famous and infamous people
have called Deadwood home. Wyatt Earp,
George Armstrong Custer, Sundance Kid
and the explorers Lewis & Clark have
all passed thru in search of fortune and
adventure.
In the 1870’s Deadwood was famous
for gambling, prostitution and lawlessness.
Daily shootouts and other re-enactments
along with souvenirs and ornaments in
the store windows on Main street keep the
memories of the old wild west alive.
Prostitution and lawlessness are gone,
but gambling is still thriving. Casinoes
with colorful names like Mustang Sally’s»,
«Cadillac Jack’s» and of course «Hickok’s
Hotel & Gaming Casino» dominate Main
street.
Famous movie star Kevin Costner
must have fallen for Deadwood while shooting the movie «Dancing with wolves» in
the Black Hills. He and his brother bought

an old building on Main street and
turned it into Midnight Star Gaming
Emporium.
The Costner brothers’ place is
both Main street’s flashiest casino
and a tribute to Deadwood’s wild
west past. Here you can play poker,
Black Jack or try your luck at several
slot machines. Costumes worn by
Kevin Costner in movies decorate
the walls and movies he has starred
in continually run on big screens.
All the action Deadwood has to
offer has made the small town of
only about 1250 residents a tourist
attraction for wild west fans both
nationally and internationally.
There are people who call Deadwood
«the world’s smallest metropolis»
because of its paved sidewalks and
public and private buildings you
seldom find in towns this size. n
