Over 50 people gathered at the Manton Ave Community Garden on April 14th for Southside Community Land Trust’s annual Neighborhood Hub Day. Besides the seed and compost distribution, the free Beginning Organic Gardening workshop taught new gardeners how to best plant and grow their plots. Workshop attendees learned how and when to effectively water plants, how to enrich soil with compost, and how to feed plants organically with fish emulsion spray. On Saturday May 12th, Olneyville’s streets were lined with well over 200 volunteers who worked tirelessly under the sun to make the neighborhood shine. Teams scoured neighborhood, from Volunteers clear debris from Glenbridge Ave to Valley Steere Ave Street and Atwells Ave to Olneyville Square. All in all, the day was a huge success. 200 trash bags and over 30 yard bags were filled to the brim with debris; tires and broken furniture were piled high on sidewalks; and leaves and sand were swept along the roads’ edge. The Joslin Rec soccer team helped Principal Kermen clear weeds, brush, and tree limbs from a vacant lot on Pope Street. Olneyville Square has a punch of color, where 263 flowers were planted. At the end of the day, volunteers gathered back at Riverside Park for a celebratory barbeque, music, and Y on the Move’s inflatable obstacle course. A big thank you to Aramark and Cozi Caterers for providing food, to the City of Providence for organizing trash collection, and to our generous sponsors: Citizen’s Bank, United Way of Rhode Island, YMCA of Greater Providence, and Webster Bank. 2 January 2012 Olneyville Neighborhood News A publication of the Olneyville Collaborative ECO Youth Encouraging Healthier Food Choices The Environmental Justice League of Rhode Island (EJLRI) has been working with corner store owners to stock and spotlight healthier options. Currently, EJLRI is launching a social marketing campaign geared towards middle and high school youth called SWAGG Snacks, which is being led by EJLRI’s high school yourth program called ECO Youth. Earlier this year the EJLRI held a raffle contest for D’Abate students. If they purchased a healthy snack at Sime Market, they could enter a raffle contest to win prizes. Sime Market and the students were happy with the project, so EJLRI decided to continue the momentum by giving out stamp cards to kids who bought healthy items at Sime. Students got stamps for each healthy snack item they bought. Once 5 stamps were collected, they could bring the completed stamp card back to D’Abate to redeem at the school store for prizes. Sime Market is pleased with the response and reports needing to restock fruits and healthy snack items more regularly! - by Amelia Rose To get involved in the Healthy Corner Store Initiative, call (401) 383-7441 or email [email protected] For more recipes and to learn more about healthy eating, visit: www.kidsfirstri.org For more information about farms in Rhode Island, visit: www.farmfreshri.org One Pot Bean Chili Ingredients (Serves 10) 2 (15 oz) cans Beans, undrained (pinto, black, kidney, etc) 1 (15 oz) can Tomatoes, canned or fresh, chopped 1 cup Vegetable or Chicken Stock 2 tbsp Chili Powder 2 tbsp Cumin, ground ½ each Onion, diced 1 each Bell Peppers, diced 1 each Zucchini, diced 1-2 Carrots, diced 2 tsp Oregano, ground 1 (8 oz) can Corn, drained and rinsed Healthy Hint: Look for Low-Sodium beans and stock. On Saturday, April 28, nearly 500 people joined forces to clean-up, spruce-up and freshen-up all the parks in Olneyville PLUS Water Place Park, and stretches of the Greenway and Bike Path from Providence Place all the way to Hillside Avenue in Johnston and beyond. This project was organized by the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council with tons of help from the Olneyville Collaborative members. At Riverside Park in Olneyville, over 200 volunteers transformed the park. Their accomplishments included building a fence around the community garden; finishing the community garden shed; weeding and mulching all the planting beds and trees; filling a gigantic dumpster with trash; painting murals, trash cans, signs and picnic tables; adding mulch to the playgrounds to keep them safe and clean; collecting almost 30 yards of trash from the park, the bike path and the edges of the Woonasquatucket River. An enormous group of projects occurred alongside the usual cleanup. WaterFire and Save the Bay coordinated an inwater cleanup of Waterplace Park. 40 City Year Volunteers along with many other community members filled hundreds of bags with trash, and cleaned and swept the sidewalks along the Riverwalk on Kinsley Avenue and Promenade Street. Teachers, students and parents collected trash, mulched trees and spruced up the entire area around the Paul Cuffee School, along the Woonasquatucket River. Rebuilding Together took on Donigian Park, weeding and mulching planting beds, painting garbage cans and benches, spreading wood chips at the playground and clearing out all the litter. Rising Sun Mills’ management, residents, tenants and other volunteers cleaned up trash in and around Ribs, Chicken, Beef, Pork, Soups, Sandwiches, Salads, and much more! ,,,&+!)())%* $!% !$ !# .
