MHD Angular Rate Sensors - Applied Technology Associates

Every ATA sensor undergoes precise calibration and testing at the time of manufacture.
Performance parameters typically do not change significantly with time and use. However, we
recommend re-calibration every 12 months.
We also calibrate other manufacturers sensors and accelerometers on a custom order basis.
Calibration of angular motion and vibration sensors from DC to 2,000 Hz can be performed
using our dynamic calibration systems, and our shock testing can evaluate impacts from 50g to
2,000g. We can supply rate sensors and accelerometers on a custom order basis for distributors
and customers.
MHD Angular Rate Sensors
Precision Sensing, Measurement and Controls
ATA is the industry leader in the design of
rugged, precision angular rate sensors. Used
for everything from crash and ejection
testing, to precision platform stabilization
and line-of-sight imaging, our sensors are
available in both commercial and spacequalified versions.
Since 1984, our reputation has been built by
providing our customers with the finest
angular rate sensors available as well as
providing applications and long-term
customer support. ATA’s designs have
proven superior on the ground, in the air, and
in extended space flight. We combine our
patented
m a g n e t o - hyd r o d y n a m i c
technology with the finest machined
components, rugged microelectronics,
durable plastics, and encapsulating resins to
make sensors that survive the harshest
environments. Each sensor is dynamically
tested and calibrated to exacting standards.
What is an Angular Rate Sensor (ARS)?
Ÿ
ATA’s MHD ARS precisely sense and measure
jitter disturbances (e.g., base motion jitter) to the
nano-radian (nrad) level
Ÿ
Nano-radians are very small angles, for example:
1 nrad is about the diameter of a dart board
from Albuquerque, NM to the moon

Magneto-Hydrodynamic (MHD)
Angular Rate Sensor (ARS)
ATA’s Angular Rate Sensors are based on the
principles of magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD).
ATA’s patented products exhibit a number of
unique beneficial characteristics including:
• A dynamic range exceeding 100 dB
• Low noise floor less than 40
nanoradians
• Broad bandwidth from ~1 to >1000 Hz
• No moving parts for reliability and
ruggedness
• Very low cross-axis sensitivity
• Low linear acceleration sensitivity
• Integral electronics for maximum
signal-to-noise ratio
As a leader in design, manufacture, and distribution of precision measurement,
sensing, and control instruments and systems, ATA's Management System has
been certified to ISO 9001:2008.

ARS-15
ARS-14
The ARS-14 is our most sensitive angular rate
sensor. It is designed to work in a variety of highperformance applications, such as line-of-sight
stabilization and precision motion control
systems. The ARS-14 can measure angular
motions less than 40 nanoradians, and has low
sensitivity to linear acceleration inputs, making it
ideal for use in highly dynamic environments
such as aerial and ground-based vehicles.
Bandwidth: < 2 to 1000 Hz
Scale Factor: 20 V/rad/sec
NEA: < 50 nanoradians rms (1-1000 Hz)
Temp Range: -30°C to +60°C
The ARS-15 is our newest angular rate sensor
designed to fill the gap between the ARS-06 and
the ARS-14. With a noise floor of less than 1.0
microradian, small case size, and low sensitivity to
linear inputs, the ARS-15 is ideal for low power
airborne applications. The ARS-15 is suitable for
accurate, compact systems for line-of-sight
pointing and stabilization as well as motion
control.
Bandwidth: < 4 to 1000 Hz
Scale Factor: 1 V/rad/sec
NEA: 1 microradian rms (2.5-1000 Hz)
Temp Range: -35°C to +85°C
ARS-06 Triaxial
ARS-06 and ARS-06S
The ARS-06 is a popular addition to our lineup of
angular rate sensors. The ARS-06 is available in
two standard models: the ARS-06 and the ARS06S. The ARS-06S uses a single-sided power
supply commonly used in automotive crash
testing.
Bandwidth: 0.38 to 1000 Hz
Scale Factor: 06: 50mV/rad/sec
06S: 6.5mV/rad/sec
NEA: 06 < 80 microradians rms (1-1000 Hz)
06S:< 2.5 miliradians rms (1-1000 Hz)
Temp Range: -20°C to +50°C
The triaxial kit includes three ARS-06 or ARS-06S
sensors, three CA-06 cable assemblies, and a
triaxial mounting block, which becomes a 6
degree-of-freedom (DOF) measurement system
with 3 optional linear accelerometers added to its
mounting surfaces. The ARS-06S uses a singlesided power supply commonly used in automotive
crash testing.
Bandwidth: 0.38 to 1000 Hz
Scale Factor: 06: 50mV/rad/sec
06S: 6.5MV/rad/sec
NEA: 06:< 80 microradians rms (1-1000 Hz)
06S:< 2.5 miliradians rms (1-1000 Hz)
Temp Range: -20°C to +50°C
Dynapak 14
Three-Axis Accelerometer Package
A custom precision accelerometer package
measures low linear acceleration on satellites or
other precision platforms. The package provides
simultaneous acceleration signals along three
orthogonal axes with a commandable dual range
of +/- 25mG and +/-1000mG over a 16Hz
bandwidth. Two independent sensor sets (dual
redundant) are provided in a single enclosure.
Separate connectors are used for power and signal
connections.
Designed to measure jitter from airborne mirrors,
optical systems or lasers, and for accurate line-ofsight imaging platform stabilization, the
Dynapak 14 triaxial sensor packages measure
ultra-low level angular jitter in the submicroradian regime. All Dynapak 14s exhibit
noise equivalent angles (NEAs) of less than 40
nanoradians rms over a 2-1000 Hz integration
bandwidth and can incorporate selectable high
and low ranges to provide a large dynamic range
of jitter measurement.
Scale Factor Stability: < 1000 ppm
SF Temperature Stability: < 150 ppm / °C
Output Bias: < 5 mG
Output Noise: < 2 mG rms
Bandwidth: 2 to 1000 Hz
Scale Factor: 20 V/rad/sec
NEA: < 50 nanoradians rms (2-1000 Hz)
Temp Range: -30°C to +50°C
