March 2016
Dear Fellow Club Members,
February was another busy month. It started with the District 8 Arts
& Crafts Competition. Congratulations go out to the winners -Ruth
Lovell – Hand Embroidery, Mille Chmiel – Quilting, Peggy Daubar –
Miniatures and I was fortunate to receive an award in Knitting.
Congratulations to Linda Reece, our 2nd VP/Membership, and her
committee for another well-attended new member soirée. What a
wonderful way to get acquainted with our newest members and
socialize with friends.
Also congratulations to Dee Grosser, Education Chairman, and her
committee for holding the Bingo event. It was a fun night with lots of
camaraderie.
April 16, 2016 is the date for Fashionollia 68, which will benefit our
CSP’s charities. It is the biggest fundraising event of the year. Sandra
Hanna, Fashionollia Chairman, and her committee (which happens to
be the CSP Chairmen and other sub-committees) are working hard to
make this event the best ever. The cost of a regular reservation
remains $65, while Patron reservations remain at $125.
Reservations are available from Evelyn Yates. You can help support
the club and make this event successful by purchasing your
reservation at the next membership meeting in March--if you
haven’t done so already.
The Busy Fingers Thrift Sale is happening on April 2, 2016, so it’s time
to clean out your garage and bring items to the clubhouse that you
no longer need for the big sale. They will be setting up during the
week leading up to the event, and I know they can use your help!
Let’s all work together to ensure another successful fundraiser for
our Clubhouse. A Big Thank You goes to the Busy Fingers ladies for
working so hard.

PUBLIC ISSUES ~ ELENA COATES
Women's History Month is celebrated in March to correspond with International Women's Day on 8 March
and is a time to highlight the many contributions women have made:
 Margaret A Wilcox invented the car heater in 1893, and a combined clothes/dish washer.
 In 1887, Anna Connelly invented the modern fire escape with platforms between levels.
 Maria Beasely invented the life raft in 1882, as well as a barrel-making machine
 Psychiatrist Dr. Maria Telkes invented solar heating for residential housing in 1947.
 In 1899, Letitia Geer invented the medical syringe which could be operated with one hand.
 Florence Parpart invented the electric refrigerator in 1914. She also invented an improved street cleaning
machine.
 Nancy Johnson invented the ice cream maker in 1843. Her patented design is still in use.
 Some of the telecommunication technology developed by Dr. Shirley Jackson includes portable fax, touch
tone telephone, solar cells, fiber optic cables, and the technology behind caller ID and call waiting.
 Josephine Cochrane invented the dishwasher in 1887.
 Hedy Lamarr, a famous film star, invented a wireless communications system during World War II for
radio-controlling torpedoes. This paved the way for Wi-Fi and GPS.
 Marie Van Brittan Brown invented Closed-Circuit Television in 1969 to help people ensure their own security because of the slow response of police officers.
 Margaret Knight invented a machine to make square bottomed paper bags in 1871. She almost didn't
get credit when Charles Annan tried to steal her work claiming that it wasn't possible for a woman to create this invention. Margaret also invented a safety device for cotton mills when she was 12. In all, she had
90 inventions and 22 patents.
 In 1965, Stephanie Kwolek invented Kevlar, the life-saving material used to make bulletproof vests.
 Dr Grace Murray Hopper was a computer scientist that invented COBOL, the first user-friendly business
computer software system in the 1940s. She was also the first person to use the term bug in reference
to a glitch in a computer system when she literally found a bug (moth) causing problems with her computer. She was also a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy.
 According to Beer Historian Jane Peyton, Mesopotamian women were the first to develop, sell, and even
drink beer.
Presidents Message Continued...
When we recite our Collect I am always inspired by the phrase, “Let Us Forget Not to be Kind”. These simple yet
powerful words are as important now as they were when Mary Steward jotted them down in April 1904 as part
of the Collect for Clubwomen. Influential and prevailing words are often an important backbone to any
organization, and in this case, the words have the same impact today that they had over 112 years ago. We
must listen with our hearts, our minds, and our ears. Let’s remember that our club has a rich history of being
“generous and taking time for all things” and to avoid being “hasty in judgment.” At times, this can be hard to
do, but we all must continue on the right path.
With warmest regards,
Tuky

INTERNATIONAL OUTREACH ~Cindy Bower
International Outreach is celebrating this month with a special party to benefit children in Uganda. On 23 March at
1:00 pm, several club members will gather in the parlor to cut out patterns for children’s shoes, which will be sent to
Uganda where they will be finished (by local adults) and distributed to children who frequently must walk miles in
bare feet, which leads to cuts, sand flea bites and infections. Sole Hope, the organization that coordinates the
production and distribution of these shoes, was started by a young woman who, during a trip to Africa, learned that
millions of children in Eastern Africa, were suffering from severe jigger bite infections, leading to paralysis,
amputation, and, in some cases, death. She started Sole Hope to address this problem; and in 2013, she and her
family moved to Uganda where they work to solve the problems associated with jiggers in African communities.
If you would like to help us with our shoe cutting party, you can contribute in one of three ways: 1) donate denim
jeans or skirts and/or large plastic milk bottles, soap bottles, plastic placemats, 2 liter soda bottles and/or plastic
folders/binder covers; 2) attend the party and help us cut out the patterns (I currently have 12 people who have
signed up, but can probably take as many as 15-20) or 3) make a cash donation which will be used to purchase medical
supplies, including surgical gloves, cotton balls, medical tape, antibiotic cream, gauze, Band-Aids and stickers for
children. Thanks to those of you who have already donated money and supplies for the event.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day and Happy Easter.

Geography Quiz
Sea cruising is becoming an increasingly popular way to see the world…Howard Hillman, a travel authority with many
years of experience has identified the top ten cruise destinations. See if you can identify all of them. Happy Cruising!
1. Passengers see penguin colonies, soaring glacier cliffs and calving icebergs in the Earth’s southernmost continent.
2. Explore these remote islands where Charles Darwin observed unique wildlife that supported his evolution theory
3. Popular cruises to the Riviera, the Ligurian Coast, and the Costa del Sol are all located in this region.
4. Destinations in this part of the world include lush tropical paradises like the islands of Moorea and Bora Bora, but
the long open-ocean travel between destinations is a bit of a drawback
5. Photography experts and naturalists love the glaciers, fjords and snow-capped jagged peaks in this US destination.
6. Sailing inside massive, narrow, steep-cliffed fjords is awe–inspiring and beautiful.
7. A special opportunity on a cruise in this sea is a visit to the fabulous Hermitage museum.
8. The advantage of a trip in this region is to visit many nation islands…and the trips between the ports are short. A
popular destination from Florida.
9. This second US destination making the top ten is actually an archipelago of eight major islands, several atolls and
numerous smaller islets. Formerly known as the Sandwich Islands, these islands were formed by volcanic activity.
10. A frequent destination of college students and other “partiers”, this other “Riviera” includes Acapulco, Puerto
Vallarta and other west coast ports of call.
From the Busy Fingers ~ Thrift Sale
Anita Crose, Jordan Marin and Nancy Black
Save the date…. April 2nd is the Thrift Sale. Bring in new, forgotten, no longer in style, extra furniture and
back of the closet treasures. Someone will find them to be just perfect. Please place items in the Busy
Fingers room. Omit, large out of date TV’s, as they are too heavy to move. Thanks!

Jonquils and daffodils are the flowers that many
represent with March and the birthstone is the beautiful
aquamarine. There are two zodiac signs in March: Pisces,
from February 19 to March 20, and Aries, March 21 to
April 19. There have been three US Presidents born in
March: Andrew Jackson on March 15; Grover Cleveland
on March 18 and John Tyler on March 29. March is also
National Women’s Month, American Red Cross Month
and Fire Prevention Month. “The Star Spangled Banner”
became our beautiful National Anthem on March 3rd in
1931 and the Girl Scouts of America was founded in
March of 1912. Other important events this month include
International Women’s Day on Tuesday,
March 8th and Daylight Savings Time begins officially at 2

Things did not go as expected and our event was blocked by Darrell Stefany, President of EventFest, Inc.
with the permission Of Ye Mystic Crewe who has the contract with the City of Tampa. Suffice it to say, it
was an interesting day but many thanks to the volunteers That worked the event. We did proceed with
the parking of the pre-paid spots. Lesson Learned and we are going to work to get things ironed out for
next year or change the event.

And A Good Time Was Had By All…
We had a wonderful time at Soiree 2016! Members and guests were so generous with their time and
their talents—including the excellent cooking! Words can’t possibly communicate how thankful I am to
have so much help—that’s what the GFWC Sisterhood is all about!
By the way, just so you know how the phrase And A Good Time Was Had By All came about, please read
the following:
The earliest instance of this quip located by QI was published in a 1946 book by the prominent gossip columnist Earl Wilson. The actress who delivered the barb appeared in multiple films in the 1930s and 1940s
but is not well known today. The target of her ire was unidentified:
The tallish, beautiful actress, Leonora Corbett, can also claw with her painted lips. Seeing a reputedly loose
woman waggling past, Miss Corbett remarked, “There goes the original good time that’s been had by all.”
NO reflection on our evening of course!

Home Life ~ Joyce Dixon
Freedom Village offers apartments to people with
limited incomes, who have disabilities, and want to
be self sufficient. A group of us went to visit the
facility and threw them a Valentine Party. We had
cupcakes, ice cream, juice, and we gave each
attendee a box of Valentine candy. We had about
30 people attending the party and we enjoyed
meeting them and spending time with them and
they had a very good time celebrating Valentine's
Day with us.
After the party we went to Alpha House to deliver 40 Valentine bags for the
girls there. The bags were filled with 3 personal items, snugaboo socks, and a
box of Valentine candy. They will be distributed on Valentine Day and we know
the girls will be as happy receiving them as we were in packing them.
The Silent Auction for Fashionollia is well underway. We have been collecting
various items but certainly need more. A couple of items you might be
interested in are:
2 beautiful paintings by a local artist. One is of Lake Como with beautiful scenery and villas by the waterside. The other is a beautiful country home with a bridge and gorgeous trees and flowers.
We have 12 Bing and Grondahl collectable plates in blue.
A sandcast sterling silver cuff bracelet with 5 large rough cut amethysts.
We still need help with collecting items for the auction so please see if you have anything you want to donate and remember try to get a gift certificate when you go out to eat or go shopping.

The United States Congress has designated March 25th of each year as NATIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR DAY,
a day dedicated to Medal of Honor recipients.
March 25th was chosen to highlight this special day because it was on this day in 1863, that the first
Medals of Honor were presented to six members of Andrews' Raiders. (http://www.homeofheroes.com/
moh/history/history_first.html)
The Medal of Honor is bestowed on any member of the United
States armed forces who distinguishes himself/herself
"conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life
above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action
against an enemy of the United States."
Currently, there are 77 living Medal of Honor recipients. The oldest is 95 (Robert D. Maxwell) and the
youngest is 26 (Kyle Carpenter). 6 earned their Medals in WWII, 7 in the Korean War, 54 in the Vietnam
War, and 10 in the War in Afghanistan. By service, 3 received the MOH while serving in the Air Force, 51 in
the Army, 16 in the Marine Corps and 7 in the Navy. One MOH recipient is still on active duty in the Army
(William D. Swenson). Among the recipients, is former US Senator Bob Kerry.(http://www.cmohs.org/livingrecipients.php?p=1)
Take this day to celebrate our heroes.
