!! Addition Sentence Sack ! ! Directions Shoulder pads are optional for this hands-on math game! Label a set of paper sacks with the numbers 1-10 and load them with colored chips or other manipulatives (they just need to have different colors on each side). Each bag should be loaded with a different number of chips depending on which addition facts you are teaching. Place these bags around the room and ask your children to find a partner. Provide each student with a game sheet and a pencil. When you blow the whistle (yes, you are the coach), each pair moves safely to a bag. They shake the sack and dump the contents on the table. The children work together to determine the addition sentence they just dumped out (i.e. 2 reds, plus 4 yellows, equals 6 total chips). Both children record this on their game sheet. These steps (shaking and writing) are repeated until the first box on their game sheet is filled. Pairs raise their hands to be checked by the “coach.” When the majority of the class finishes, have your students stand behind their chairs, blow the whistle and start a new round. ©Kelley !
