STUDY PLANNING
The Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences offers
studies for exchange students in English in the
following programmes (the details of the
courses will be explained in Chapter 4):





Physical Education (Bachelor level
studies)
Health Sciences (Bachelor and Master
level studies)
Sport Management (Bachelor and
Master level studies)
Sport and Exercise Psychology
(some courses of the Master’s Degree
Programme)
Biology of Physical Activity (some
courses of the Master’s Degree
Programme)
Note that it is possible that all interested
students cannot be accepted to all of the
courses. The degree students of the
University of Jyväskylä have the first
priority.
Please, check the selection criteria and
prerequisites from the course information!
You can also choose courses from other
Faculties/Departments of the University of
Jyväskylä. The list of these courses is available
at www.jyu.fi/en/study/programmes/courses.
Please, discuss with the International
Coordinator of the Faculty first and then contact
the person in charge of the course in question
to find out if you are eligible to take the courses
that interest you.
How many credits/courses should
you take?
The normal workload of full-time studies is
about 30 ECTS credits per one term. One credit
equals approximately 27 hours of work
(including everything, e.g. lectures, seminars,
homework, exams etc.) You will decide with
your home university how many credits you
have to complete during your exchange stay.
Please notice, that a new study environment in
a foreign country as well as the new language
of studying may make it difficult to complete as
StudyGuidefor International ExchangeStudents
Autumn2016
many credits as in your home university. You
should take this into account when planning
your studies.
Learning Agreement and Letter of
Confirmation
In the Learning Agreement (study plan) you will
list the courses which you intend to take during
your exchange stay at JYU. If your home
university requires you to fill in the Learning
Agreement, please bring it to the International
Coordinator of the faculty in the beginning of
your studies, she will sign it.
If you need a certificate of your exchange stay
at the beginning and/or end of your exchange
period, please contact the International
Coordinator also for this. This letter of
confirmation can be signed earliest one
week before the departure date.
How do you register for the
courses?
Students have to register separately for each
course and/or exam they want to take. The
registration is normally done in the electronic
Korppi-system at https://korppi.jyu.fi. You will
get the user account and password in the
beginning of the semester. An introduction to
the Korppi system will be given during the
Orientation Programme.
The list of accepted students to each course will
appear in Korppi a couple of days after the
registration deadline has passed.
Exceptions:


For the independent study courses the
registration is not usually done in
Korppi, but you should inform the
International Coordinator and/or the
teacher of the course that you are
interested to get further information.
For the book examinations, the
registration for the exam is done in
Korppi (under ‘Exams’) at the latest one
week before the exam. Late
registrations are not accepted!
5
Universityof Jyväskylä
Facultyof Sport andHealthSciences
You will always need to check that you have
the study right to the specific course.
Remember also to check the language of
instruction. If nothing has been noted about
the language, the course is usually given in
Finnish!
Course Feedback
Your opinions are very valuable for us, because
proper feedback will help us to further develop
our courses in English and this will benefit the
future international students. Therefore, please
take a few minutes of your time to evaluate the
courses you have taken at our faculty. Course
feedback is collected by the teachers and/or by
the International Coordinator.
MODES OF STUDY
Depending on the course and its requirements,
various modes of studying and teaching are
used. The course may, for example, include
lectures, practical lessons, group work, written
assignments or a written exam. The modes of
study are explained in the course descriptions
and the teacher usually also goes through the
methods he/she will be using in the beginning
of each course.
Usually, in order to gain the credits for the
course, all the parts of the course need to be
completed. In some courses, however, it is
possible to complete some parts (in these
cases, the ECTS credit load for a specific
course is marked e.g. ‘3-5 or 3/5 ECTS’).
Please also remember that there is often
obligatory presence in the lessons. If you miss
too many lessons, you will NOT pass the
course and gain the credits. If it however
happens that you, because of e.g. sickness or
another compelling reason, miss a lesson,
contact the teacher in order to discuss some
compensatory assignments etc.
Book exam
Some courses may include or are completed
solely with a book exam. A book exam is a
written examination for which you study, by
yourself, specific literature announced in the
course description and answer questions in

writing on designated exam days. The books
can be borrowed from the JYU main library.
Book exams can be taken on general
examinations dates.

Registration for a book exam
In Korppi system, you can search the exam
with the code of the course (go to exams >
registration) and take care of the registration
there. Each exam is opened for registration
three weeks before the actual exam date. If you
wish, you can take more than one exam on the
same examination day.
The deadline for the book exam registration
is always one week before the exam date at
12:00 (at noon). Please note that late
registrations will not be accepted!
General information on the exam
session
The faculty examinations will start with a roll call
in alphabetical order at 8:15 in front of the
examination site. You will be called by your
name and the exam questions will be given to
you in the examination envelope.
You will be guided to your seat. Turn off your
mobile phone. Leave your bag beside the wall
of the examination room. You may take with
you to your seat only the objects that you
need for writing and erasing (pens, eraser,
ruler, pencil-sharpener) and your ID card so
you are not allowed to take bags, books,
handouts etc. to your seat. You are also not
allowed to have any dictionaries in the exam,
unless otherwise agreed with the examiner. In
this case the permission needs to be stated in
the question paper. The necessary sheets of
6
Universityof Jyväskylä
Facultyof Sport andHealthSciences
paper for answering the examination will be
given to you by the proctors.
The students should take a seat at every
second chair and wait for the exam to be
announced started before opening the
envelope. The time when the examination ends
will be written on the board. Usually the
examinations last for 4 hours. You can leave
when you are ready, but not during the first 30
minutes.
You are expected to be silent from the moment
you enter the examination room to the moment
you leave it. If you have any questions, raise
your hand and one of the proctors will help you.
Students with disturbing behaviour are expelled
from the examination room. Please note that
exams are individual efforts in Finland and that
speaking to other students during the
examination is considered cheating which
will have serious consequences. In case of
cheating, you will fail the examination and your
home university will be notified.
When you have finished answering, give the
answers and the question paper to the proctors
sitting in front of the students. Your identity will
be checked, so remember to keep your
identity card or your passport with you.
NOTE! If you need any special arrangements
for book examinations, please remember to
inform the international cooridinator well in
advance AND remember to mention this in your
registration for the exam!
Electronic examinations
The eExam is an electronic exam that students
can take in an eExam room located on the third
floor in the Jyväskylä University Main Library.
The eExam room is equipped with camera
surveillance.The eExam room is available
during the opening hours of the University Main
Library, so it gives students extra opportunities
to take exams outside the general examination
dates.
Some of the book exams of our faculty can also
be taken as eExams. Information about these
courses will be delivered to students by email
during their studies.

concerning e.g. the expected layout of essays:

Writing is an efficient way of learning and it
supports the goals of academic learning: one
produces a text that combines one’s own ideas
with the ideas from the source materials.
Written assignment is an essay and the topic is
based on the source literature or other given
material. With the help of the literature one
analyses and interprets one’s own findings and
experiences on the topic. In a written
assignment one should, for example, compare
the information given in various sources,
illustrate and describe the phenomenon, draw
conclusions on statements and generalize
individual explanations and findings to cover
broader thematic entities. Writing usually
generates new ideas which help you to analyse
your thoughts and take the text forward. It is
good to have some time for this process.
Instructions for writing an academic
paper
The purpose of an academic paper is to display
the student’s accumulated knowledge and
understanding of the literature on a particular
subject. It is advisable, before beginning the
paper to write an outline of its contents – a
small summary. This allows the student to have
a clear picture of the sequence of the paper and
ensures the quality of the end result.
The structure of an academic paper may vary
but generally it should have four phases:
 Introduction: Here the purpose of the
paper must be stated and an outline of
the main arguments should be given, as
7
Universityof Jyväskylä
Facultyof Sport andHealthSciences



well as an introduction to the main cited
literature.
Body of the paper: Here the main
points of the paper should be detailed
and discussed, remembering always to
reference correctly any information that
it not your own. All points must be
supported with evidence from the
literature.
Conclusion: In this section the main
conclusions of the paper are described
and summarised. No new information
should be brought forward in this
section.
References: It is of the utmost
importance that the references, both in
the text and in the reference list at the
end of the paper, are correctly cited.
You can ask the International
Coordinator for the detailed instructions
on the layout of an academic paper,
including clear notes on writing
references. These instructions should
be carefully followed in the writing of all
academic papers submitted during your
studies at the faculty.
The length of an essay will vary according to
the instructions of specific lecturers. Be aware
that a long essay should have a clear and
coherent structure. An academic paper should
be written in proper academic language,
references should be marked in the text and on
the last page there should be a list of
references.
Lecture diary/ Learning log
A learning log, or a lecture diary, is an
instrument used for learning and personal
growth. Its aim is to help you to become more
conscious of your learning. The learning log
should contain an account of and reflections on
your learning and not simply a chronological list
of events. The learning log will also improve
your knowledge and understanding of specific
topics by obliging you to think about them
carefully in order to record them accurately.
Examples of what the learning log should
contain are:
 a description of what topics were
covered in class
StudyGuidefor International ExchangeStudents
Autumn2016




a critical reflection on the topics covered
a description of what and how you
learned
a discussion of what you agreed or
disagreed with
criticism, fully supported with clear
reasoning
In order to produce a good learning log and
make the process easier you should take notes
in class on what is being discussed and review
the notes at the end of the day to clarify the
concepts in your mind. The length of the
learning diary depends on its level of detail. The
lecturer of the course should give an estimate
for how long it should be.
Group work / presentation
In many of the courses there can be group work
tasks which may also lead to a group
presentation. Each group is given a specific
topic on which they deepen their knowledge by
reading literature and discussing their ideas
among the group. The teacher will also give a
deadline for the final presentation or written
assignment. The group then divides the task
among its member and sets a timetable for their
work. Each member of the group is expected to
contribute to the work and entire group will be
assessed jointly on their output. Also peer
evaluation can be used in order to see how well
the group functioned during completing the
task.
Online course / Optima learning
environment
In an online course the studies are conducted in
an electronic learning environment on the
Internet. All of the studying can take place in
the e-learning environment or it can be just a
part of the course, among other teaching
methods. The web is used as a tool of
communication and conversation between the
students, a mode of independent studying,
according to self-study material, for information
retrieval and submission, for distributing
studying material or supporting studying
through the web. At its best, the web offers the
possibility to practice versatile skills in data
processing, communication and group work.

ASSESSMENT
In the University of Jyväskylä, the ECTS
grading system is in use. This means that the
courses, assignments and exams are graded
with the scale 0-5, as follows:

5 (excellent)
4 (very good)
3 (good)
2 (satisfactory)
1 (sufficient)
0 (fail)

If your home university uses some other
scale, it is their responsibility to convert
the JYU grades to correspond your own
system.
Some courses are graded simply: pass
(HYV / fail (HYL). NOTE! If your home
university requires an assessment
with the scale 0 – 5, please let the
teacher know about this well in
advance.
The results of courses and exams will be
announced within two weeks in Korppi.
ABOUT PLAGIARISM
The Language Centre of Jyväskylä University
defines plagiarism as follows:
“Plagiarism is the process of taking someone else’s words, ideas,
stories, pictures, music, presentation materials, or other form of
intellectual work and using them as your own. This violation of
academic integrity might happen in a variety of ways, both
intentional and unintentional. While the most serious acts of
plagiarism involve deliberately presenting others’ ideas or words
as your own, simply forgetting to cite a source used in your work
is also a form of plagiarism. Crediting all of your sources is a
fundamental principle of the scientific community… “ (Language
Centre 2005)
The Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences
acknowledges the fact that attitudes to
plagiarism vary between cultures. For example
copying an essay or parts of it on the internet
and pasting it to one’s own work without citation
and reference is plagiarism but in some cultures
considered to be a minor misconduct. Therefore
it is important to state the opinion of the Faculty
of Sport and Health Sciences on the plagiarism
issue clearly: Plagiarism is not acceptable in
any forms. If such a conduct is noticed the
consequences can be very severe. The student
will naturally fail the course in question, and the
exchange student’s home university will
automatically be notified. It is also possible to
cancel the student’s study right at the University
of Jyväskylä if this kind of misconduct is
noticed.
The idea of this is not to discourage the use of
existing ideas and findings while writing an
academic paper. The purpose is simply to
stress the importance of this issue – remember
to express clearly your sources of information!
Please see the document “Guidelines for
Academic Essays at the Faculty of Sport and
Health Sciences” for further information

Stay informed
Most of the course-related notifications are
done via the Korppi system, and/or by sending
an email message through the emailing lists of
courses. It is, therefore, important to pay
attention to your email and remember to
provide in Korppi (in the personal details)
the primary email address that you use.
Information for international students at the
faculty can be found on the website
https://www.jyu.fi/sport/en/study. This site
includes information on the courses and also

More and more often, we use Facebook as an
