A
fter a fifth place finish in the
Cohasset Tournament on
Jan. 16, the Lynnfield-North
Reading wrestling co-op,
coached by Craig Stone, won
three more matches to run its
record to 16-3-1 overall, and 3-0
in the Cape Ann League (CAL).
On Monday, Jan. 16, at the Cohasset Tournament, the Pioneers finished fifth out of eight
teams, just 1.5 points out of
fourth, while only competing
in 10 of 14 weight classes and
placing eight wrestlers.
Stuart Glover (106 pounds, 3-0,
first); Will Glover (126 pounds,
1-2, fourth); Joe Reardon (132
pounds, 2-1, second); Adam
Rossetti (138 pounds, 3-1, third);
Connor Stead (145 pounds,
3-1, third); Sean McCullough
(160 pounds, 3-1, third); Antho-
ny Wilkinson (170 pounds, 2-2,
fourth); and Kevin Farrelly (195
pounds, 3-0, first) picked up the
points for the locals in this annual event. It was the first career
tournament final for both Glover, a freshman, and Farrelly, a junior, according to Stone.
Then on Friday, Jan. 20, the
Pioneers came home to defeat
Peabody, 42-36. Glover won his
match by forfeit. Tim Leggett
(120 pounds) won by fall in just
59 seconds. Reardon did the
same in his match in just 45
seconds. Rossetti, Aaron Gautreau (145 pounds) and Stead
(152 pounds) all won by forfeits.
Wilkinson came out on top in his
match by fall in 1:42.
The match started at
160-pounds. Peabody led, 276, after the first six weight classes, with only Wilkinson getting
a win for the “Black and Gold.”
But Lynnfield stormed back,
taking six out of the next eight
for the win.
“Leggett – back into the lineup after a month’s absence due
to injury – Reardon and Wilkinson keyed the win with first period pins,” said Stone.
Last Saturday, Jan. 21, in a
quad match at St. John’s of
Shrewsbury, the Pioneers took
care of Canton, 42-39, and Malden, 22-12, before losing to the
host team, 45-33. It took Glover
4:45 to win by fall versus Canton.
Gautreau, wrestling in the 138
pound category, experienced
similar results in 1:41. Rossetti
(145 pounds), a senior captain,
also won by fall to record his 17th
dual meet victory and 97th team
point this season. Stead (152
pounds, 1:39); McCullough (160
pounds, 5:50); Wilkinson (182
pounds, 4:21); and Farrelly (195,

Northshore Stars Hockey News
Mites:
The Northshore Stars Mite
2 team faced off against Winthrop on Sunday morning at
Kasabuski Arena. After the Stars
came out of the gate swinging,
they didn’t let up until the final horn sounded. Angelo Covino stood between the pipes
and proved that good things
come in small packages. He
made several key saves, shutting down two breakaways
and keeping the Stars on top.
Cole MacKinnon had a hat trick,
and Shane MacEachern netted
two on one shift to lead the
Stars’ scoring. Mason Ciampi,
Thatcher Lewis, Davin McClory, Brayden Anderson, Connor Driscoll, Jaedyn Encarnacao and Michael Marenghi also
each netted a goal. After a great
offensive and defensive effort
by all the Stars, they came away
with a 12-2 win.
The Mite 3 team faced a
tough Marblehead team on
Sunday. Alex Rinaldi was the
bright spot for the Stars as he
did all he could do to keep his
teammates in the contest by
making brilliant save after save.
For the majority of the game,
the Stars hung tough and got
great play from Paul Smith, Vanessa Hall and Anthony George.
But Marblehead was too much
for the squad, and the Stars let
the contest slip away at the end
for a tough 15-8 loss.
Squirts:
The Squirt AAA team trav-
eled to Lawrence to take on the
Northern Cyclones. The Stars
got on the board first with a
great rush by Dylan Damiani,
who then slid a beautiful pass
to Sean Flynn in the slot. Sean
then fired it past the goalie
for the 1-0 lead. In net for the
Stars was Anthony Poccio, and
he was brilliant early on and
made a few acrobatic saves to
keep the Stars alive. But the Cyclones were too much for the
Stars; they lost, 5-1.
The North Shore Stars Squirt
AA had a back-to-back matchup with the Methuen Rangers Squirt 1 team this weekend. The first game took place
at the Valley Forum, and the

5:05) won by fall, as well. Farrelly’s pin resulted in the clinching
points for the team.
“The key to the match was
our seven pins, while Canton
only had six, plus one decision,”
Stone said.
Canton led, 21-6, after five
matches, but the Pioneers battled back, winning six of seven matches to go ahead, 42-27.
The Lynnfield boys were unable
to fill the last two weight classes due to injury and illness, but
the lead was still big enough to
secure the first win in the quad
match, nonetheless.
The Lynnfield co-op took
on Georgetown/Ipswich at
Georgetown in a match that decided the CAL championship on
Jan. 25 (after press deadline).
On Friday the team will host
the CAL/NEC JV Tournament
at North Reading, starting at 4
p.m., and then on Saturday they
will host the CAL/NEC Varsity
Tournament at the same venue,
beginning at 9:30 a.m.
