Brussels, February 22, 2016 – Polyethylene Lumicene® M3427 is used for the
manufacture of artificial grass yarn whose main application is synthetic turf for
sports fields. Turf carpets constructed with these yarns demonstrate a resistance
to fibrillation twice as high as market reference octene-based linear low density
polyethylene. This was evidenced by extended Lisport testing according to EN
15336 and results were confirmed by leading yarn producers. The gain in lifetime
of the sports field can be estimated at >50%.
Based on this gain, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions are
reduced by 33% per year for a full size football field used at typical playing
intensity (1500 hours per year). For one field, this represents a savings of 63 GJ
in non-renewable energy demand and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
of 2.7 t CO2-eq per year.
The significant environmental improvement that Lumicene® M3427 provides has
been recognized and awarded with the Total Ecosolutions label. This eco-label is
based on international ISO 14020 and 14021 standards governing environmental
claims, particularly the accuracy of these claims. The compliance of the labeling
process for Lumicene® M3427 with these standards has been verified by an
external independent auditor.
Lumicene® M3427 is a metallocene linear low density polyethylene (mLLDPE)
based on Total’s proprietary metallocene polyethylene (mPE) technology.
Lumicene® mLLDPE is characterized by exceptional mechanical properties such as high environmental stress crack resistance (ESCR), high dart impact
strength, high Elmendorf tear resistance - and optical properties - such as high
transparency and high gloss - whilst enabling high processing speeds. Its
benefits to Total customers and end users are widely recognized in a host of
applications and markets like multilayer packaging films, caps & closures,
rotomolding and artificial grass.
