Fenton High School: Accelerated English II Summer Read 2014 Part I Instructions: Over the summer you will be reading and analyzing three speeches. You can obtain them online at American Rhetoric: http://www.americanrhetoric.com/ (Audio recordings are also available online so you can hear the speech). Search under the Site Search by author’s name. For each speech, you must post one response (minimum 300 words) and at least one reply to another student’s response (minimum 100 words). Furthermore, in each of your responses, you are required to accurately embed at least one direct quote. Elie Wiesel: “The Perils of Indifference” (post analysis by June 13; respond to peer by June 15) Hillary Rodham Clinton: “Women’s Rights are Human Rights” (post analysis by June 27; respond to peer by June 29) Cesar E. Chavez: “The Mexican-American and the Church” (post analysis by July 11; respond to peer by July 13) NOTE: You can always post early; therefore, plan accordingly. Analysis Directions: For each of the following questions make sure you provide varying concrete examples to support your answer. Make sure you accurately embed quotes and paraphrase information. 1. Describe/explain the historical context of and reason for the speech. In other words, what is the author’s exigence? (Exigence is the need, necessity, and/or urgency that causes someone to write or speak. Exigence also explains the situation and/or occasion that prompts the writer or speaker.) 2. For whom is the speech intended (e.g., primary target and secondary audience)? 3. Based on your analysis of the speech, what is the speaker’s purpose and what tone is used to achieve this purpose? 4. Analyze how the speaker develops his argument. Focus on four examples of rhetorical strategies (e.g., logos, ethos, pathos, symbolism, imagery, figurative language, syntax—sentence length, word order, repetition, punctuation, sentence type, parallelism) and explain how each helps the speaker achieve his purpose. *Make sure you accurately embed your quotes and paraphrase information.
