Liz Jump We are entering the ‘season of mist and mellow fruitfulness’, or so says Keats in his Ode to Autumn. Certainly the apples in the vicarage garden are ripening, and the pie we made yesterday was enjoyed by all. The mists are also evident, no more so than late on Monday night when, driving back home, I couldn’t even see the road ahead. The seasons are, once more changing. The children are back at school, and the traffic that was so evident over the summer is abating a little as those who have enjoyed our area over the holidays return to work. This summer has been glorious, apart from the odd rainy spell, and I hope all feel refreshed and renewed. As I sit in my study I am struck by the contrast of the picking up of the pace workwise, as schools and organisations restart, with the slowing pace of nature outside my window. The trees are changing colour, the grass has slowed its growth (not a day too soon for me and my lawnmower) and there is a sense of the land beginning to get ready for winter. I love living in an area where I can see these changing seasons. It keeps me in touch with the land, with creation, and with the God who provides and sustains it all. In church too our seasons are changing. By the time you read this we will have held our Harvest Festivals, and will be looking forward to the end of our church year, and the start of the next on Advent Sunday. But before we reach that, we have the season of remembering. Officially the Kingdom season, it is a time when we look back at those who have gone before. All Hallows – much taken over by the festival of Hallowe’en - is the time we remember those who have gone before us, through the feasts of All Saints and All Souls. We will hold our service for all those who have lost a loved one, and share together in remembering those we miss. We will remember as a community on Remembrance Sunday those who lost their lives in the service of their country – all the more poignant this year with the anniversary of the beginning of the First World War. And we will end this season with the feast of Christ the King, when we remember that the Christ who died for us, now reigns in heaven, and holds all – living and departed – safe in his love, and celebrate the fact that, however many times the seasons change, however fragile life can seem, however we are feeling, the love of God remains constant and eternal. Pat 01603 782523 or Julian on 01603 782883. GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER I like October, the last month before we change clocks and lose our evenings. We must use those good days wisely to get important jobs done. Tender plants must be protected, if they are in pots, either put them in a sheltered spot and cover, if necessary, or put them in the greenhouse/conservatory. If this is not possible, cover with fleece before the frosts. If you have not lifted your summer bedding, do it now and dig over, adding some organic matter. Plant out your daffs and tulips. Use taller varieties for sheltered spots and shorter varieties for more exposed areas. This is a good time to tidy up your borders, redefine your edges, weed thoroughly, dig over and add some kind of organic matter. Prune your shrubs; reduce the height of those tall ones, like Buddleia davidii. With your lawns, this is the last month you will be running the mower over them. Only tip your lawns this month. If you like to have a good lawn, scarify it two or three ways, clear all the debris and over seed any thin areas. If you have a drainage problem and a lot of compaction, spike your lawn with a border fork or, for larger areas, hire a spiker. In the veg garden, harvest main crop potatoes, beetroot, carrots and other autumn veg. Store in a cool, dry place. Check your brassicas, remove yellowing leaves, secure your netting and stake well. Take down any remaining climbing beans, leave roots in to return nitrogen to the soil and put your plants on the compost heap. In the fruit garden, pick any remaining apples and pears and store carefully. Pick any soft fruit which is still cropping. In the pond area, tidy up your plants, remove any yellow leaves. Check your netting cover is secure for the winter and it is able to stop leaves entering. Remember, do not put off those jobs, get them done whilst the weather is fine and enjoy what you are doing. On 3rd October we are hosting a Gardeners’ Question Time at 7:30pm at Hoveton Village Hall. You are welcome to bring family and friends. We have three great Horticulturalists on the panel, Ben Potterton Ian Roofe and Bill LeGrice. Entrance is £3 on the door and includes light refreshments. THE PROBUS CLUB OF BROADLANDS The Probus Club of Broadlands is a club for men, who have worked in a professional or business capacity and who are retired, semi-retired, or approaching retirement. The purpose of the Club is to provide an environment for socialising between Members, who share common interests and to enable them to increase their social contacts. The Club is non-political and non-sectarian. It meets on the last Wednesday of the month at the Norfolk Mead in Coltishall. There was no speaker at the August meeting. For some time the Committee had been reviewing ideas for enhancing Members involvement in meetings. There is always good interaction with Speakers following their presentation, with a wide variety of questions coming from Members, but it was thought that more could be done. The Committee decided to try a different format for the August meeting, with the objective of involving Members in a formal debate on a topic of mutual interest. The topic was deliberately selected to be controversial so that it was bound to elicit a wide range of views. It was emphasised to all concerned that the debate was not to be taken seriously and that it was not necessary that the participants believed in what they were espousing. Its purpose was to provide entertainment and fun, and to get everyone involved. The Chairman for the debate initially asked for a show of hands so that a count could be made of those that were for the motion and those against. Another vote was to be taken at the end of the proceedings to determine the outcome and to see how many had changed their minds. A Speaker for the motion then gave a three minute talk explaining reasons why Members should support his proposition, with a view to strengthening the opinion of its original supporters and to change that of its opponents. This was followed by a Speaker against the motion and his presentation followed a similar course for the alternative position. Following a lengthy group discussion, in which all Members stated their opinions, the Speakers each summarised their position to include relevant points made by Members. The final vote on the motion was then taken. The Chairman then declared that the motion was not carried. It was heartening to see the level of participation and the strength of feeling of those giving their views. Despite some initial reservations, the meeting proved to be a great success with everyone enjoying the opportunity to make their contribution. A repeat is likely in the New Year. Oh, and the subject of the debate and its outcome? Ah well, you had to be there. Why not become a member? New members are always welcome. Those interested in joining should contact Ian Anderson on 01603 737298. We hope to see you at our next meeting. WROXHAM AND HOVETON LIONS CLUB We are all looking forward to a relatively quiet two months before we start on our round with Santa and his sleigh in the lead up to Christmas. The tombola in the precinct has now finished after a very successful season and our Charity Shop is now open only 6 days a week. The Craft Fair we held last month was well attended and we will be holding another on Sunday 2nd November again at the Youth and Community Centre, Hoveton. We are pleased to invite you all to Afternoon Tea on Thursday 16th October at the Wroxham Masonic Hall from 2:30 to 4:30pm. Tickets are £6.00 and can be obtained from the Lions Charity Shop or Lion Suzanne. Entertainment will be provided by the Jazz Annie Trio and proceeds will be divided between Annie Slater’s charity Worsted Day Centre and the Lions local charities. We will be holding a collection outside Roy’s on Saturday 18th October, where we will be launching our “Penny Card” campaign, demonstrating that every penny donated is given to the cause. Our little community group has recently entertained at three local pensioners groups. On the social side, members enjoyed tea and cakes in one of our lady members garden and on Friday 24th October we will be having a games evening at the home of another of our members. As a result of our Motor Show, we were able to donate over £2,000 to the East Anglian Air Ambulance, EACH and our own local charities account. The Charity Shop is still short of good quality bric a brac and any donations would be very welcome. This month’s £100 Charity Shop Draw goes to the National Deaf Children’s Society, who was nominated by Pam Dutton of Hoveton, who donated goods to the shop. Wroxham and Hoveton Lions are looking to welcome new members, both women and men, so if you would like to make a difference in your local community and have a little time to spare, we would welcome your help. Just give our President Lion Dave Barnett or our membership chairperson Lion Suzanne Barnett a ring on 01603 782002 and they will answer any questions you may have. Anyone is welcome to come along and see what we are up to on our meeting nights the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month in the Broadland Youth and Community Centre, Hoveton. Our meetings start at 8pm. We are a friendly bunch of people, who enjoy serving their community, whilst at the same time having fun. Lion Dave Barnett, President. HOVETON & DISTRICT CONSERVATIVE COFFEE CLUB Our next meeting at The Hotel Wroxham will be on Thursday 23rd October at 10:30am, when we shall have a talk from Barbara Nicholson on Wind Engine Punps. Contact Tel. No: 01603 783490. WROXHAM BURE VALLEY ROTARY CLUB We are now well into our busiest time of year. Holidays are over and we are planning and doing a lot of activities. Our joint open air concert with Broadland Rotary Club at Wroxham Barns, featuring The Blue Sueders in aid of the Benjamin Foundation and First Responders went well as the weather cleared and a good crowd turned up, meaning almost £2000 was raised, which was split 50:50 between the two charities. Also the club barbeque went well, although passing showers slowed down some of the cooking! Planning is well advanced for our spectacular Masked Charity Ball in aid of EACH (East Anglia Children’s Hospices), who are building a new hospice on the south side of Norwich next year. This takes place at Dunston Hall on Saturday 18th April 2015 and includes a three course meal and dancing to Lee Vasey. Tickets are £55, but only £50 if purchased before end October and are available from Anne Kittle, telephone 07887 523071 or [email protected] and are selling well. We are aiming for a full house to ensure we maximise the money handed over to EACH. The club are working with our home venue of Wroxham Barns to install a coin collecting wishing well in aid of rotary charities and we have also involved Broadland High School in a competition to design the actual wishing well. We are now at the judging stage, and will shortly be announcing the winning design and moving on to the construction stage. Our next big event will be our Santa house Christmas collection, and work is planned to repaint and smarten up the house during November in time for Santa to join us on our local street collections. Our up-to-date programme through to the end of 2014 is now on the web site - if you have not already done so, have a look at it as there is something to interest everyone. If our lively social group with its great balance of committed fund raising and interesting meetings and visits sounds good to you, we are always looking for new members. We welcome both men and women from all walks of life, so if you are interested in joining us, please come along to one of our meetings, where guests are always welcome, we meet Monday evenings from 7pm. Our meetings generally take place in the restaurant at Wroxham Barns and include a two course meal. Visit our website on www.wroxhamrotary.org.uk for more information or contact our president, Jonathan King on 01603 784482. WROXHAM & DISTRICT LADIES’ LUNCHEON CLUB We meet on the first Tuesday of each month (excluding July, August and September) for an excellent lunch, followed by a talk on a variety of subjects, which is always interesting and entertaining. New members and visitors are always welcome to join us for good company, and to hear speakers on a wide variety of topics. Mrs Jenny Atkinson on 01603 472556 or 01692 535932 will be happy to give you further details. WROXHAM FOOTBALL CLUB The 1st team has enjoyed much better results so far this season and are currently in the top five; a far healthier position than last season. After beating Yarmouth at Wroxham and Mildenhall away, we received a very tough draw in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup at Leamington, who play two steps above us in Conference North. That game is on 27th September, possibly before these notes are published. Depending on the outcome as to whether we are still in the competition or not, our scheduled home games in October are against Romford on Sat 11th and Thamesmead on Tues 28th, followed by Heybridge Swifts on Nov 1. Full details are on our website www.wroxhamfc.com or via Twitter @the_yachtsmen. Our gates have improved this season and we were very pleased to see the new Wroxham vicar Rev Liz Jump at our game against Barkingside. We hope she will visit again and that a few more locals will join Liz as all our club sides are playing some good football and there is always a welcome in the clubhouse. Supporters are now pleased to follow results via our large screen in the clubhouse, together with their half time pint or cuppa. Unfortunately, we have suffered from illness within the club recently and club steward Geoff Skeet has not been well along with Chairman Tom Jarrett. We wish them both a speedy recovery. This has put extra pressure on the remaining stalwarts, who keep the club going. We desperately need more help in a number of positions - including TREASURER. Please contact Secretary Chris Green on 783936 if you can help. Also, any bookings for the clubhouse can be made on this number or 426673 or via email [email protected]. We are now preparing for our Annual Fireworks Display, which this year is early, on Sunday 2nd November. We have a new firm to set off the fireworks with some new effects. Full details elsewhere in this issue of the Bridge. UP THE YACHTSMEN NORTH NORFOLK SPEAKERS CLUB David Beecroft, outgoing President of North Norfolk Speakers Club, recently received the highest accolade of Distinguished President’s Award from Toastmasters International, in recognition of his leadership of a successful and high performing club. New President David McNaughter, a founder member of North Norfolk Speakers Club in 2002 and its first President, said: “I was delighted to present this award to David, who has guided the club through a tremendously successful year. Under his leadership, the club has gone from strength to strength and I hope to continue David’s success in the coming year.” North Norfolk Speakers Club meets on alternate Wednesdays, 6:45pm at North Walsham High School, Spenser Avenue, North Walsham. Guests and new members are always warmly welcomed. 1ST WROXHAM GUIDES Wroxham Guides have an active and varied programme planned for the autumn term. After the Patrols Leaders meeting, the first full meeting was held at Eaton Vale, where Guides had a go at kayaking, raft building or a climbing activity on the high ropes. Having said goodbye to Lauren, Sophie, Emma, Nancy, Josie, Harriet and Natalie, who have all moved up to the Senior Section, we welcomed Caitlin and Charlotte, who joined us from local Brownie Units. Activities this term include water safety, chocolate, bag packing, attending a pop concert at Wembley Arena, a sleepover, making decorations for the Christmas Tree Festival and a Christmas Activity Camp. As 3 Wroxham Guides and 5 members of the Senior Section are going to Sangam next summer, the 4th World Guide Centre in India, our plans have moved up a gear. We have booked places on the Develop Your Potential Event, a Community Action session; the insurance is sorted; those taking part have taken part in some fund raising events, with more in the pipeline. Sangam was opened in Pune in 1966 and the swimming pool was built in 1974 – paid for then by the Australians. Recently, the pool developed a large crack and needs rebuilding at a cost of £40,000. Wroxham Guides have developed a challenge and badge, which we are encouraging other units to buy as it is in our interest to ensure the swimming pool is ready for our use next August. The next 1st Wroxham Guide fund raising event is the Pamper, Health & Cake Night on Friday 10th October, from 7pm at Hoveton Village Hall. Enjoy a mini head massage, a manicure or pedicure, facial or make over. Come on folk, spoil yourselves, bring a friend, buy or order a cake; chat to a personal fitness trainer, a Slimming World consultant or just enjoy a chat over a cake and a cuppa. There will be a raffle, a chance to win various prizes donated by the beauticians and some to of the other stall holders attending the event. There are a couple of tables / places left, if you have a skill or service to share. Kate, Leader 1st Wroxham Guides; 01603 722665; [email protected] 1ST HOVETON BROWNIES The Brownies have been very busy during the run up to the summer break. In June, the Brownies enjoyed 3 of their meetings at Hautbois House, where they had a go at canoeing, nature trail and aerial runway (zip wire). This was partly made possible by a generous donation from the Hoveton & Wroxham Lions. In July, we went on a visit to Barton House Railway, Wroxham. The girls had a fantastic evening learning all about the signalbox, looking in the museum and riding on two different miniature trains. At our last meeting before the summer, we had a “Mad Hatters tea party”, which the Brownies organised for their Hostess badge. They designed & sent out invitations to their guest, brought in cakes, biscuits & decorated their own tables and had party games. A great end to a hectic few weeks! These activities were towards our Big Brownie Birthday celebrating 100 years of Brownies. If you are aged 7 - 11 and interested in joining our exciting Brownie group, please go to www.girlguiding.org.uk/brownies to find out more or contact Aimee Douglas (Brown Owl) on 07825326923. BARTON HOUSE RAILWAY 01603 782008 www.bartonhouserailway.org.uk [email protected] Open 3rd Sunday of the month from April to October from 2:30pm to 5:30pm (A regular boat service operates from Wroxham Bridge FOR EVERY RUNNING) Unfortunately a footnote in last month’s publication was not correct. Details of the two September runnings will be in the November issue as they both fell outside the closing date for contributions to the October issue. The Junior Day proposed for Saturday 23rd August was postponed until better availability of members. The Jake Afford Memorial Loco appeal continues to grow and now exceeds £6,000. A coffee morning is planned for Thursday 30th October at Dickerson’s Diner from 10 until 12:30. (See poster). Track donations for the New 7¼” gauge line project (The Museum Line) is now well on the way and has reached a little over 152 yards of a 600 yard target. It is hoped that ground work will soon be more noticeable, but as with everything, has to rely on volunteer’s availability. Our Third Sunday Running on 17th August saw the highest takings from trains for many years. It was a busy day with fine weather and sunny intervals. Technical problems prevailed throughout the afternoon, but thanks to staff for maintaining an uninterrupted service. The usual alternate after running meeting took place. Our first August Bank Holiday Monday Running on 25th August was so disappointing and could have been so much better, had it have not rained throughout the afternoon, what a comparison from the previous Sunday. Just over 100 visitors braved the elements and staff kept the railway running under difficult conditions. Our “NEW” drive your own train event was operating, which gave a good deal of enjoyment. Railtrail Tours visited us again on Thursday 28th August, taking in Wroxham Signalbox, as well as BHR. Staff ensured the visit was enjoyable and interesting with a good train service operating. BHR2 (portable 7¼” gauge) attended the Mid Suffolk Railway Steam Gala on Saturday & Sunday 13th & 14th September. Weather was good, but visitors few. Around £130 was taken. A final note of cheer is that almost £1200 was raised from the three events at BHR in August. OUR FINAL THIRD SUNDAY RUNNING IS 19th OCTOBER. THEN THE SANTA SPECIAL ON SUNDAY 21st DECEMBER 12noon to 3pm. A chance for the children to meet Father Christmas on the train in his Railway Grotto and receive a named gift. Go First Class and enjoy a festive meal in our diner. Advance Bookings necessary. Further details 07749 806351 or 01603 736901 e-mail: [email protected] WROXHAM WI Due to unpredictable weather conditions our garden meeting, which was meant to be held at our Presidents house was moved to Wroxham Church Hall (our usual meeting place). It was decorated beautifully by the committee to look like a street party with bunting, colourful table cloths and little flower vases. They also made the delicious party food and deserve a huge thanks from our members for all the catering provided throughout the year to make our events that little bit special. The trip to Sherrington Little Theatre was a great day out. Arriving in Sherringham by train it was a stroll down the lovely Main Street, then a pre booked lunch, before heading off to the theatre to see “Caught in The Net”, which was hilarious. Our October speaker is Lynne Kerr, who will be telling us about “The Benefits of Aloe Vera”. A very interesting subject and one that we will all be keen to hear about. It is hard to believe that another year for our WI is nearly over, with our annual meeting coming up in November. This is also the meeting, where you can dig out those old favourite poems to share with everyone, so all contributions will be gratefully received. An outing to The Theatre Royal in Norwich is being organised for January 2015 to see “Sister Act”. More information will be given at a later date. If you would like friendship and a really great afternoon out, please come along to Wroxham Church Hall on the 3rd Wednesday in each month and you will be made very welcome. Moira Holden HOVETON WI Following our August break, members at our September meeting were taken on a trip round Britain by our speaker Mr. Goeff Worton. We started at Tilbury and the first stop was Invergorden, where we heard about HMS Natal being blown up in the harbour and saw the beautiful Natal Gardens. On round the coast of Scotland we heard about the herring girls of Stornoway and from Tobermoray went across to the Holy Island of Iona. Next came Dublin and the Scilly Isles, before heading back via The Channel Islands. This month is our birthday meeting, when we will be joined by members from other local WIs to enjoy a visit to Historic Prague with our speaker Mr Roy Mclean, followed by afternoon tea. The November meeting will be our Annual Meeting. Our meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month at 2:15pm in Hoveton Village Hall, Stalham Rd. Visitors and new members are always welcome; for further information, phone Sue on 01603 783387. ROYAL BRITISH LEGION WOMEN’S SECTION WROXHAM, HOVETON AND DISTRICT BRANCH At our October Branch meeting we will be entertained by one of our Members, who will be bringing along one of her collections. There will also be our usual raffle, refreshments and time to chat. Tuesday 21st October is the date at our usual venue Trafford Walk Community Room Wroxham at 2pm. Ladies, please come and visit for a couple of hours, bring a friend, we will always give you a warm welcome and there is no obligation to become a member immediately. May we also remind you that a background in the Services is not necessary if you would like to become a member, just a wish to help with the provision of care and support to the ex-Service Community’s Widows and Children. For any further information, please ring 782312. ROTARY CLUB OF BROADLANDS BLUE SUEDERS CONCERT 10 AUGUST 2014 On Sunday 10th August, despite Hurricane Bertha’s best efforts, one of East Anglia’s finest tribute Bands “The Blue Sueders”, with Pip Duffy as lead singer, entertained an enthusiastic crowd to a variety of songs. From Ballads and Pop to Rock & Roll, from the 60s right up to date. Finishing the evening with a tribute to Elvis. The venue was Wroxham Barns; Ian Russell and his team pulled out all the stops to ensure the event went as smoothly as possible. This Concert was a joint venture with our daughter club Wroxham Bure Valley and proceeds, after disbursements, from ticket sales and the raffle, raised a considerable amount of money for The Benjamin Foundation and Local First Responders. Our thanks go to all who purchased tickets and braved the blustery and chilly weather, St John Ambulance, our fellow Rotarians of Wroxham Bure Valley, Ian Russell and the team at Wroxham Barns, Wroxham businesses for providing some superb raffle prizes and of course “The Blue Sueders”. Broadlands Rotary is always looking to welcome men and women from all walks of life into our club, so please ring Richard Mayer on Norwich 715796 or visit www.rotaryclubofbroadlands.org.uk. HORNING GET TOGETHER CLUB Come and join us at Horning Village Hall on Tuesday 14th October at 2:30pm. Daphne Howlett will give us a glimpse into the world of shells, with many for us to look at, followed by our monthly raffle. We are a social club for both men and women, over 50. £5 annual subscription and 50p refreshments. WHB TWINNING ASSOCIATION Our August 20 year anniversary Twinning visit here has been voted a resounding success by both guests and hosts, all went extremely well, new venues greatly enjoyed and admired, and even the weather turned up trumps and did not rain on our parade! We welcomed everyone at Wroxham Yacht Club, a lovely setting, and all enjoyed the buffet supper provided by their hosts, new families were introduced and old acquaintances renewed. Friday saw us in Norwich, first of all, a short tour for new members or a bit of shopping and then a river boat cruise through the city in the sunshine. Then it was on to Great Yarmouth for a quick supper, fish and chips for many, and afterwards the Hippodrome Circus, which they all really loved. Saturday we reconvened at Neatishead Village Hall at lunchtime for a picnic and a games afternoon, indoor bowls, kindly led by some of the local Bowls Club and a village quiz; great fun. The evening was also spent there with a Barn Dance and delicious supper, and we were presented with a lovely plaque depicting our two bridges, Wroxham Bridge and Montjean Bridge, by one of their local artists, which we hope will be installed on Granary Staithe. Sunday is always a day with hosts, when many families get together, go on outings, boat trips, visits to local attractions etc. and then our last day was spent in Southwold, where the sun came out again and everyone enjoyed the beach, the pier, the harbour area, shopping or whatever took their fancy. Very early Tuesday morning they left, after a rousing chorus of Auld Lang Syne, much hugging and kissing, a few tears and many promises to meet again next year in France, or sooner if possible in many cases. Anyone who would like to join us, families with children learning French at primary or secondary schools, people who love going to France or enjoy new challenges, do contact us as we would love to fill up a coach next August. Speaking French is not essential: many of our French friends enjoy practising their English. The French Conversation group resumed their meetings on 10th August at Maggie’s in Belaugh and discussed our Twinning visit and how much they had enjoyed it: they will meet again on 8th October at Sheila’s in Wroxham for a discussion on family and ancestors. Jane will supply any details about this friendly group on 01603 782496 or [email protected] The Book Club really enjoyed “Tiny Songbirds far away” by Christie Watson, Pat’s choice, at the end of August and will tackle Robert Grave’s “Good-bye to All That” on the last Wednesday of September at Sheila’s in Wroxham. The committee will meet mid-September to plan, hopefully, some social and fund raising activities for the next few months and our AGM. If you would like any more information, please contact us via our chairman, Peter, on 01603 782733 or [email protected]. COUNCIL NEWS BROADLAND DISTRICT COUNCIL I am so pleased to be asked to contribute to The Bridge and hope to become a regular contributor. It is a real privilege to be the District Councillor for the Wroxham Ward representing Belaugh, Rackheath, Salhouse and Wroxham. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who voted for me. It was close run, but I hope that over the next nine months I can convince you that my focus is local issues, particularly as I live locally and they will affect me to. Broadland District Council (BDC) is proud to deliver high quality services at the lowest possible cost to everyone in the district. Your council tax has been frozen for five years with no reduction in services. By the time you read this, you should be benefiting from the “Recycling Revolution”, which starts across Norfolk from 1st October. For the first time residents will be able to put plastic food pots, tubs and trays, juice and soup cartons, glass jars and bottles, as well as everything you could recycle before in their recycling bin. Just put everything in loose and we can work together to stop recyclables going to landfill. Our area is seeing a great deal of change and will see even more in the future. There is currently development in Hoveton and Wroxham, and further development is planned for Rackheath. It is imperative that we get the infrastructure we need and the affordable housing that will give people, particularly young people, the opportunity to get on the property ladder, anything less will be unacceptable. I will be fighting to ensure it is something we all have the opportunity to enjoy in the future. Coupled with development it is vital that we continue to ensure that jobs are created. I am really pleased that Broadland has the lowest number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance, at 1.22% and we have reduced unemployment in the Wroxham Ward over the last year. I was delighted to attend my first engagement as a councillor, at the opening of Carrowbreck House on 9th September. Carrowbreck House will provide facilities for 16-19 year olds, who want to do courses, such as Child Care, Sports and Activity Leisure, Public Services, Activity Leadership, Customer Service, Business Administration, Equine, Animal Care and Music Technology. These courses are generally National Vocational Courses (NVQs) and will set young people up for success in the future. Broadland Council Training Services (BCTS) also provide apprenticeships and last year the young people achieved an 81% success rate. I am sure BDC can do more, but we need your input to realise this. Let me know your thoughts and how I can help to enhance YOUR area. I look forward to hearing from you. Fran Whymark [email protected]; Mobile: 07907163123 HOVETON PARISH COUNCIL – www.hoveton-pc.org.uk At our September meeting, it was agreed to bring the following application to the attention of residents, due to the significant grant contributions, which will be made towards this work, but with limited access for the public after completion. “Planning Application Broads Authority (BA) 2014/0248/FUL Creation of reed beds by pumping lake sediment into geotextile bags to create bunds, back-filling the areas behind with more sediment and planting these areas temporary fish barriers Haugh’s End Road, Lower Street, Hoveton.” Several councillors attended a site visit on 28th August, followed by extensive discussions at the meeting on 1st September. It was felt that the required statutory publication carried out had not been sufficient for an application of this importance; and there appeared to have been a lack of site notices displayed. The PC has now written to the BA asking that any decision in respect of this application be adjourned until a further and more extensive public consultation is carried out. Councillors have also included reference to the following in their letter “That the sinking of fish barriers (gabions filled with rocks) may become a permanent obstruction to the entrances to the Broad and that a legally enforceable mechanism should be put in place, so that there was an enforceable obligation to remove these at completion of the project;” and “Due to concerns over the lack of public access to the Broad bearing in mind, the amount of public money involved in the project the BA be asked to include a condition on the planning permission (if granted) requiring extensive public consultation over the project and for a public access plan to be prepared and agreed by BA before implementation of any planning permission.” The BA Planning Committee meeting was held on 12th September, but at the time of writing any decision reached at that meeting is not known. Granary Staithe – By time you read this, our planned event on the Staithe on 21st September will have taken place. Due to councillor time constraints, it was not possible to choose a date that allowed us to publicise the event more fully in The Bridge, but it did allow us a small opportunity to show our appreciation to those who had helped with the purchase and improvement of the Staithe for public benefit. One of the wherries from Wherry Yacht Charter was moored in the dyke and the Norfolk Concert Band added to the atmosphere. Three picnic tables have now been sited on the Staithe and grateful thanks must be given to the Barnes Brinkcraft team, who accepted delivery of the tables and ensured they were delivered to site; also to Danny from the Hotel Wroxham and Kevin from the Thai Restaurant, who assembled the tables. It was truly an exercise in community co-operation. We now await delivery of 2 new litter bins! Wroxham-Hoveton Good Neighbourhood Scheme: Just a reminder that this scheme went live on 15th September. It is run and staffed by vetted, insured and trained volunteers, who can help isolated and vulnerable local people with simple tasks in and around the home. For help or to volunteer please call 07501 362793. NORTH NORFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL MESSAGE FROM COUNTY & DISTRICT COUNCILLOR NIGEL DIXON Brook Park, Hoveton: A range of issues about this new housing development have been raised over recent months and I met with Persimmon representatives in September to discuss where responsibility rests and how they will be resolved. There were too many for me to list in this article, but the majority involved progress in the provision of various facilities on the estate, and the care and maintenance of open areas, footpaths and roads. The meeting was very helpful to convey concerns about the correct interpretation of plans, the scheduling of work, standards of finish, future maintenance of open areas and verges and street cleaning. All the new roads, foot/cycle ways and open areas will be adopted at some stage so that NCC and NNDC will take over the future maintenance once they have been finished and inspected to ensure they are at the correct standard. Many of you have either observed or complained that open areas like: the new roundabout, the lagoons at the site entrance and either side of the foot/cycle way linking Stalham and Tunstead Rd have become overgrown or unkempt. Just to be clear, responsibility for these rests with Persimmon while construction of the development is in progress and until they have been formally adopted. Moreover, NCC and NNDC do not have any effective means to force Persimmon to keep them to an acceptable standard while site construction is in progress. Persimmon has responded to complaints, but not promptly, nor always to a good standard. The wide verge on the south side of the cross field foot/cycle way was cleared for the upgrade of the path and installation of the lighting; this area had previously been allowed to overgrow naturally for the benefit of wildlife. It is likely this verge will return to natural overgrowth with just the edge being trimmed to keep it clear of the footpath. It is also intended that the lagoons will be kept as wild flower meadows and thus not regularly cut. I have been working with representatives of Hoveton Parish Council and Summer Drive residents in my dealings with Persimmon and collectively we will keep pressure on, so that problems are reasonably resolved and to ensure NCC, NNDC and HPC do not get “short changed” on these issues in the adoption process or with unforeseen problems in later years. I welcome your views on these or any other matters, which concern you. My contact details are: Tel 783885 or e mail: [email protected] or [email protected]. ARTICLES & PRESS RELEASES ASHMANHAUGH & BEESTON PRESTON ROOMS Oh what an array… It was only last month I was informing everyone of the then forthcoming Village Show scheduled for 6th September and now at the bat of an eyelid here I am reporting on what was truly a successful day. With 6 categories, 30 classes, 25 individuals submitting more than 300 separate entries, the tables were bursting with an array of Single Stem Roses, Cacti, Vases of Garden Flowers, Fuchsia Heads, Ugliest Vegetable, Longest Bean, 3 Tomatoes on a plate, Jars of Jam & Pickles, Victoria Sponges, Breads, Rolls, Art work – Photos & Paintings, Knitwear, Vegetable Faces, Fruit and Vegetable animals to say the least. Each class was awarded a 1st, 2nd & 3rd place certificate, with the 7 Groups being awarded 1st, 2nd & 3rd place Pendants. Points were then given to the top 3 in each class with these being added up to provide the names of the 3 Top Scorers from the event. Terry Francis with a score of 21 was 3rd overall, Pam Culley was 2nd with 23 and the overall winner, who went away with an etched glass memento along with some useful gardening equipment, was Sandra Francis with a top score of 24. As she said on the day, “won by a potato!” After having 2nd thoughts in the morning, she entered some potatoes that went on to win her that all valuable 1 point. Over £170.00 was raised on the day from the entry fees for each class, along with the tea and cakes on sale during the afternoon, and from the auction that followed from the items exhibitors had donated. The lists of those whom require thanking are too long to mention here, but I do need to relay special thanks to Sally Church, our independent & knowledgeable Judge, who had her work cut out awarding the prizes. Pam Culley for helping to organise the event, to all those that entered or whom just popped in during the afternoon to view & have some tea and cake, and to those that placed successful bids during the auction. Besides rising much needed funds for the Preston Rooms, the event showcased the many talents of the local community and what fun people could have by coming together. So if this has wetted your appetite, the calendar of forthcoming events are: 19th September Church Bike Ride Fish & Chip Quiz & Supper Please note the change of date th 25 October Hot Pot Night 29th November Music Night Preston Room Event organised by Preston Room Gardening group. MICHAEL EGAN The committee of the Wroxham & District Branch of the RNLI and local businesses were deeply saddened by the death of their former treasurer and committee member, Mike Egan, on 29th August. Mike worked extremely hard for the RNLI and helped raise a tremendous amount with all his business contacts, including the prestigious Savoy in London. He was a gently giant in every sense of the word and they will all miss him greatly. Reg & Val Ovenden would also like to recognize the much-valued support Mike gave to The Bridge magazine over many years, and to themselves as a personal friend. Mike’s cremation was held at Eltham crematorium on 22nd September. Donations in his memory may be made to the RNLI and sent to Linda White, Secretary, Wroxham & District Branch RNLI, Headley Copper, Horning Road, Hoveton, NR12 8JN. (Tel: 01692 630349).
