For these students it was all about

BEHIND THE SCENES
DR O.P. BHALLA HONOURED
WITH JAGRAN GEMS,
Scoring high marks in the Boards is a lot tougher than what it seems.. Vrinda Sharma a pass-out
from MRIS Sector 14 speaks to her colleagues and writes her thoughts on the stress and strain of
the Board Examinations
T
he students of MRIS, Sector 14,
Faridabad touched new heights this
year, as there were several students
who scored above 90% in the
boards, with the highest aggregate of
a whooping 96.2% and exemplary marks in
every subject.Very personal, and one to one
interviews were conducted of all the toppers, so
that it gives the readers an insight of their
thoughts and feelings, and inspires the juniors
who are yet to give the most vital, and the last
exam of their school life.
Bhisham Bhasin, who scored a commendable
96%, was asked that what according to him is
important to achieve the goal of high marks.
“The aim should be on the target, and all
distractions should be minimized,” was his
answer. “The results of my hard work done
motivated me to perform better in future,” he
further added. Mansi Kuma, who had achieved
the same aggregate percentage, confided that
the secret to good results lies in concentrating
to the fullest in whatever you study, irrespective
of the time. Kamaldeep Kaur, who scored a
94%, said that what brought her this percentage
was regularity in school and written practice to
enhance writing and speed.
What came across during the interviews
was also a lot of problems which the toppers
face during the exams. “The schedule of the
boards was stretched for a whole month. By
the time the month ended, all our energy had
drained out, ” said Simranjeet Kaur, as she was
asked about the major difficulty she faced
during the exams. Mehul Singh too had
undergone stress. “Preparatory leaves given for
respective exams weren’t at par with their
difficulty levels,” she said.
The interview was also aimed at glimpsing at
the future plans of the toppers, for whom a lot
of avenues from the best colleges have opened
up through their praiseworthy marks.Vrinda
Sharma is planning to take up English Honors
from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University.
Kajli Sharma wants to opt for BCom Honours
from the Delhi University. Mehul Singh is
interested in Economics Honours from the
same. Bhisham Bhasin aims at Civil Services.
Heena Singla reconsiders her decision of

achievers may not have scored this much and
they fully realize it.Very grateful to their loved
ones who supported them throughout, they
express the following. For Deepanshu, the
credit for his marks goes to his friends and
parents. Bhisham, the commerce topper, feels
that his parents were the ones who brought
him this far.
Akriti Tiwari, Aayush Aggarwal, Deepak
Dalal,Vishal Vashisht, Karan Gupta, Naman
Ladha, Sanam Mehra, Shubham Mahesh,Vijayta
Verma and Gurleen Kaur were also very
ecstatic at their marks.
The teachers of MRIS Sector 14 were
overjoyed at their students’ performance. They
were equally if not happier than the students
themselves. Here are the views they expressed
on the marks scored by their children, their
subject and the changes which are desired of
the CBSE curriculum. Amit, the PE Teacher of
the school, said that he wasn’t solely responsible
for the tremendous results in PE; his work was
just one sided, if the students hadn’t
reciprocated there wouldn’t have been so many
achievers. For Monica Hans, the business
teacher, the activeness of the class is what
stimulates her to give her full to teaching.
“Business studies is a very useful subject, and I
would love to see the curriculum made more
practical, so that the knowledge can be
incorporated into the every day lives”, she said,
when asked about what changes can be
brought about in the course. As a tip to score
more, she further added, “By working on their
presentation in the BSt paper, students can
obtain marks more easily.”
The same was asked to Monica Kumar, the
English teacher. “The English course lacks
more choices in the novels, and there is very
less emphasis on interactive plays, poetry and
prose.” When asked what she enjoyed the
most while teaching, she said that it’s just the
students’ jovial company and something new
that she gets to learn from her students
everyday.”
Aprajita, who also teaches English, said that
she was overjoyed at her students’ scores.
When asked about the efforts she had put in
her teaching, she very humbly replied, “not all
of us can do big things, but if the small things
are done well, all falls in place.”

BOARDS MANIA
Vrinda Sharma who appeared for her class XII Board
Examinations for 2013 , writes about the stress and
myths which students often go through -----
‘B
oards’- this very word fills almost all of
us with dread and aversion. Almost the
whole of our lives, we are told that
everything, right from our college to
our careers, is synonymous to what we score in
our board examinations. Parents, teachers, aunts,
uncles, and even our friends in the end lay so
much stress on these exams that we feel that to
give these exams are what we are born for. Class
XII becomes the most dreaded classes, instead of
being the most memorable last year of school.
Suddenly, all the aspirations of mum, dad, aunts,
uncles, their family friends and god knows who
depends on us as we are given fairly constant
reminders to score well in these exams. Watching
movies becomes a sin, and becoming an unsocial
creature, who shuts up in his room and studies
from 4 am to 12 pm is what is expected of us.
Family comparisons become the hallmark of
evening ( and later, afternoon, morning and nights
as well) and everyone you talk to has a very deep
underlying interest in what your future career
option would be, as if you are his long lost child.
Even if you are very determined as to what to do
ahead, your relatives at parties, weddings and all
the social occasions become very keen to thrust
their knowledge about different career streams on
your head, whether accurate or not.Your family
friends become superior to you, if they have
chosen a stream like law or medical, and you want
to take up something like English Honours.Your
best friends, who supported you through thick
and thin, start eyeing you as their competitors and
your higher marks in internals threaten them
inside out. Classroom gossips are replaced by study
plans ( often inaccurate to show that how less you
study). Every word from your teacher becomes
the precious golden apple, which will guide you
to the heights of life. So anyways, boards are
related to a lot of uncomfortable, unexplainable
and later, extremely funny incidences. As I went
through my first ( and thankfully the last) set of
boards exams, a lot of myths were decoded, and a
whole set of facts came before me, which I would
love to share with my juniors ( and hopefully
lessen somewhat of their trauma).
MYTHS BUSTED
● ‘Our whole career and life depends on
boards’.
Absolutely false. A good score in Boards helps us get
into renowned colleges, but in the end, colleges are
just mere stepping stones of your career. Your caliber,
hard work and right choices in the end can cover up
for poor score in boards.
● ‘Higher the boards’ percentage, more
intelligent you are’.
It’s one of the worst things I have heard about these
exams. It’s not necessary that the topper of the school
has the highest IQ. No offenses, but a lot of toppers I
met were more affluent in rote learning than actually
understanding the text. For them, intake of knowledge
was limited only to what the course demanded of
them. But yes, the most intelligent or not, boards
topper are definitely the most hardworking.
● ‘ You won’t be able to face anyone if you
score low’
Even if you flunk, you really don’t have to face anyone
besides your parents and teachers. Boards are just
exams, and a low score should simply be taken as a
learning experience. It’s not the end of life.
FACTS
● No matter what a big shot holds a workshop for
you and gives you tips on ‘what is expected to
come in boards this year’, please study everything!
2013 exams were the proof that nobody besides
the paper setters can tell you that what is to come
in the exams.
● Do not rely solely on the previous years’ papers.
Consider them practice papers, not full proof
guidelines.
● Your friends may tell you that they don’t/ hardly
study, but don’t base your preparation on theirs
because at the end of the day, they are going to be
far more prepared than what you expect.
● Quantity doesn’t matter, but quality does. You
may study for 10 hours a day, but still acquire
nothing if your mind and heart is not into what
you are reading.
● Please don’t forget that class XII studies are not
to pass the boards! Enjoy the subject, and derive
the most out of it. Each page is filled with stuff
to equip your knowledge in the long run. Don’t
just spill the information out on the answer sheet
and forget it forever. If you are truly dedicated
to your subject, the subject will never betray you
in boards.

The biggest difficulty I had to face while preparing
for the exams was the pressure which I had inflicted
on myself. My parents and friends always supported
me, and my teachers were always there for me
whenever I needed help. All this support from my
people helped me perform better.
Ashima ( 9.2)
CGPA system has helped me a lot to score better.
For me, there is a simple way to get good marks. If
you are in X standard, you should study for 10 hours
a day, if you are in XI, you must study for 11 hours a
day, and so on. Class X has been really wonderful
for me and without the help of my teachers and
parents, my grades would not have been these
much. I want to become a Software Engineer in
future.

Sahil Madan (10)
It wasn't tough for me to score a 10 CGPA ; all I had
to do was to get good grades in the FAs conducted
and give my best in the extra curricular activities.
My seniors, who had got such good grades
themselves, were my source of inspiration.
The Governance team is as follows:
Akash Mandal, Shibam Sarbswa, Vipin Battu, Pulkit
Matta, Rahul Sharma, Mohit, Kanav, Ujjawal,
Devansh, Rudraksh, Avinash, Neeraj, Anurag, Ratul,
I feel that the CGPA system still has many defects.
There should be more divisions as the one who has
got 100 is kept in the same bracket as the one
scoring 91. However, the CGPA system allows us to
be more creative and we are judged on all aspects.
Without the perpetual support from my family, I
wouldn't have been able to score this much.
Saloni Pasrija (10)
It is because of everyone's support that I could get
such good grades. I feel that the CGPA system has
made scoring a lot more easier. Now, irrespective of
whether you get 91 or 100, your grade will still be
the same.
Neha Shah (9.8)
I feel that the boards with the marks would have
been better, as we would have got to know the real
marks we secured. Scoring has become much easier
now. I want to take up non medical in class XI and
pursue BTech later.
Reya Mahajan (10)
The secret behind my success was regular practice
and success. My teachers and friends supported me
CGPA system is a lot better because of the benefit
of Scores Upgradation. For my grades, I would like
to give the credit to my dear parents, teachers and
to myself ofcourse. I want to pursue a Masters of
Science degree in future.
For me, scoring 9.4 was very tough. Maths and
Science are my weak subjects which really made it
hard for me to obtain much marks. But because of
the motivation of my teachers, I found success in the
end. In future, I want to do Mechanical Engineering.
Annanya Gupta (10)
with the CGPA system, there is lesser tension and
stress. But the only way to score a 10 CGPA is to
stay focused throughout the year and score well in
the Formative Assessments conducted.
Simran Thukral (9.4)
Aayush Garg (9.4)
The distinguished Jury Members were as follows:
ECE/EEE
1) Mr. Ajay BhatacharayaADVISOR, NIESBUD
2) Mr.S.Bhowal- ASSISTANT
GENERAL MANAGER,

3) Alok.K.Mittal- GROUP

4) Mr.Aditya Bhardwaz, SENIOR

eradicated the major differences in marks. I want to
pursue architecture after school. Without the
support of my father and the guidance of my
brother, I wouldn't have been able to score as much.
Nandita Mangla (9.6)
I would like to give a tip to my juniors, SSt was a lot
easier in the previous class, but it suddenly becomes
tough in this grade. One has to pay more attention
to it than before. CGPA system is not favourable
according to me, as the one who scores 95 and 99
will have the same grades in the end. My mother
and teachers are the reason behind my success.

njana Sharma is working as a PE teacher
currently in MRIS 21 C. She is incharge of all
the sports activities of the school. Born in
Hoshiarpur and brought up in Ludhiana,
Anjana’s first achievement in handball was when she
was in class V, when she played for her state, Punjab.
After a break of 2 years from the game because of
personal issues, she returned to it when she was in

she continued representing the state till 2007, till she
shifted to Faridabad after she got married.
“Anjana is a very humble soul, and has the
quality of perseverance which very few possess. She
is an ongoing silent worker who believes in
accomplishing the task. As a PE teacher, Anjana is
extraordinarily patient with the children and she
makes the children disciplined by focusing on self
discipline”, says Ikwinder Singh, Principle MRIS Sector
21, who encouraged the sports star at all times ever
since she joined the school.
Having heard about the numerous achievements
of Anjana Sharma, the image which formed in my
head was fully contrary to how the Sports Star came
out to be. The door opened and Anjana, holder of
various national and state awards in her gamehandball, walked in. Her attitude was devoid of any
pride or arrogance at her countless achievements; her
feet were firmly planted to the ground. Indeed,
humility was the first thing about her that struck me.
As I started the interview, her gentle voice made me
wonder how this over achiever and PE teacher at MRIS
Sec 21 disciplined the children, but as I proceeded with
my questions, she came about to me as a very strong
woman, extremely passionate about sports, who
indeed had the ability to instill the same vigor for
sports in her children.

● Any hurdles which you had to pass while
choosing an ‘off beat’ profession like

Yes, at that time in the state of Punjab and belonging
to the Sharma family, girls were not encouraged to
take up sports. We were pushed more into professions
like Accountancy and Engineering.
● Should sports be given more importance?
Yes, sports should be made an essential part of our

My brother and mother were the first ones who
encouraged my choice. Later, when I got married,
my husband and dear in-laws helped me pursue

EDUCATIONAL TRIP
Visit to Indira Gandhi museum
An educational trip was organized for the students of grade
IV and V to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum which was
an informative and learning experience for the students
Memories of school Educational trips are treasures which are a
learning experience and they are a welcome break in the
routine for both students and teachers. While their purpose is
essentially to educate in a recreational manner.
Manav Rachna International School, Sector – 14, Faridabad
organized an educational trip to Indira Gandhi Memorial
Museum on 4 May, 2013 for the students of Grade 4 and 5. The
trip carried fun, excitement and willingness to acquire
information along with it. The trip had loads of interesting facts
and findings especially for many of those who were visiting the
musuem for the first time. Students got acquainted with the
belongings of the Indira Gandhi’s family. Students left the
museum with the feeling of appreciation in their heart towards
such great leaders. The visit motivated students to learn more
about such places of historical and political importance.
MIND YOUR CONDUCT
A
dubious incident from the story of
Queen Victoria goes, when Queen
Victoria received a guest who poured
tea into his saucer and drank from it,
she promptly did the same. Good manners
dictated that making her guest comfortable
trumped Her Majesty’s standards.
In summer of 2009, Michaelle Jean, the
Governor General of Canada, ate raw seal
meat at Nunavut’s 10th anniversary
celebrations. She was criticized by much of
the international press. As in Europe, that time
the opposition to the seal hunts was on a high
and a ban on seal products was poised to go
into effect.
The Governor-General was apparently
inspired by a visit earlier to a High School in
Rankin Inlet, where she met with young
students and asked: "What do you want
people in the south to know about you?", and
a student responded: "The seal is our life; the
seal is our way of life." Her attempt to inspire
the youth of her home country got her in
public critics.
Different times and different places but
both stories are about respecting other culture
and being cautious about your conduct, with
grace.
Demising of good manners has become a
very common sight. Few of the biggest
bugbears which we come across are: those
who never bother to apologize for their
tardiness, those who never feel that it’s
important to place the chairs back in place
after the meeting is over, those who never
14 I MR REPORTER
bother to say thank you for a belated birthday
gift. The list is exhaustive, but the irony of
situation is that what seems boorish to some
seems perfectly ok to others.
Display of good manners is not restricted to
addition of polite vocabulary in our
dictionary; it is a few steps ahead of that. The
steps an individual takes to make the other
person feel comfortable, as illustrated in the
Queen Victoria’s apocryphal. Making other
people feel small is height of rudeness.
Be kind, be gracious, be charming. Ask
‘Can I disturb you’, before asking a doubt or
expressing yourself after a long pause. Say
‘sorry’ the next time you tramp on someone’s
feet. Don’t gaze at someone else’s attire, don’t
grudge, don’t be loud about other’s faults,
walk the extra step to make people in your
company comfortable. Good manners,
politeness is tax-free and does not change
with age, only gets more polished with
practice.
Let’s not keep good etiquettes a part of
daily lesson for the growing kids alone, let’s
adopt it! After all, kids learn the best from
what they see and do. There is reason why
Indian culture taught us the best form of non
contact gesture, Namaste! All it takes to
express reverence is a little bow along with
hands joined and fingers pointing your chin!
Step ahead and do your part in building a
softer society!

aking one realize ones’ dream is
yet another name for
education.We at MRIS provide
all the facilities and opportunities for our
students to have ‘hands-on’ or live
experience for their learning. We even
believe in giving International exposure to
our students and in this endeavor we
planned an eleven days trip to KENNEDY
SPACE CENTRE,NASA, USA where the
students could actually see the launch pads
and interact with the astronauts and peep
into their lives and see as to how they
actually live in space.
The thought of travelling to NASA was
initself so exhilarating and welcoming, and
the cherry on the cake was when we saw
that the itinerary included Washington DC
and New York along with Orlando. It was
finally decided that a group of 33 students
escorted by 4 teachers would undertake
the trip.
The places visited were not only orderly,
serene and pollution free but the greenery
all around made the country more beautiful
and placid and each one of us was motivated
to make an endeavor to make our country
like theirs.
The visit to Kennedy space Centre was
very knowledgeable and exciting.The
students were encouraged to take part in a
variety of activities like exposure to
simulators, designing rockets, and actually
sitting in a dummy rocket and giving orders
to various members of the crew where each

one experienced as to how things function
in space. They also experienced the G force
centrifuge, rocket launch in a simulator, crew
capsule design activity and many more such
experiences. The students had a fun filled
and interactive learning session with the
team of young budding astronauts and the
queries of each one was put to rest. The
mysteries remained no longer mysteries and
the questions that we all had were answered
to our satisfaction.
One of the most exciting and enriching
experience was to have lunch with an
Astronaut Mr.Jim Reily where the students
got a chance to interact with him and have
a first-hand information about his life style
when he was in a spaceship. Students were
even motivated and guided to take up
ASTRONAUTICAL ENGINEERING as
a profession which seemed very challenging
and interesting.
The content of STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering and Math’s) was
re-enforced. NASA visit and the activities
designed helped the students to improve
their skills and enhance their engagement
with STEM disciplines. It provided hands on
learning opportunities and professional
development activities. It was truly an
experience in itself and we feel proud and
blessed to have had an experience like this.

hough I am not wanderlust by
nature, however, when I was asked
if I would want to go to USA, I
grabbed the opportunity with both the
hands. One of the main reasons was
that I always wanted to visit NASA and
get hands on experience about the life
of an astronaut.
It was definitely an experience of a
lifetime. We visited Washington DC
which enabled us to see many places of
historic importance like Washington
Monument, the Capital, Lincoln
Memorial, Martin Luther King
Memorial, the White House etc. Apart
from that I saw many museums and
government buildings. Florida offered
the child in me to be free and enjoy
Disneyland, The Universal studios and
of course the Coco beach. The
understanding that the Student
Astronaut Experience Training offered
was an eye opener for all those who felt
that the life of an astronaut was all
glamorous and glitz, it made us realize
the hardships of the astronauts who risk
their lives for the welfare of humanity
at large. The lunch with US astronaut
Jim Reilly was another feather in the
cap.
New York is a city that never
sleeps. From amazing museums
and art galleries to theater to
restaurants to central park,
everything about New York is
amazing. It’s big, crowded, and fast
paced. At New York, we visited
one of the prestigious building
“Empire State Building” from the
spectacular lobby, all the way up
to the majestic 102nd floor
observatory every inch of this
building has a story to tell, Statue
of Liberty the symbol of freedom
and independence. The busiest
and happening place Time Square
was amazing.
New Jersey was an enriching
travel experience, and gave a
chance to both the students and
teachers to explore new cultures
and people.
India and the US are similar in
many aspects. The United States
of America is a land as diverse and
unique as its people like India. 'If
variety is the spice of life' then
American society is most certainly
at the helm of the spice list.
Americans are known to value
and respect their individuality.
They possess a spirit that has
remained undaunted even in the
eye of the storm of global
contradiction. The people of
America personify resilience and
equality. They take their friendly
nature to the next level and show
genuine concern for global issues.
Punctuality is another important
value which Americans are known
for. The country coined the
phrase “Time is Money’ and
obviously lives the phrase.
This educational trip most
importantly helped in invoking
many life skills in the students like
self dependence, feeling of
belongingness, dignity of labour,
team spirit and a sense of pride
towards one’s own country.

he school trip to the United States of America was truly
the most exciting and memorable trip I’ve ever
experienced. With the group of 32 lively children who
made every moment so special with their zeal and enthusiasm
that we wished that this journey never comes to an end. The
beautiful lanes of Washington DC and the history of American
wars and the memorials built in the memory of great leaders
and soldiers took us back to history and we were left amazed to
see the beautiful architecture.
The beautiful landscape and wide lanes of Orlando
mesmerized each one of us. Visit to the Universal Studio and
Disneyland took me 20 years back and I felt like a child enjoying
the thrill and the excitement like all other children. It was indeed
a different world altogether……..
After experiencing the simulation of a space shuttle and
rocket launch at NASA there was a new experience awaiting at
New York, the city of Skyscrapers. The high end brands spread all
across the streets of New York were so fascinating that all of us
couldn’t resist from shopping. We wished to stay at the Time
Square all through the night as it was like experiencing day with
lights all around. The street was bustling with young and happy
faces.
The entire experience cannot be summed up in few words
but will always remain as a wonderful memory in our hearts and
a great learning experience for all of us.

with our teachers went to one
of the most sought after
destination: THE UNITED STATES OF
AMERICA. There were 33 students who
went on this trip along with 4 teachers –our
Principal Ma’am Mrs. Mamta Wadhwa, our
junior coordinator Mrs. Monica Kathuria and
our two subject teachers Mrs. Monica Kumar
and Mr. Tanuj Sharma. We departed on 14th
May, 2013 at 4pm from the school and
reached IGI terminal 3 by 5.30 pm. We all
were very excited, as we reached the airport
we met our journey mentor Ms. Arandita
and took our flight to Washington D.C. we
reached our destination on 15th May.
Our journey started with a city tour
of Washington D.C. On the very first
day we visited the Lincoln Memorial,
White House, Capitol and the
Presidential Memorial. The next
day we visited the Smithsonian
National Air and Space
Museum. Then we took a
flight to Orlando. Before we could actually
start our educational two day journey we
went to refresh ourselves. We went to Cocoa
Beach which was a very beautiful beach and
we really enjoyed and we all had great fun
over there. There after we went to Kennedy
Space Centre (KSC). After being divided into
groups we enjoyed and experienced different
types of activities and micro gravity. It was an
enthralling experience. We then made paper
rockets and then the educators at NASA also
explained us about zero gravity and we also
enjoyed various rides. The next day of KSC
we went on a bus tour, we got to see the
launch pad sites, the vehicular assembly
building and other important sites within the
centre. The highlight of the day was lunch
with an astronaut and this is how our NASA
tour came to an end and everybody really
enjoyed these two days of knowledge and as
this was once in a lifetime opportunity.
I would also love to record the time spent
in the hotel room with my roommates. I will
never forget cooking maggi in the middle of
night, at times shedding tears when I missed
my mother and I also remember how on my
shopping trip I forgot about the time in India
and disturbed my mother in middle of the
night just to tell her about the small gifts I
bought for my siblings. I will also remember
how the teacher used to catch us in the
middle of night for not sleeping. I really miss
the time when my friends were just a room
away and how I spent most of the night chit-
chatting with them, surfing the net, making
programmes for the next day, painting our
nails and selecting clothes for the next day.
OH! How I miss those days.
On the third day in Orlando we visited the
most adventurous and fun-filled location.
Being in the Universal studios was like being
on an island of unlimited adventure. We went
to many rides and theme parks. The first ride
was an incredible hulk roller coaster. It
spiraled us around in a speed of nearly 105
km /hr. We also went to see the stimulator of
Spiderman which was amazing. Then we
went to the water rides and we got drenched,
but thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The next
theme park we went was Harry Potter’s
forbidden journey ride. It was as if we were in
the magical Harry Potter world. After all these
wonderful moments we went to another
adventurous ride called The Horror Roller
Coaster. It was the most terrifying but the
most amazing ride at the Universal Studios.
Nobody in our group felt like leaving this
adventure filled experience. Those who
missed out on some of the rides definitely
have a reason to come back and those who
did not miss anything , we are pretty sure we
will be BACK for more fun and adventure.
Disneyland – the Magical world of Mickey
Mouse is a dream of every child to be a part of
it. As we entered the magical kingdom we
could actually feel the presence of Disney
World. I was mesmerized by the Disney parade.
NEW YORK is the city of skyscrapers and it
is also called the city which never sleeps and
indeed it is a city which never sleeps and we
feel extremely lucky to have got a chance to
visit one of the most amazing cities. In New
York we visited The Empire State Building–
the tallest building in Manhattan. It had the
most amazing overview especially from the
86th floor. We also visited The Statue of Liberty
which was on Liberty Island. Time Square is
the most happening part of New York city. It
is full of colour and activity.
I would like to thank our school and the
school management for organizing the
trip and parents for sponsoring us and
our journey mentor Miss Arandita for
taking good care of us and ensured
that we were all very comfortable at
all times. All through the journey Miss
Arandita was very supportive and her
way of describing the places of tourist
interest was superb as she made her
description very lively and vivid.
Those eleven days, the people, the

T
he children spent time at the Kennedy
Space Station. The authorities arranged
for a two day long ‘Graduation Camp’
post completion of which the students
were awarded acknowledgement certificates.
The camp included the experience of Motion
Simulator which explained the un stability in
space followed by a rocket making
competition. Students were given an
opportunity to carry out a mission to launch
Apollo11. The students were told about the
hard life of Astronauts in space. The students
also enjoyed a 3 dimensional motion picture
describing the launching of spacecraft Apollo
11 to the moon. This show was screened at
the Astronaut's Hall of Fame and the student’s
were also given an opportunity to meet and
have lunch with Astronaut Jim Riley, who
answered all the questions put to him. Who
gets a chance like that to meet an astronaut
and actually get to talk to him? And who gets
a chance to get the training experience that
the astronauts get? Visiting NASA is a once in
a lifetime experience. Not every civilian can
go to the NASA and do that, it was an
opportunity for the students and teachers
which they will never forget in their life.
Apart from NASA, the students enjoyed
the History of United States of America in
Washington DC where they visited the
Capitol Hill and the Washington Monument,
At Disneyworld
Rides and more which students of MRIS enjoyed
the tallest tower in Washington DC. The
White House was a must visit for the school
which was followed by the tour of the
Lincoln Memorial.
The students cherished their stay at
Washington DC and went off to Orlando
where the first visit was to Disneyland
Hollywood Studios, the place where all age
groups enjoy rides. The rides which were
enjoyed the most was the Rock 'n' Roll
Rollercoaster that thrilled the students with
speed and visual effects and the Tower of
Terror the ride that terrifies.....
The Universal Studios was the next target
destination of fun and thrill. This place has all
kinds of rides related to Hollywood! The
Wizarding World of Harry Potter was the hub
for the Harry Potter fans. Not to leave alone
the water rides, Splash that thrilled the kids
with the ups and downs of water and Popeye
& Bluto's Bilge Rat- Barges, the most
thrilling water rafting ride anyone could be
on. For the rollercoaster freaks there was a
huge rollercoaster, The Incredible Hulk
Coaster which turned, twisted, swirled and
shook up the students. The Universal Studios
lane was full of Hollywood characters like
Spiderman, Hulk, Mickey and Minnie Mouse
and not to forget, the Disney Fairytale
Princesses. It was an experience one could
never forget.
The next stop was New York, The Big
Apple and the city that never sleeps. This
place tempts people to stop and shop. The
beauty of NY lies within the skyscrapers that
go beyond the clouds. One such Beautiful
skyscraper the students visited was the Empire
State Building, where the students went up to
the 86th floor in an elevator which took
minimum eight seconds to get to the top
where they enjoyed the wonderful view with
the heavy clean wind. The students also
visited the Ground Zero which is the World
Trade Center Site followed by a visit to Times
Square, the crossroad of the world, it is the
busiest pedestrian intersection in the world
which was lit up beautifully, it is the heart of
New York, endless life roaming in the streets
of Times Square in all times of day and night,
surrounded by endless shops. New York is a
place where one could shop till they drop.
The Statue of Liberty is a visit which could
never be forgotten. Statue of Liberty, the
symbol of freedom and independence, was a
gift to America by the French who bears a
torch symbolizing enlightenment and a tablet
that represents the Declaration of
Independence of USA, July 4, 1776. Students
caught a cruise which led them to see the
Statue of Liberty; the cruise gave an amazing
view of the skyline of New York.

I am Apoorva Garg of MRIS 14. My trip to the USA was a
fabulous experience with teachers and friends I had loads of fun. The
first destination was Washington DC where we saw the Lincoln
memorial and the White House. The next place was Orlando where
the NASA experience was awesome. We got to learn many new
things and explore the space in Nasa. And how can we forget the
universal studios and Disneyland!
I, Nandita Mangla of class 10 of MRIS-14 Faridabad was very
excited to go but when the day approached I got very nervous. But
when I met my friends and teachers I felt very relieved. Our main
focus to USA was the Astronaut training for children at Kennedy
space center. We entered a world of space and had an enriching
learning experience beside having lunch with an Astronaut ,asked
him many questions . Our best day was in Universal studios , we did
so many rides like hulk, spider man , fear fall etc. the best ride was
the Harry Potter ride , every one enjoyed it a lot. We also saw The
Statue of liberty. I met my relatives there who live in New Jersy ,
spent time with them . I wish I could go there again …
e, the students of MRIS Charmwoodl assembled at the
night of 12th May, 2013 at school from where we then
drove to the airport by bus. Our first stop once we
boarded the aircraft was at the magnificient and grand
airport of Dubai where we did a lot of shopping. Then we flew to
Washington D.C. where we did a city tour. We saw Capitol Hill,
Washington monument, Lincoln memorial, White House and the
cherry blossom trees which china had gifted to USA as a token of
peace. The weather at D.C. was quite moist and it was slightly raining.
The next day we saw the Smithsonian air and space museum. It was
very big and had many kinds of planes in it..
Then we flew to Orlando . Disneyland. was a very interesting place
with many fun rides to try. There we saw many Disney characters like
Lilo and Stitch or Minnie and Mickey mouse. The next day we went
to NASA for our SATX training. It was a lot of fun in the rotator
where they rotated us at 360 degree for about 3 minutes or so. Then
we went for the spinning wheel where we sat in a seat and they
revolved us around a ball and we had to throw a ball or Frisbee at the
person on the other end of the wheel. Then we went in to an actual
control room and we even did a mock launch with a rocket we made
out of paper. The next day we went to NASA visitor’s centre where
we saw many real artifacts and models of rockets and shuttles. We
learnt about many types of problems that astronauts faced and then
how they were solved. We also learnt about many tragedies and how
the astronauts died in them. It was a very sad thing to hear. Then we
went on to have lunch with an astronaut. We asked him a lot of
questions and he answered them with quite enthusiasm. We caught
our flight and left for New York. We went for our city tour which was
quite interesting. We saw the Empire State building which was a very
tall building. Now in place of ground zero two fountains are going to
be made in honor of the two towers which had crashed. We also saw
the Statue of Liberty through a ferry ride. It was very beautiful. Each
and every experience teaches a child life skills like adjusting, politeness,
punctuality, and also to have lots of fun. This experience is a grand
privilege and I shall cherish it forever.
Trip to NASA with 32 students and three of my colleague was
truly incredible . Our visit to Kennedy Space Centre was not only
very informative but also absolutely mesmerizing, to be able to see
space shuttles like Atlantis and Apollo and having lunch with an
astronaut were truly overwhelming moments. Disney Land ,
Universal Studios , Time square , Statue of Liberty , Empire State
building , were other places of interest we visited. I would like to
thank the school management for organizing such a wonderful trip.

Nothing Is
Impossible In This World
“T
he word impossible doesn’t exist in
human dictionary” is not an
exaggerated saying. It is based on
the result shown by human endeavour.
Winners always focus on mastering the
ability to accomplish. Once we conceive an idea
and back it up with strong belief, we can
definitely succeed. The term ‘Impossible’ itself
comprises the word ‘I’ ‘M’ ‘Possible’, which
implies nothing is here in this world that is not
possible. Impossible is considered as an opinion
rather than the fact. It can be used in the
temporary sense as it is nothing permanent.
Every person who strongly believes
that anything is possible and can be achieved, is
indeed inwardly optimistic who never allows,
failures to come. There are numerous examples
from the lives of common people which enhance
the vision of possibility. Louis Braille was a blind
educationist who devised the touch system of
reading and writing for the blind. Helen Keller
was both blind and deaf, but became an educator
of the blind.
How the degree of possibility could be
raised to such an extent and lead to a great
success which was completely impossible at the
very beginning of their life? It is nothing but
their willpower, determination and confidence in
achieving their goal. We are only making our
destiny, shaping our life and deciding our fate.
God has bestowed enormous powers and
qualities on human beings. Man is the supreme
of all his creations.
Every body is free to dream. But
dreams should not remain In our heads. These
should become a reality; otherwise they continue
to live at the back of the mind forever trapped in
the midst of our thoughts. But how can one aim
at fulfilling one’s dreams whose journey has been
full of obstacles and failure? Obviously one will
be frustrated with impossibility. But here one

should remember that failure is the pillar of
success. Some may experience passing through a
smooth paved road as they move towards their
goal. On the other had, for others, the road may
be quite a bumpy one, with frequent stops,
missed exists and road blocks.
Circumstances may be adverse but it
should not deter us. Carlyle said that genius is
another name for the capability to take infinite
pains. History of human civilization tells us about
many such great leaders and their efforts which
were beyond imagination. It is nothing but the
willpower and the indomitable determination of
a person which makes impossible possible. The
story of man’s progress from barbarism to
civilization is nothing but a story of his
dedication pitted against all hostile forces of
nature, which can be achieved by anyone through
continuous process of concentration on noble
objectives.
Today, man has landed on the moon
which was believed to be a god. With the
advancements in modern science and technology
and the conviction of man, the posterity will be
witness to how many inhabits the moon and
procreates the human race there.
Swami Vivekananda said the ‘karma can
directly lead one to supreme goal’. Dedication
towards work is what makes the journey of life a
meaningful endeavour. According to Sophocoles,
‘Heaven will never help the man who will not
act’. There is nothing impossible in this
technologically advanced world if the efforts are
on. The most important formula to make
impossible possible, undesirable desirable, failure
success, fruitless fruitful, is by using the word
‘right’. By taking the right decision at the right
time at the right place in the right direction, we
can reach the right destination.

ZENITH OF
SCIENCE
From the fall of night,
to the rise of day;
Science is the only thought
That makes me say
I'll be a Scientist one day!
Though I know my thoughts do sway.
but it's for sure the theory of pendulum
motion,
that foundations to it lay!
For a matter of time science fills me with
anticipation,
the next moment it deprives me of oxygen..
.and feel like rushin' to the nearest station.
Be it anyway it's indeed my passion,
although Mom believes it's mere my
imagination.
None on earth discovers my endeavour for
creation,
the impulse that I get on hearin' "Invention"!
Sir. Einstien really got me amazed,
at times when with anger my zeros I gazed..
but now me is content,
on knowin' the fact, thrice to suspension he
too was intent!
Neurons, Theories and moles
rushes through my veins,
but the sight of those tonnes of books,
irresistibly my mind do strains!
Ouch! and my senses quivered with a slam,
with those tonnes of books right o'er my head
,BAM!
I had been on my study desk since hours,
learning laws of relativity....which not my brain
registered as yet,
me now full of woes!
The time had flung,
my neat, "blank" notebook still to my hand
clung,
The dusk had now arrived...
..."next will be dawn!",I cried
then with a hope i smiled,
and Up my desk I winded.
Existence of science overshadows the eternity
of universe,
"tonnes" of books are indeed subject to
decay;
what outshines is the desire that makes me
say,
from the fall of night, to the rise of day...

ction embodied in one’s effort is the real key to success and
happiness. There is no success and resultant happiness without
action. You can derive satisfaction and happiness in having
done your best even though the result did not turn out to be
as expected or desired. That is why it is said in the Gita ‘Do your duty,
unmindful of the results’.
No one can expect a very easy life and also a very successful one at
the same time. The rewards one gets in life are usually commensurate
with the efforts one puts in. It is astonishing what intelligent effort can
accomplish when channelised in the right direction. Success is not easy:
If it was, everyone would be successful. However, the success ladder is
not as difficult to climb as it might seem. Each time we overcome an
obstacle or solve a problem, the task we are attempting becomes easier,
till finally what once looked impossible becomes routine. Countless
efforts by themselves, despite countless falls, imply the power to rise.
When we are at the bottom of the ladder, the top seems inaccessible
and the obstacle at the top, insuperable. But they are not. The early
conquests are the toughest. The more you succeed, the easier it
becomes to do so, till eventually success grows into a habit. Thus,
success follows success. Nothing is impossible for a man with a purpose
and a determination to persist with it. The world stands aside to let pass
the man who knows where he is going and steps put with confidence,
courage and determination.
One of the ingredients that makes for success is hard work. But if
you like and love your work, you will never find it hard, tiring or
boring, no matter how long you happen to be at it. Any knowledge
you may acquire or any skill you may develop, will be the result of
consistent effort. Of course, hard work is not the soul or only
ingredient in the recipe for success. There should be a purpose to all
work, and a worthy goal at which to aim and advance. Never venture,
never win, no risk, no gain. Fortune favours the brave. In life, we have
to take bold decisions and take them quickly and thoughtfully.
One more ‘mantra’ for success in life is : never be dogmatic and stick
and stick to a career linked to your academic attainments alone, if you
feel there are greener pastures for youto exploit you talent to your
fullest advantage.
Loo, scores of doctors, engineers and etc., going in for the coveted
civil services with remarkable success; with some of them even going
for the art subjects. The same hold true in the case of the young
badminton sensation ‘saina nehwal’. Though only 18 years old, she had
earned the title of ‘The most Promising Player’. She has an endless list
of achievements and now her name has been included in the top 10
women badminton players of the world. Her determination has given
her the success, she enjoys today.
If she can achieve all this, then why can’t you?

he most invaluable relationship created by God is that of a
mother and a child. It is said that God created mothers
since He could not be present everywhere. Mother's Day
was celebrated at MRIS 21C with lot of zeal and enthusiasm.
The mothers of Bloomz and Toddlers were invited to school to
spend time with their children at school and also be a part of
the various activities conducted specially for them on the
occasion of Mother's Day. The mothers were welcomed by their
children with flowers. The mothers participated with whole
hearted enthusiasm and excitement in the activities which
included art and craft, music and dance, and games. There was a
riot of Yellow colour due to the ‘Thematic Dressing Up for
Mom and Baby’, the Theme for which was ‘Summer’ and the
Colour was ‘Yellow’. It was a delight to see the mothers and the
children dressed up according to the theme and the colour.
There was also a Cookery Art Display for which the mothers
brought dishes prepared by them under three categories –
Healthy Sandwiches, Cakes & Puddings, and Salads. It was
heartening to see how much effort had been put into each dish
on display. Ms. Gurjeet Kaur Chawla (Asst. Prof. and HOD for
The Department of Nutrition and Dietics) was invited to judge
the Cookery Art Display along with Principal Ms. Ikwinder S.
Singh. They along with Ms. Nandini A Pillai (Early Years
Coordinator) gave away the prizes to the mothers with the
winning entries. This celebration was an attempt to make the
Mother’s Day special by giving the mothers a chance to visit the
school and their children during working hours, and be a part
of activities at school, and also to strengthen the bond between
the parents and the school, which is essential for the holistic
development of the children. All in all it was a day full of fun
and excitement not only for the children and their mothers but
also for the teachers.
tudents of Kindergarten at MRIS-21C enjoyed the Splash Pool
Activity held for them, in the last week before the summer
break, to the fullest. They looked really lovely wearing their
swimming costumes, swimming caps and goggles. Students danced to
the tune of foot tapping numbers while splashing water at each other.
Mrs. Ikwinder S. Singh, our esteemed Principal Ma’am came and
joined the kids. The children thoroughly enjoyed with her. They were
happy and the cooling effect made them feel fresh and hungry. It was
difficult to convince them to come out of the splash pool as they were
enjoying themselves thoroughly. It was fun watching them beat the

May 2013.
The students of KG presented what they
had learnt about Ancient Egypt in Unit 1 of
Paragon. The Assembly commenced on an
auspicious note with the chanting of the
Gayatri Mantra, after which the students
informed the parents what they had learnt in
the various centers (such as Literacy – English
and Hindi, Numeracy, GES) so far, followed
by an introduction to Paragon and Paragon
Friends – Nora and Charlie. The parents were
amazed to see the creations of the children
throughout the Unit, which were displayed all
around the classroom. The children were
smartly dressed-up in Egyptian Collars, Belts
and Rhythm bracelets that the children had
made themselves. The children explained to
the parents the Essential Question ‘Who am I’
and all that they had discovered about
themselves through the Unit. They also
informed the parents about Ancient Egyptians
- what they wore, what they ate, where they
lived, etc.; they also talked about the river

shelter and water which led them to answer
their essential question, ‘What do people
need?’
The students of Grade II explored the lives
of Mesopotamians – their homes, food,
writing and beliefs in their Paragon journey.
Whereas, the students of Grade – III
showcased the Ancient Indus Valley
Civilization and historical India through their
depiction of ten elements of culture, how they
took shape in these places and how they apply
to our world today.
The students of Grade IV showcased their
journey through the land of Egypt. They had
made life size mummies, presented their
culture and beliefs, and daily life and routine.
The parents were amazed to see the
information and data collected by their
wards and the manner in which it was
presented.
The students of Grade V beautifully
presented ‘How do we Unlock the
Mysteries of a Civilization’. They had
learned to investigate the methods
adopted by archaeologists to decode
the mysteries of ancient Egypt. The
students had created a virtual Egyptian

A FRIEND IN NEED
IS A FRIEND INDEED
L
ord Krishna and Sudama’s
friendship is a classic example
of genuine friendship. Joy and
Sorrow, Success and Failure, Good
Fortune and Misfortune, are shared
equally by both the friends. A
friend in need is a friend indeed.
One who stands by one’s friends
during times of adversity is a true
friend. Selfless love is the very base
of true friendship, let us see how…
A selfish friend is rich in words and poor in deeds, i.e. he is a
hypocrite. He talks tall but when you are in trouble, he leaves
you in the lurch.
In biology, there is a term given to animals that live
together in which one of the animals benefits from the other
without affecting the other, this is known as commensalism,
there is also parasitism where one benefits and the other is
harmed. A selfish friend is always after grinding his own axe;
he does not care about your welfare at all .Therefore, a selfish
friend is at the very least commensals if not parasitic.
True friendship involves self-sacrifice mutually. A true friend
foregoes pleasure and convenience. He goes out of his way
and faces difficulties in his way with joy and even with pride,
indeed, a true friend will not feel burdened at the notion of
helping you out, and instead, they will have a feeling of elation
that screams out “Yes! I was able to be of help to my dear
friend!” True friends shoulder the burden of life equally for
they feel that they sail in the same boat and that if the boat is
to sink they have to swim together.
A friend in need is the medicine of life. He stands
by us through thick and thin, in joy and sorrow. He seeks to
inspire us and bring us great joy. He is always loyal and
faithful. He is never a victim of misunderstanding. A friend in
need is a true guide; he will guide us skillfully through the
wooly maze that is life and will help us decipher out goal,
something we cannot do alone.
Flattery and being a yes-man are not virtues that
belong to a true friend, they are open and plain. A true friend
will openly tell his friend that they have gone on the wrong
path and strive to bring them back to the path of
righteousness.
However, in today’s world of horror, a true friend is
rare. Indeed, Lucky is the man who has a true friend-a friend
in need.3ws

University and the country in International
Seminar held on 28th May 2013 where she
presented her research work before scientists
of different universities at Finland. She won
appreciation for her work and admiration of
her colleagues at Lahti University. Read about
her experiences in Finland:
The main objective of my master’s thesis
was “Enhancement of biomass and lipid
production of microalgae in mixed populations
in waste water” which I carried out in Lahti
University of Applied Sciences (LUAS), Finland
from January 2013 to May 2013.
This Master’s thesis assesses the potential
of microalgae for waste water purification and
biodiesel production in single and mixed
populations. The wastewater used in these
experiments was pressed from mixture of new
municipal organic waste and partly composted
garden waste. The species that have been
chosen for growth during the experiments are
Euglena gracilis, Selenastrum sp. and Chlorella
pyrenoidosa and their various combinations.
The experiments have been carried out at labscale and photobioreactors. Samples were
taken on a regular interval (3 times a week)
for determination of growth (DW), growth rate
and nutrient consumption. Microscopy was
used for calculation of cell concentrations
(cells mL-1) in the end of the cultivation.
The experiments show suitability of the
single and mixed populations of strains to the
wastewater in the laboratory scale and reactor
scale. Results showed that biomass yield in the
mixed cultures was mainly lower than pure
cultures but there was enhancement in lipid
production when E.gracilis and Selenastrum
were cultured together. However results
indicate that cultivation in mixed populations
can reach higher lipid production but fatty acid
profile of E.gracilis is not optimal for biodiesel
applications.
The working culture in Finland is one of
the most precise and effective working
method, I believe. They plan their work in such
a way that they don’t have to compromise
with their time for family. There, people work
in absolute details for every task and come up
with new and innovative ideas. They believe
that even a small idea can be worth a try. The
resources in the labs were unlimited and they
trusted me with their expensive instruments.
The labs were very well maintained and all the
researchers took special care about the
cleanliness of the labs. An internal lab meeting
was conducted every Friday where the
researchers put their issues to the
administrator and they were solved by next
week. The "Finns" are the most smiling and
warm people I have ever seen. They are always
willing to help others in every way possible.
Fortunately, I was amidst people who accepted
me as a part of their culture and society and
introduced me to various aspects of Finnish
culture. My supervisor, Dr. Silja Kostia, invited
me to meet her family and also was kind
enough to teach me how to ski! My
immediate supervisor, Ms Marika Tikka, also
helped me a lot at both professional and
personal fronts.
Lahti is a beautiful city by a lake and has
a small population. It was really interesting to
see people thanking the bus driver while
moving out of the bus! The Europeans have an
impeccable sense of timing and punctuality.
Also, I have learnt to value people from every
section of the society. Socially, I believe I have
grown as an individual tremendously.

KNOW YOUR TRUE SELF
What lies behind you and what lies in front
of you, pales in comparison to what lies
inside of you.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Ever since we breathed our first on this
planet, we have been focusing on knowing
nuances of the outside world. But little do we
know that more important than that, is to
know OUR true selves. We need to connect
with our own self before connecting with
others around us, because if we are not
comfortable and at peace with ourselves, we
cannot be comfortable and with peace with
anyone around us.
Instead of asking others about what field we
should choose for ourselves, we should listen to
our conscience, analyse our strengths and
weaknesses and then set targets for ourselves.
The following example might be clichéd, but
its authenticity cannot be argued. Dhirubhai
Ambani was a gas station attendant. Later, he
went on to found one of the major companies
of India. It was believed that excellence only
came with experience
Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar was 16 when he
entered the International cricket arena and
hypnotized everyone with what he could do
with the cricket bat. He single handedly rocked
Indian cricket.
A farmer’s son, Bill Gates, was a school
dropout. His passion led him to form
Microsoft, which was the first company to
bring the ‘computer’ to common people
like us.
Even Albert Einstein, whose name is now
synonymous with ‘genius’, was a mediocre
student at school, constantly rebuked by his
teachers. Little did they know about his
intellect. He went on to change the way we
look at Physics, giving us the Special and
General Theories of relativity among other
equally remarkable findings.
All of these people are considered successful
by us. But what makes them so special?
They had one thing in common. They
pursued their passion. Their journey wasn’t,
obviously, a cakewalk but nevertheless they
achieved what they wanted. They listened to
the little voice inside their head and did not let
the dreams get clouded by what other people
had to say. They were never bogged down by
others’ criticism and had a clear idea of their
goal and were determined to achieve it.
Nowadays we worry about the cut-throat
competition for getting admissions in colleges
of our choice and even the jobs we wish for. Is
our worry justified? When we don our
optimistic glasses, we see that there are a vast
number of opportunities coming up in every
sphere.

Be it the IT industry, the medical line, sports,

We should not just jump into the

If we choose to do something we love, then

While setting our goals we should make sure
that we are pursuing something which we are

We should live our own life and not a

o be very honest, it was my belief in
myself which got me through. There
were times when I was down, really.
But my wonderful teachers and
friends helped me get myself together.
A big thanks to all my teachers, especially
my Principal, Ms. Sanyogita Sharma, who
helped me at every step, be it their expertise in
their subjects or their wise words. And of
course, my mother. For those endless mugs of
coffee when I used to pull off all-nights during
the examinations and for staying by my side
during the ups and the downs.
Just before the exam days, one of my cousins
suggested me this movie called Rocky. It stars
Sylvester Stallone. He plays Rocky Balboa, who's
a small time boxer and is considered a 'bum', a
nobody by his friends and other people. That does
not deter him from dreaming big. He works really
hard, faces all adversities with courage ,stands up on
his own feet, and is ultimately crowned the world
champion. His strong will gets him through. It gave
me strength to work hard and inspired me to put in all
my efforts into my studies. So, Rocky Balboa was my
inspiration!
What I personally feel is that the number of hours put
into studies does not decide how well one scores. What I
mean is that even if I studied for just three hours in a day,
I made sure that I gave my hundred percent to what I was
doing and did not give in to distractions such as my
cellphone, television or even a tempting novel!
Do not get bogged down by what others say or think
about you. Just believe in yourself. You are the best. Work

Well, the next battle I have in front of me are the Class

W
ith students away for summer break, it is the most ideal time for teachers to
refresh their own learning and rejuvenate the scholar within. Hence, the
month of May was earmarked with a couple of workshops for the staff
members, organized at Manav Rachna International school, Sector 46, Gurgaon.
The three day work shop ‘Dance in Education’ was conducted by ‘Project Meraki’
from 20th _ 22nd May ’13 for Toddlers to Grade 2.The workshop was indeed a
comprehensive exercise which made the teachers understand, that how movement, dance
and rhythm can be incorporated in classrooms to benefit children. If used well, it can be a
great tool for teachers to use it for students who have learning difficulties or have a dislike
for a subject. The workshop emphasized on stress relieving activities and the importance
of correct posture.
A two day self –defence workshop for the staff members was organized in the wake of
recent increase in crime rate against women. Mr Mihir Mondal the Taekwondo instructor
of our school facilitated the workshop. We were given hands on experience on various
techniques which can be used against the assaulter . Stress was laid upon the fact that
defending oneself requires confidence and presence of mind more than physical strength.
‘Inclusive Education ‘the most imperative requirement of the existing time was conducted
by the team of special educators of our school. It helped the teachers to understand how a
child can be identified through various symptoms and at the same time giving enough time
to the observations made by the teachers before coming to a conclusion. Sensitivity and
empathy plays a vital role in dealing with a child with probable special needs.
Micro teaching was conducted by various subject teachers to share best practices adopted
in the class rooms. Workshops on Vedic Maths, Cybernetics and Edu-Comp were too
attended by the teachers.
The school intends to train its teachers well enough to enable them to impart their
learning with students which is an amalgamation of technology and personal touch with
complete preparedness and fervor.

BIOTECHNOLOGY : THE RESEARCH ORIENTED DEPARTMENT AT MRIU
xcellence in scientific and technical education can be achieved only
through research, implemented in its true meaning. The Department
of Biotechnology at FET, MRIU, has always shown true spirit of
exploration and innovation. Ever since its inception in the year 2002,
research has been pursued as a culture by the faculty and students which is
evident by numerous publications in referred journals, collaborative
projects, academia-industry partnership and foreign university research
collaborations.
Basic research is essential on all aspects of modern biology. This includes
development of the tools to identify, isolate, and manipulate individual
genes that govern the specific characters in plants, animals, and
microorganisms. This is further employed in applied research involving the
utilization of genetic manipulations for production of desirable products
and processes. Our graduation and post graduation courses are
complemented by an essential component of basic and applied research
incorporated in their curriculum. This inculcates the aptitude of creativity,
innovation and scientific temperaments in students to give rise to the basic
curiosity-driven research.
We are on the path of attaining expertise in practically all areas of
biotechnology. Advanced research work in biotechnology is being done in
the areas of Plant Biotechnology, Environment Biotechnology,
Bioinformatics, Microbiology, Enzyme Biotechnology and Fermentation
Technology. In order to keep pace with the global advancements in
Biotechnology which often imply cutting-edge research, we have state of
art laboratories, well equipped and completely dedicated to research. The
E
research facilities are meant to support the students, research scholars and
highly experienced doctorate faculty constantly involved in biotechnology
research. We have research collaborations with foreign universities paving
way for knowledge exchange and technology transfer, giving thrust to our
biotechnology research.
There is huge relevance of research approaches supporting sustainable
development and at the same time meeting the technological requirements
of industry, both equally required for the growth of country. Our constant
endeavors towards such applied research are certainly meaningful and
contributory to this purpose. In this context, the research and development
project on high nutritional quality mushroom cultivation and development
of new biofertilizers and biopesticides are mentionable. Environment
Biotechnology, Agriculture, Food Biotechnology and Bio control are the
areas of thrust. Research on plant stress biology and plant tissue culture
which constructs the base of sustainable agriculture is also included in our
continuous research process. Industry associations keep us informed of the
current technology requirements and subsequently industrial projects help
us to keep pace with the industrial temperament
‘Service to man, masses and environment’ is our desire and goal’. The
Department of Biotechnology at FET, Manav Rachna International

RESEARCH STUDIES BY DEPARTMENT OF NUTRITION
AND DIETETICS, FACULTY OF APPLIED SCIENCE (MRIU)
NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL SWEETNERS
sugar substitute is a food additive that duplicates the effect of sugar
in taste. Now a day’s consumption of sweeteners has become a
routine among people. Everyone is using them without proper
knowledge and guidance. A study was conducted by Department of
Nutrition and Dietetics, faculty of Applied Science on awareness and
availability of natural and artificial sweeteners and its effect on health in
Faridabad district. Purposive random sampling was done and 100 subjects
were selected those were consuming sweeteners. The age group selected
for the sampling was 20 years and above. A detailed questionnaire was
filled and Market survey was done to find out the availability of natural
and artificial sweeteners in the market. It was found that availability of
natural sweeteners was very less than the artificial sweeteners. Natural
sweeteners were not easily available in local markets. Non availability of
natural sweeteners was one of the reasons for the consumption of artificial
sweeteners by the consumers. Out of 100 samples 91% samples were
consuming artificial sweeteners and only 7% were consuming natural
sweeteners.Various reasons of consumption were found to be diabetes,
figure consciousness, weight management and for a healthy lifestyle. More
so people belonging to high income group were consuming more
artificially sweetened products like diet cold drinks, sugar free sweets,
cakes, pastries etc, p<0.05 (40.57).Also values of association between
A
frequency of consumption of sweeteners and health effects was also
statistically significant at p<0.05, (12.20) which shows that people
consuming more sweeteners were facing health problems like headache,
diarrhea, indigestion etc.
The same research was presented at 4th Herbal International,

port can be exciting, challenging and rewarding. However, the
legacy of sport is severely damaged, and the integrity of athletes is

intrinsically valuable about sport. This intrinsic value is often referred to as
"the spirit of sport", and is characterized by the values such as ethics, fair
