The fishing
Once outside the protective coral reef of the Turtle Bay mooring, you will experience some of the most prolific
game fishing waters in the world. Black, Blue and Striped Marlin, Broadbill Swordfish, Sailfish and the occasional
Shortbill Spearfish comprise the targeted Billfish species. Yellowfin Tuna, King Mackerel (Couta), Ignoblis Kingfish
(Karambesi), Wahoo, Dorado, Baracuda, Amberjack, Tropical Yellowtail, Rainbow Runner, and a number of Bonito
species and other baitfish abound throughout the year.
For those who would like to test the depths, there is also an incredible array of resident reef fish comprising
various Snapper, Rock Cod and Grouper. In order to protect our valuable marine resource, we discourage any over
exploitation and ask guests to please limit their catch.
There are also numerous Shark species around headed by the mighty Tiger Shark. These are often over 1000lbs
and provide a real challenge for the strong and the brave who wish to target those species.
CLUB 15 BILL AND GAME FISHING, WATAMU, KENYA
Out at sea one can experience close encounters with Whales, Whale Sharks, Manta Rays, Turtles, Flying Fish and
Dolphins and a range of Sea Birds.
Tag and Release
Kenya has experienced the most fantastic billfishing over the last number of years with Fantasy Slams (5 species
of billfish), Super Slams (4 species) and Grand Slams (3 species) caught on one day becoming a regular
occurrence.
We fully support Tag and Release and we encourage you to assist us in ensuring the sustainability of
our fishery by releasing all Billfish, GT’s and Amberjack.
Tackle and techniques
There are 30 ,50 and 80lb matched Shimano outfits supplied on the boat for trolling lures, we do not supply any
terminal tackle, so you will need to bring along your own lures, Sampo swivels, leaders etc. Please contact us for a
comprehensive suggested tackle list.
The main fishing methods employed encompass the following – Live baiting, trolling Hard and soft head cona type
lures (with or without strip bait), trolling bibbed lures (Rapalas and Halcos recommended) as well as Vertical
jigging, plugging and throwing stickbaits.
The crew can also assist you if you are more of a light tackle enthusiast and we have had great success on Fly and
Dropshot in recent years.
The monsoon months of May, June and July produce strong winds, rain and unsettled seas and are therefore not
often fished, although the fish are still there and this is a great time for Yellowfin Tuna and Black marlin. The camp
is closed during this time and the boat is moved to Mida Creek for the offseason.
