POETIC/LITERARY DEVICE PROJECT
1. With your partner, choose a song with at least four literary devices (any four of the
following, can be more than one of a specific device):
alliteration; allusion; assonance; consonance; hyperbole; idiom; imagery; irony;
paradox; metaphor; oxymoron; onomatopoeia; personification; simile
2. On chart paper OR in a digital format NEATLY write down your song’s lyrics.
Underline (or write) each literary device in a different color.
3. At the very top of your chart paper/dig. presentation, write down the overall THEME
of the song.
4. Fill out the literary device sheet (attached) based on the following example:

To use the same sound over and
“As the winter winds litter
over again
London with lonely hearts…”
The repetition of the “w” sound focuses on the words “winter” and
“wind” which connotes a cold, desolate setting.
The repetition of the “L” sound focuses on the word “litter,” which
connotes something being thrown away; and “London” and
“lonely” bring not only the city of London to mind, but also a
sense of isolation, a sadness.
5. You and your partner will be teaching the literary devices contained in your song to
the class. The point of this assignment is that YOU understand how the literary devices
are used to create and enhance the meaning of the song, and then you tell US how it
all works.
You will be graded as follows:




Neatness and presentation of lyrics: 25 pts
Accuracy in identifying four different literary devices (handout): 25 pts
Creativity and accuracy in teaching the class: 25 pts
Overall effort and collaborative effort: 25 pts
THIS IS A 100 point project grade. You will present FIRST THING Tuesday, whether your
partner is here or not. Be creative and take this seriously. If you need me to make any
copies for your presentation, let me know by the end of class Monday.
