La Commedia dell’arte had its start in the second half of the 16th century.
Commedia bases its charm on improvisation. Improvisation in the sense that
is not written, but of course it follows very precise rules: each piece is based
on a specific scenario, each is performed by a distinct group of actors portraying masked stereotypes, and each uses popular themes, complex stories
with lots of climax, acrobatic jumps and romantic love scenes.
The Red Hat
The Red Hat is a comical portrayal of the search for love. Each character
struggles to manage the inevitable fear of their impending future, and the
play is both relatable and entertaining.

Originals, Covers, & Remixes
Music choices and choreography created by the dancers under the
direction of Georgia Ortega. Lighting design by DiAnn Montemayor.
Our process: From student submissions, each dance class voted on
the arrangement of an original, cover, and/or remix. The dancers then
visualized the choreographic structure to formulate and develop the
beginning, middle, and end of the dance. They created movement
material in groups to make choices in the style and give each dancer
a voice in the collaboration. Together, they made decisions on how the
movement dynamics, spatial patterns, costumes, and props would
inform their work, and refined their movement choices.
