About the Author
William Shakespeare was born in 1564, in Stratford-on-Avon, a city in
England. His mother ’s name was Mary Arden. His father, John, was a wealthy
businessman. There is very little known about William Shakespeare’s early life. It is
believed that he attended a local grammar school where the students learned Latin, public
speaking, and religion. Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway in 1582. They had three
children, Susanna, Hamnet, and Judith. In 1584, Shakespeare left Stratford and went to
London.
By 1592, Shakespeare was a well-known actor and playwright. In 1599,
Shakespeare, along with others, opened up the Globe Theatre. In the early 1600’s,
Shakespeare’s company worked under King James I and became known as the King’s Men.
In 1608, the King’s Men acquired the Blackfriars Theatre, which became their winter
home. In 1613, the Globe was destroyed in a fire and was rebuilt a year later. However, by
that time, Shakespeare had retired from writing. Shakespeare died in his hometown of
Stratford on April 23, 1616.
Interdisciplinary Teaching Suggestions
Language Arts:
Be a Critic: Create a classroom critic’s corner. Break students up into ten groups. Allow
each group to read a chapter before the class and prepare a critique just like the movies!
Create a Diary based on Shakespeare’s Characters: Students must choose a
character from the story. After reading each chapter, students should write a diary entry
on their character’s feelings based on the events in the story.
Math:
Create a Bar Graph: What professions were available in Shakespeare’s time? What were
the average salaries paid? Create a bar graph.
Create a Pie Chart: Research the population of London and the distribution of wealth
during Shakespeare’s time. Create a pie chart.
Science:
Health Issues during Shakespeare’s Time: Create a newspaper for Shakespeare’s
London. Report on the average lifespan of men and women. In 1592 the Plague killed
15,000 people in London. Report on the cause and effect of the Plague. Report on other
health concerns for the people of the time.
Social Studies:
Compare Queens and Kings: Shakespeare wrote and performed plays for Queen
Elizabeth I and then King James I. How were the monarchies of the Queen and King
different?
General:
Create an Interdisciplinary Classroom Museum of Artifacts from Shakespeare’s
Story: Research, create, and detail the purpose and significance of each student’s artifact
in relation to the story.
Create a Classroom Bulletin Board: Break up students into small groups. Make each
group responsible for an area of the bulletin board that pertains to the story. Create a story
cluster describing literary elements from the story, for example setting, characters, and
plot.

Verona and Fighting
Romeo and Juliet lived a long
time ago. They lived in a city in
Italy called Verona. Romeo
belonged to the family called
Montague. Juliet to the family
called Capulet. Romeo was a
young man. Juliet was a young
girl. But they never grew old.
Why? Let’s find out.
We have to know about Verona
to know why. A good prince ruled
in Verona. He kept the peace.
His people had good houses to
live in. They had good food to
eat. They had good clothes to
wear. They could work and take
care of their families. It was so
because the Prince kept the
peace.
But these were mean times.
People loved only their families
and friends. With others, they
would fight over silly things.
Fighting might start over a bad
look. One man might give another man a bad look. They might
fight with swords. Sometimes
someone was killed.
In Verona, fighting was
against the law. Most people
came to love the law. When
there was no fighting, there was
peace. When there was peace,
they could live well. But the law
was not enough. Some people
just had to fight. They were used
to fighting. So, the Prince made
some men “watchers.” They
watched for fighting and told the
Prince about it. No one wanted
to be caught fighting. A man
caught fighting could be put out
of the city - out of fair Verona
and away from family and
friends. Or, the Prince might put
the man to death.
Two families in Verona did not
like each other. They were the
Montagues and the Capulets.
Their money bought friends and
servants; they were strong.
Sometimes fighting broke out
between them. Then there was
no peace in Verona. No wonder
the Prince became angry when
he heard the Montagues and the
Capulets were at it again.
Samson and Gregory, two servants of the house of Capulet,
walk in the street in Verona.
They wear swords.
“Just let the Montagues give
us trouble and they will feel our
swords,” Samson says.
Into the street, as Samson
talks, come two Montague servants.
“Do you look to fight?” Gregory
says to them.
“Fight? No, but we will not
turn from one!” the Montague
servants shout.
Without another word, both
sides take out their swords and
begin fighting.
Benvolio, a Montague, comes
into the street and sees the fighting. “Stop, stop,” he cries, and
takes out his own sword to get
between them. “You break the
law.”
Tybalt, a Capulet, is not far
behind. “What, you draw your
sword on servants?” he shouts at
Benvolio. He takes out his
sword, and now they are all
fighting.
The Prince’s watchers come.
“Stop them! Beat them down!”
they cry. “Down with the
Capulets, down with the
Montagues. They break the
peace!”
Old Capulet, the family head,
comes. “What is this? Give me
my sword!”
“What you need is a chair and
you call for a sword,” his wife
says.
Old Montague comes. His
sword is out. “Capulet, again!”
he shouts. His wife holds him
back.
Now the Prince comes.
“Mean, old men. Three times
you have broken the peace in
Verona. One more time and you
will pay with your lives. Now
leave here!”

Montague is angry. In the
street, in front of all Verona, the
Prince shouted at him because his
men were fighting with Capulet's
men. How bad was that!
“Sh! It could have been very
bad. Our Romeo could have been
fighting,” his wife says. "Have you
seen our son, Benvolio?”
Benvolio saw Romeo early this
morning. Romeo looked so troubled and sad. He turned from
Benvolio and went off alone.
“He has been this way for
days,” Montague says. “He is your
cousin, Benvolio. Listen to him,
find out what is his trouble.”
Just then, Romeo comes into
the street.
“Romeo comes! Go. I will talk
to him and find out,” Benvolio
says to Montague and his wife.
They hurry off.
“Romeo, you are so sad. What
troubles you?” Benvolio asks.
Romeo tells him. He is very
much in love. But the lady does
not love back. She will not have
him. He can think of nothing else.
He is love-sick. He will not say
who the lady is that makes him
this way.
“I will help you. Begin this
way: do not think of her,”
Benvolio tells him.
“O teach me how I should not
think,” Romeo cries.
“The beautiful ones are everywhere. Come along,” Benvolio
says. “I will teach you.”

At Capulet’s house, Paris, a
young cousin of the Prince, visits.
Capulet has a beautiful daughter.
Juliet is her name. Paris wishes
to talk to her of love and someday
marry her.
Capulet listens. He tells Paris
that Juliet is not yet fourteen.
Paris must wait two years. In
that time, he tells Paris, he should
see more of Juliet. He should get
to know her -- make her love him.
If that happens, Capulet says he
will let Juliet marry.
Now it can begin. Capulet is
giving a party this very night.
Juliet will be there. Paris is asked
to come. Here is a chance for him
with Juliet, Capulet tells him.
Capulet gives Peter, a servant,
a paper with names on it. These
are the people he wants to come to
the party. Peter is to go out into
the city and ask them to come.
But Peter cannot read. As he
walks, he sees Romeo and
Benvolio. He asks Romeo to read
the names for him. Romeo reads,
and Peter puts the names into his
head. Romeo asks who is giving
the party.
“Capulet. If you are not of the
house of Montague, come early
and join us, sir, for the help you
give me,” Peter says, and hurries
away.
Beautiful Rosaline is coming.
Now Benvolio knows. It is she
Romeo loves. The way Romeo
says her name tells him so.
“We must go to this party,”
Benvolio cries. “I will show you
ladies who will make you not
think of Rosaline.”
“One fairer than the sun. No,”
Romeo sighs. “But I will go.”
Romeo talks about love. Paris
talks about love and marrying. In
Juliet's room, Capulet's wife talks
about these things with her
daughter. By now she knows
Paris wants Juliet. She seems not
troubled that Juliet is so young.
Maybe her first thought is of
the Prince. Paris is his cousin. If
Juliet marries Paris, the Prince,
in a way, would be family. And
families stick together. Then the
Capulets would be closer to the
Prince than the Montagues. Just
maybe, Montague’s wife is thinking this way.
She asks Juliet if she dreams of
marrying. “It is not something I
dream of,” Juliet answers.
Her mother begins to play up
Paris. She tells Juliet he is a
cousin of the Prince. She says
there is not a young man as good
looking in all Verona. “What say
you. Can you love this man?” she
asks.
“I will look to see, which is
what you ask,” Juliet answers.

It is night, and Capulet's party
is about to start.
Romeo,
Benvolio, and their friend
Mercutio wait outside the house.
They put on masks to cover their
faces. Then they join masked
singers and dancers and go into
the party. “We shall sing and
dance with the others,” Benvolio
says.
“I am sick with love. Love is
too hard,” Romeo sighs.
“If love be hard with you, be
hard with love,” Mercutio cries.

SC 202-13
The Magic of a Night
Capulet stands in the great
room to meet his friends. He
smiles, he laughs, as the music
begins. "Come my friends, use the
music and dance!"
They come and dance. But not
Romeo; he stands and watches.
Soon he is watching the most
beautiful lady he has ever seen.
All thoughts of other women are
gone.
The lady is dancing. When the
dance ends, Romeo will go to
where she stands. He will touch
her hand for the next dance.
Tybalt watches Romeo. Romeo
wears a mask, but Tybalt hears
him talk and knows he is Romeo.
He sees, too, who Romeo watches
and he is angry. A Montague in
the house looking at her! He
sends a boy to bring his sword.
Capulet is watching. "Tybalt,
let Romeo be. All Verona knows
him as a good young man.
Tonight he is a friend. Get hold of
yourself or leave."
Tybalt is still angry, but he
leaves.
The beautiful lady returns to
her place. She is Juliet, and
Romeo is waiting for her. He
touches her hand. They dance.
They feel close. Soon, they talk of
love. They cannot help it. The
dance ends.
Romeo wants to find out who
this beautiful girl is. He finds
Nurse, one of Juliet's servants.
He asks Nurse who Juliet's father
is. When he hears, he can't
believe it! Juliet is the daughter
of his father’s enemy! What will
he do?
The party comes to an end.
Juliet stands with Nurse. She
wants the name of that man in
the mask. Nurse will find out. In
a little while, Nurse returns. She
tells Juliet he is Romeo, the only
son of Montague, her father ’s
enemy. Juliet cannot believe it!
What will she do?

Outside, Romeo cannot leave.
Juliet is so near. Benvolio and
Mercutio come looking for him.
"Romeo, my cousin Romeo,
Romeo," Benvolio calls. But
Romeo does not answer.
"He came this way. He climbed
the garden wall. Call him,
Mercutio," Benvolio cries.
Mercutio calls. Still, Romeo
does not answer. Tonight, he will
not be found. They leave.
Romeo waits in the garden
under Juliet's window. "What
light through yonder window
breaks? It is the east and Juliet is
the sun," he whispers.
Juliet comes to the window.
She does not know Romeo is
there. She begins to talk out loud
to herself. "Romeo, Romeo,
wherefore art thou Romeo?"
She is asking why the one man
she ever loved is Romeo, a
Montague. She thinks a little
then says, "Give up your name.
Or if you will not, say you love
me — and I will give up my name,
Capulet."
Then Juliet thinks a little more
about it. She says, after all, "Tis
but your name that is my enemy.
You are yourself though, and not a
Montague. O be some other
name! What is in a name? That
which we call a rose by any other
name would smell as sweet."
Romeo speaks out. "I take you
at your word. Call me love and it
will be my new name. After,
never will I be Romeo."
Juliet is surprised that her
words were heard by someone.
"What man hides in the dark and
hears my thoughts?" Juliet asks.
"I know not how to tell you who
I am. My name, dear lady, is
hateful to myself because it is an
enemy to you," Romeo says.
"I have not heard you say a
hundred words, yet I know the
sound. Are you not Romeo, a
Montague?" Juliet asks.
But just then, Nurse calls.
Romeo must leave. If he is found
in Juliet's garden, he could be
killed.
"If you truly love me," says
Juliet, "have word for me tomorrow that we will marry. I will
send to you. What o'clock?" Juliet
asks.
"Nine," says Romeo.
"Good night, good night.
Parting is such sweet sorrow that
I shall say good night till it be
tomorrow," Juliet sighs.

Friar Laurence hurries along
near empty streets. It is early
morning, and Verona sleeps. He
carries a basket of flowers and
plants he has picked. He will dry
them and do strange things with
them. Then he will give them to
sick people to make them well.
Romeo also hurries along the
streets. He looks for Friar
Laurence. Since leaving Juliet's
garden, he runs on love. He has
never been so happy or so sure of
what he must do.
"And there he is the good
man!" shouts Romeo. "Good
morning Friar Laurence."
"Romeo, it is so early for you.
Or, maybe you have been up all
night?"
"Up all night. I have been
with my enemy, and we both hurt.
I come to you to make us well,"
Romeo says.
Friar Laurence waves a hand.
"Say what you mean in the few
words it takes."
"My heart is set on the daughter of Capulet. Her heart is set on
me. We met and we fell in love.
We wish to marry. "Will you
marry us today, good friar?"
Romeo asks.
"What change is this! Is
Rosaline, who you loved so much,
gone in a second?"
"Do not hold me to that. Juliet
loves me and I love her. Rosaline
never loved," Romeo says.
"Your words are strong and
sure. I will do this. Your love
might bring peace to Capulet and
Montague. That alone makes
good the doing," Friar Laurence
says. They leave to make ready.
Later, Benvolio and Mercutio
walk together. "Where is Romeo?
Did he go home last night?"
Mercutio asks.
"No, and there is trouble. We
need to find him," Benvolio says.
"Tybalt is angry and sends word
he wants a fight with Romeo.
Over what, no one knows."
"Poor Romeo. So sick he is
from loving Rosaline. It will not
go well for him with Tybalt,"
Mercutio cries.
As they talk, Romeo turns into
the street. He smiles. "Ah, good
morning, my friends!"
"Why did you hide from us last
night?" Mercutio asks.
"Sorry, I cannot tell you at this
time," Romeo answers.
A change has come over
Romeo. They talk. Romeo jokes
with them.
Benvolio and
Mercutio see the change. Tybalt
now seems not to be trouble.
Nurse comes into the street.
She has been looking everywhere
for Romeo. But he had on the
mask last evening. She does not
know his looks. She asks where
she can find young Romeo.
"I can tell you. But young
Romeo will be older when you find
him. I am he, getting older each
second," he laughs.
"If you be Romeo, I need to
talk with you alone," says Nurse.
Benvolio and Mercutio leave.
"My lady sent me. What word
do you have for her?" Nurse asks.
"Tell her I will wait for her at
the church. The friar will marry
us this day," Romeo answers.

answers Romeo.
"Love easily. Long love does.
Too quickly comes as late as too

Juliet comes, and Romeo takes
her in his arms.
"Good evening, Friar," Juliet
says. Romeo still holds her.
"Come. Come with me. We
will make short work of this. You

you marry," says Friar Laurence.

Death in the Street
Benvolio and Mercutio walk the
streets. They talk more of Tybalt
wanting to fight Romeo. Soon, the
talk is of the Capulets. Then the
talk is of the Capulets as their
enemies.
“Let us leave the streets. The
day is hot and hot days make getting angry easy,” Benvolio says.
“Yes, and if we run into
Capulets, we are sure to fight,”
answers Mercutio.
From behind, a voice comes to
them.
“Good day, men of
Montague — a word with you,
please.” Knowing the voice,
Benvolio and Mercutio feel for
their swords. It is Tybalt. Others
are with him.
“Why just a word? Why not a
little sword play?” Mercutio
growls.
“I can do that. But it is your
friend Romeo I want,” answers
Tybalt.
“People watch. We should talk
quietly or go where we can be
alone to fight,” says Benvolio.
“Forget that; here he comes,”
cries Tybalt. As Romeo nears,
Tybalt shouts, “Romeo, you are a
rascal! A Montague looking to
love a Capulet!”
“Tybalt, this day I must love
you. It keeps me from using my
sword. I am not a rascal.
Goodbye,” Romeo answers. He
turns to leave.
“Romeo, your words do nothing
for the harm you do me. Draw
your sword!” Tybalt shouts, as he
draws his own.
“I have not done harm to you.
And you do not know why now I
must love you. Capulet is a name
I am proud of as much as
Montague. So let it be,” Romeo
says.
Mercutio thinks Romeo has
lost his honor; he didn’t draw his
sword. Mercutio draws his sword
against Tybalt. Romeo then
draws his sword and tries to keep
them apart.
“Draw, Benvolio!” shouts
Romeo. “Beat down their swords.
Tybalt, Mercutio, end this! You
know fighting in our streets is
against the law!” Then Romeo
gets between them.
Tybalt sees his chance. He
runs his sword under Romeo’s
arm, deep into Mercutio.
“I am hurt,” Mercutio cries,
and falls.
Tybalt and his men hurry
away.
Benvolio helps Mercutio off the
street and into a house.
Mercutio’s life will soon end.
“I am killed by a Capulet--a
rascal,” cries Mercutio. He looks
at Romeo. “Why came you
between us? I was killed under
your arm,” he says. “May bad
things happen to both your houses.”
“My friend is about to lose his
life because of me,” cries Romeo,
“and because of Tybalt’s words.
And Tybalt became my cousin
when I married Juliet!”
Benvolio cries out. “Mercutio
is gone.”
Tybalt soon learns about
Mercutio. He comes to the place
where Mercutio lies dead.
“You killed Mercutio,” says
Romeo. “And you come back
proud of it. Tybalt, take back the
word ‘rascal’ you called me--or
make ready to meet Mercutio
where he is!”
Swords come out. Tybalt and
Romeo fight to the death. Romeo
kills Tybalt.
“Romeo, away! Be gone!”
shouts Benvolio. “The people are
angry. They saw you kill Tybalt.
The Prince will have you put to
death. Be gone! I say.”
“O, I am my own enemy,” cries
Romeo. And he leaves in a hurry.
The Prince comes. The
Capulets and Montagues come.
“Who are they who began this
fighting?” the Prince asks.
“O, good Prince. I can tell you
everything,” says Benvolio. There
lies Tybalt, killed by Romeo after
Tybalt killed Mercutio.”
“Tybalt? My brother’s child?”
Capulet’s wife cries. “O, the blood
runs from my dear brother’s son.
Prince, for blood of ours let run
the blood of Montague! O my dear
brother, how this hurts so.”
“From the beginning, Benvolio.
How did this happen?” asks the
Prince.
Benvolio tells the Prince how
the fighting began.
Capulet’s wife waits for
Benvolio to finish. “He is cousin
to the Montague. He does not
speak true! Romeo killed Tybalt.
Romeo must die!”
“Not Romeo, good Prince,” says
Benvolio. He was Mercutio’s
friend. Should he not have
brought Tybalt to an end?”
The Prince spoke next.
“Romeo, you have broken the law.
Because you took a life, you must
leave Verona. The people are
angry. If you are found here, it
will be the end of you.”
Romeo feels sick. How can he
leave Verona? How can he leave
his Juliet?

SC 202-16
A Day of Sorrow
Juliet, married just a few hours,
is about to lose her husband. Her
cousin Tybalt is dead, killed by
her husband, Romeo. The Prince
will now send Romeo out of
Verona. But Juliet does not know
any of this. She thinks only of
Romeo coming to her this night.
Juliet cannot stand still. She
takes a walk in her garden. She
dreams of her life with Romeo.
She wonders where he may be.
What she feels comes from her
like a soft wind. “Come gentle
night; come, loving black night.
Give me my Romeo. And when I
shall die, take him and cut him
out in little stars. And he will
make the face of heaven so fine,
that all the world will be in love
with night.”
As Juliet dreams, Nurse hurries
into the garden.
“Now, Nurse. What news?”
asks Juliet.
Nurse is full of sorrow. She
cries out, “Ah, he is dead! He is
dead! He is dead! It is over my
dear lady. He is gone. He is
killed. He is dead!”
Juliet cannot believe what she
hears. Could her husband, of just
a few hours, be dead? “Can heaven want him more than I?” she
cries.
“Romeo can, though heaven
cannot. Who would have thought
it would be Romeo!” Nurse says,
leaving Juliet to wonder what she
means.
“Why do you hurt me this
way?” answers Juliet. “Did
Romeo kill himself? Is he dead or
alive? Tell me, Nurse. If he’s
dead, please make your news
soft.”
“O, Tybalt. Tybalt, the best
friend I had. O, gentle Tybalt,
good gentleman, that I should live
to see you dead,” says Nurse.
“Tybalt!” shouted Juliet. “Is
Tybalt dead? Is Romeo dead? My
dearest cousin and my dearest
lord?” Juliet asks. “Tell me, Nurse.
Which one is dead?”
“Tybalt is gone. It was your
Romeo who killed him. Now
Romeo must leave Verona,”
answers Nurse.
“Oh, No!” cries Juliet. “Did my
Romeo’s hand take Tybalt’s life?”
not wanting to believe it.
“It did, it did! O, the bad day,
it did. Shame come to Romeo,”
Nurse answers again.
“May you burn for saying
that,” says Juliet. “Romeo was
not born to shame!”
“Will you speak well of him
that killed your cousin?” Nurse
asks.
“Shall I speak badly of him
that is my husband?” answers
Juliet. “If Romeo killed Tybalt,
then Tybalt must have wanted to
kill Romeo. O, what sad trouble is
this. Tybalt is dead, and my
Romeo is put out of Verona. To
me, losing Romeo this way is such
sorrow,” says Juliet.
Nurse feels bad for Juliet. She
tells Juliet, “Go to your room and
wait for my knock. I know where
to find Romeo. I will go ahead
and bring him to you.”
“O, find him, my dear servant.
And give this ring to him. Tell
him to come to me and take his
last goodbye,” Juliet cries.
There was only one place
where Romeo could be hiding . . .
the church!
*
*
*
“Killing Tybalt calls for death,
but this kind Prince lets you live.
Give thanks he only sends you
away,” Friar Laurence says.
“Heaven is where Juliet lives.
Everyone, every cat and dog may
see Juliet, but not her husband!”
Romeo cries, falling to the ground
and hating himself.
“Frightening is to see you this
way,” says Friar Laurence, as he
shakes his head.
Just then, Nurse knocks on the
church door. When no one
answers, she walks in. She sees
Friar Laurence.
“Where is Romeo?” Nurse asks.
“There on the ground,” Friar
Laurence points.
“Stand up! Stand up if you are
a man,” says Nurse. “Do it for
Juliet’s sake!” she shouts.
Romeo stands and takes
Juliet’s ring. “Tell me of Juliet
and what does she think of me
who killed her cousin?”
Nurse answers. “She cries and
calls for dead Tybalt to come back.
And she cries for her Romeo.”
Romeo is very sad. His heart
is full of sorrow. Friar Laurence
sighs at the look of him. “Wake
up man! Your Juliet lives. Be
happy. Tybalt would have killed
you, but you killed him first. Be
happy. The law called for you to
be put to death. But you live! Be
happy. Go this night to Juliet.
Some day you will come back to
Verona.”
The friar looks at Nurse. “Go
on ahead. Romeo will soon follow.”
“Romeo,” began Friar
Laurence, “it is the Prince’s word.
You may live, but you must leave
Verona.”
“To be sent away is more
frightening than to die,” answers
Romeo.

Capulet’s Plan
All of Verona talks of Tybalt and
Mercutio and how they met their
end. They talk of Romeo and how
the Prince has sent him away.
With this in mind, Paris hurries
to Capulet’s house.
Paris is sure that this is the
time to ask for Juliet’s hand. He
will take her away from the fighting and killing. He’s sure Capulet
will be proud to give him Juliet’s
hand.
Capulet and his wife hear a
knock at the door. It is Paris.
They let him in. Paris asks
Capulet for his daughter’s hand in
marriage.
“Paris, you must wait. Juliet
is in so much pain. She loved her
cousin very much. This is not the
time to talk to her of marriage,”
says Capulet.
But his wife will not be still.
She has liked this match from the
start. It cannot be too soon.
“I will talk to her,” she says, to
her husband’s surprise. “I will
know her mind by tomorrow,”
sounding sure to get the answer
she wants.
Now Capulet is worried. This
is Paris, a cousin of the Prince.
After the fighting and killing--a
Capulet-Montague thing again-should he look weak in front of
Paris while his wife looks strong?
This marriage is an answer to his
dream. In a way, this marriage
would make him part of the
Prince’s family. That would be
very sad news for the Montagues.
Capulet suddenly changes his
mind. “We must end this, dear
wife. I will answer for Juliet. She
will marry you, Paris. She will do
as I say. I know she will. In three
days it will be,” he says.
“I wish it were tomorrow,”
Paris cries.
“Go, Wife,” says Capulet. “Get
Juliet ready to marry.”
Soon enough, Lady Capulet
thinks to herself. After this terrible day, Juliet needs to sleep.
No one knows that Juliet is
already married. Not Capulet,
not his wife, not even Paris.
*
*
*
Now it is near morning light,
and Romeo is still with Juliet.
“Do you go now?” Juliet sighs.
“For sure, it is not near day.”
“I heard the lark who sings
just before morning. I must be
gone and live--or stay and die,”
answers Romeo.
Juliet listens for a little while.
“It is the lark! O, now be gone,
my dear Romeo.”
Just then, Nurse knocks at the
door. Juliet’s mother is coming.
Romeo goes his way in a hurry.
Lady Capulet finds her daughter crying. “If Juliet must cry, let
her cry because Tybalt’s killer
lives,” she says.
Juliet must hide her love for
Romeo. She must hide that she is
his wife. She makes believe she
wants him dead.
“I will not be happy until I see
Romeo dead,” she lies.
Juliet’s mother smiles. “Until
then. Here now is good news.
Your father gives you in marriage.
In two days, you will marry
Paris.”
“It will not be!” said Juliet
with surprise. The thought made
her sick. “Why do you hurry to see
me marry?” she asks. “And why
must I marry a man I do not love?”
Her mother starts to answer,
but in comes Capulet himself.
“Husband,” began Lady
Capulet, “she will not hear of marrying Paris.”
“What!” shouted Capulet.
“She is to marry a gentleman, a
cousin of the Prince! She is not
proud?
She does not give
thanks?”
Juliet answers for herself. “I
am not proud. I cannot be proud
of what I do not like. But I thank
you for what you try to do.”
Her words make Capulet very
angry. He shouts and calls her
names. If she does not marry
Paris, he will put her out of the
house. He will make her live in
the street.
Lady Capulet thinks her husband has gone too far with his
words. “You are too hot,” she says
to him.
Once again, Capulet shames
Juliet, then leaves the room.
Capulet’s wife starts to follow.
“O, my sweet mother,” Juliet
calls. “Do not turn away from
me.”
“Do not talk to me right now,”
answers Lady Capulet. “For now,
I am done with you.”
*
*
*
Later, Nurse comes to Juliet’s
room. Juliet sighs. “Tell me,
Nurse. Romeo, my sweet husband
lives. How can I marry Paris?”
she asks.
“Romeo is gone and will never
be back. No one will know you
are married. Marry Paris. He is
much better than Romeo,”
answers Nurse.
Juliet does not like Nurse’s
words. “O, terrible woman! What
could be more of a trouble--telling
me to marry while I am married?
Or speaking against Romeo?
Romeo, who you once said was so
good. I am done with you, Nurse!
Now go tell my father and mother
that I go to see Friar Laurence.”

A Deep Sleep
Juliet hurries to Friar
Laurence for help. She sees no
way out of her trouble. She is
married to Romeo. But now,
Capulet says she must marry
Paris in two days. Only Nurse
and Friar Laurence know she is
already married.
Paris is already with Friar
Laurence. He tells the friar he
will marry Juliet.
“Marry in two days?” the friar
asks with great surprise. He does
not know what to do. He cannot
marry Juliet again. Must he tell
Capulet she is already married?
Married to Romeo? He shakes at
the thought.
Paris sees that Friar
Laurence looks troubled. He tells
the friar, “Capulet will have it so.
I would hope it too.”
“But have you talked to
Juliet?” Friar Laurence asks.
“She cries for Tybalt. I cannot
talk to her of love,” Paris answers.
A knock at the door brings an
end to their talk. It is Juliet.
“My lady and my wife!” cries
Paris.
His words make Juliet feel
sick. “That may be when I may be
a wife,” she answers, with a
growl.
Paris is not troubled at her
words. He says goodbye and
leaves the church, smiling.
Now Juliet and Friar
Laurence are alone. “O, shut the
door!” cries Juliet. “And when you
have done so, come cry with me. I
am past hope! I am past help!”
she cries.
Friar Laurence does not know
what to say. “O, Juliet, I hear you
must marry Paris.”
“Do not tell me what you hear;
tell how to stop it! I belong to
Romeo and can belong to no other.
Before I am made to do so, I will
kill myself!” Juliet says, showing
a knife in her hand.
Friar Laurence thinks of a way
out. “Go home,” he says. “Try to
be happy. Say you will marry
Paris. The night before the marriage, drink this drink I give you.
You will fall into a deep sleep.
You’ll be found in the morning-you will look dead. You will be
taken to the Capulet tomb. You
will lie there asleep for two days.
Then you will wake. I will send
word to Romeo. When you wake,
Romeo will be there and take you
back with him to Mantua.”
Juliet’s heart is full of thanksgiving. “Love make me strong
and strong I shall get it done,” she
says.
*
*
*
Juliet returns home to find
Capulet making ready for the
marriage. She tries to look happy.
She talks to her father. “Friar
Laurence helped me to see how
wrong I was. I am sorry and will
do as you wish,” she lied.
“We owe much to the good
friar,” Capulet says, kissing his
daughter. “Let us not wait. Let
us get this done tomorrow. I,
myself, will tell Paris.”
“Let it be so, Father,” she says.
Up in her room, Juliet calls
for Nurse. “Come, Nurse,” she
says. “Help me pick a fair dress
for marrying.”
After picking out the marriage dress, Juliet asks Nurse to
leave. “I need to pray for a good
tomorrow,” she says.
Alone in her room, Juliet
holds the drink that will put her
to sleep. She wonders, What if it
does not work? Shall I be married
again in the morning? No, I will
use the knife before that happens.
She puts the drink to her
mouth. “Romeo,” she whispers to
herself, “here is drink I drink to
you. I shall see you once again,”
she hopes.

Paris.
“Paris comes!” shouts Capulet.
“Wife! Nurse! Wake Juliet!”
Nurse runs to Juliet’s room.
She is fast asleep. “Lady, lady,
wake,” cries Nurse. “You marry
today!” But Juliet still sleeps.
Nurse tries again to get her
up. “Wake my lady; Paris is
here.” O, how sound she sleeps,
thinks Nurse. She shakes Juliet
to wake her. But she does not get
up from her sleep.
Nurse screams! “Lady, lady.
O, no, my lady. She is dead! She
is dead!”
Lady Capulet wakes to
Nurse’s screams. She runs to
Juliet’s room. “O, my child, my
only life! Wake up, look up, or I
will die with you!” she cries.
Capulet gets between his wife
and Juliet. “Let me see her! She
is cold. Death lies on her like ice
on the sweetest flower,” he says

The Missing Letter
In Mantua, Romeo waits for
news of Juliet. He does not know
Juliet was to marry Paris. He
does not know Juliet took the
drink that put her into a deep
sleep. He doesn’t know Juliet is
thought to be dead, that she now
lies asleep--not dead--in the tomb.
He did not get the letter Friar
Laurence sent, telling him of
these things. Friar John could
not get to Mantua to give the letter to Romeo.
Now in the night comes the
sound of a hard-riding horse. It
stops outside Romeo’s door. A
knock, and Balthasar, Romeo's
servant, pushes open the door. He
comes from Verona with news.
“You bring news?” Romeo
asks. “Tell me, how is my lady?”
Balthasar could feel his heart
beating fast. “The news is as bad
as bad can be, Romeo. Your Juliet
sleeps forever. I saw her being
put in the Capulet tomb.”
Now Romeo’s heart misses a
beat. “It is so? It is so?” Romeo
cries. “Well, it will not stay this
way. Balthasar, ready the horses.
We will ride to Verona tonight!”
As Romeo makes his way to
Verona, he looks up at the sky.
My beautiful Juliet, he thinks to
himself, soon I will come to you.
But he wonders how he will take
his life. A poor man who makes
medicine lives near, he remembers. He's so poor, he might take
my gold to make me a poison.
Romeo knocks at the man’s
door.
“Who calls at this late hour?”
asks the man, who had been fast
asleep.
“I bring gold at this late hour,”
says Romeo. “Will you not answer
your door for me?”
The poor man acts fast and
opens the door with a smile.
Romeo tells the man he wants
a strong poison that will bring a
fast death.
The look on the man’s face
changed. His happy face became
a troubled look. “I want your
gold, but I cannot do what you
ask,” he says. “I would be put to
death for selling you poison.”
“Only if you are caught,” says
Romeo. Only the two of us will
know. I will be gone from Mantua
this night, and I will not return.”
Romeo places 45 pieces of gold on
the table.
The poor man looked at the
gold. His heart was beating fast.
He had never seen so much gold.
He takes the gold and puts it in
his pocket. He tells Romeo to wait
while he makes the poison. Soon
he returns. “Put this in some
water. When you drink the water,
you will leave this life forever,” he
says.
Romeo takes the poison and
puts it in his pocket. He gets
Balthasar, and the two of them
ride to Verona. They want to get
there before day’s light.

At the church, Friar Laurence
is thinking about Juliet. A shout
breaks his thought.
“Friar Laurence!” calls Friar
John. “It is I, Friar John.”
“Yes, Friar John. I am here.
What news from Romeo?” he asks.
“Did you go to Mantua and give
Romeo my letter?”
“No, Friar,” answers Friar
John. I was very sick. I could not
carry your letter to him. Here is
your letter,” he says.
Friar Laurence holds the letter. “O, No!” says Friar Laurence.

“Give me the iron,” says
Romeo to Balthasar. He hands

Balthasar does not like the
sound of Romeo’s words. “I will be

But when he is just out of sight,
he hides and watches.
As Romeo opens the tomb,
Paris shouts, “Stop what you are

As Friar Laurence hurries to
the tomb, Balthasar steps out of
the shadows.
Friar Laurence points. “Tell
me, Balthasar, what light is that?
Who that lives is in the tomb?”
“The light is a torch,”
Balthasar answers. “Romeo holds
it, I hope.”
“Come with me,” Friar
Laurence says, sick with worry.
Balthasar answers. “I cannot
go with you. Romeo said he would
do me harm if I followed. But I
did look. I saw him fighting with
someone. I think he killed the
other.”
Friar Laurence goes into the
tomb and finds Romeo and Paris
dead.
Juliet wakes. “O, good friar,
where is my Romeo? I do remember well where I should be. And
here I am. Where is my Romeo?”
The Friar points to the two
dead men. “A terrible thing has
happened,” he begins. “There,
dead, lies your Romeo. And there,
dead, lies Paris, too. But now I
hear the Prince’s watchers coming! I cannot stay here. Come! I
will tell you of this as we go!”
Juliet will not follow Friar
Laurence. “You go, Friar. But I
must stay,” she says.
Friar Laurence leaves Juliet
and hurries from the tomb.
Juliet looks at her husband.
She sees something in his hand.
“What is this glass in my true
love’s hand?” she asks herself. “It
is poison,” she says. “And not a
drop left for me. I will kiss his
lips and maybe some is still there.
Maybe enough for me to go to
him,” she says, kissing Romeo.
Juliet hears the watchers outside the tomb. They must not find
me here, she thinks to herself.
She takes Romeo’s knife and ends
her life.
The watchers hurry into the
tomb and find Romeo, Juliet, and
Paris, all dead. Outside, they
catch Friar Laurence and
Balthasar. Soon, the Prince
comes. Then the Capulets and
Montagues come.
“Bring me those who have a
part in this,” says the Prince. He
looks at the friar.
“At me you look?” asks Friar
Laurence. His legs start to shake
because he knows of his part in all
this. “I will tell what part I had in
this and what part was not my
doing,” he answers.
“Get on with it then,” says the
Prince. Tell us all that you know.”
“Romeo, who lies dead in the
tomb, was husband to Juliet. And
Juliet, also dead, was Romeo’s
faithful wife. I married them . . .,”
and Friar Laurence tells his story.
“Enough! good friar. Where is
Romeo’s man? What can he say to
this?” the Prince asks.
Balthasar answers. “I brought
Romeo news of Juliet’s death. He
came from Mantua to this place.
This letter he would have me give
his father.”
“Give me the letter. I will look
on it,” says the Prince. But the
Prince had a few more questions.
“Where is Paris’ servant? And
what brought Paris here?”
Paris’ servant answers the
Prince. “He came with flowers to
set at his lady’s tomb. Soon,
another came, and Paris drew his
sword on him. I ran away to call
the watchers.”
The Prince read Romeo’s letter.
“This letter does make good the
friar’s words--and, that Romeo did
buy a poison and came to this
tomb to die with Juliet.”
The Prince looked over at
Capulet and Montague. “See
what your hate brings?”
So full of sorrow was Capulet.
He looked at Montague. “O, my
brother, give me your hand. Look
at what our fighting has done.
Our children lie here dead
because of our hate for one another.”
Montague takes Capulet’s
hand in his own. “I will put up a
statue of your Juliet. It will be
made of gold. As Verona is
known, so shall Juliet be known.
There shall be no figure at such
cost be set, as that of true and
faithful Juliet!”
The Prince looks at Capulet
and Montague. He knows their
fighting is over. “A sad peace this
morning with it brings. Go. Have
more talk of these sad things. For
never was a story of more sorrow
than this of Juliet and her
Romeo.”
