THE HISTORY OF THE SWAN LIVE MUSIC AT THE SWAN

THE HISTORY OF THE SWAN
The Swan dates back to 1721, which is the first date
written in the licence victualler’s register, but is believed
to have been trading as an inn much longer.
As a ‘coaching inn’ it is reputed to have been the final
drinking place for victims of the ‘Gibbet’ Tyburn Gallows
which is now known as Marble Arch. Claude Duval, the
famous highwayman who was very active on the London
to Uxbridge road, is alleged to have had his final drink in
here before being hanged at Tyburn in 1670.
It is also suggested that the sayings ‘‘One for the road’’
& ‘‘He’s on the wagon’’ started here! The jailer would pull
up in the prisoners’ cage outside and come in and say
‘‘Give him one for the road’’ and once the jailer left and
pulled the cage away, the men in the bar would say ‘‘He’s
on the wagon’’ meaning he will never drink again.
The Swan also prides itself on being part of Fuller Smith
& Turner, London’s oldest independent family brewery
based in Chiswick, only five miles from The Swan.
The award winning ales London Pride, ESB & Discovery,
along with our very first organic beer, Honeydew, can be
enjoyed here.
Thank you for visiting The Swan. Enjoy your stay, and if
there is anything we can do to help you with your London
visit, please let us know.
