Westgate House Newsletter
April 2015
Hi Everyone and welcome to our April Newsletter
I have got to start off by telling you all about the great time we had on
‘Wear a Hat Day’ this was raising awareness for brain cancer research.
We all had fun choosing a hat to suit our character .
It was funny to see how everyone’s whole demeanour
changed when they put on their hat.
Tea, welsh cakes made by Eira, fairy cakes and a good
old fashion sing a long.
St. Patrick’s Day
Saw the home alive with
the sound of Irish music
and tapping feet, as the
Viv O’Grady school of
Irish dance, descended
upon us.
The pupils from Wallingford
School, Fir Tree and
St. Nicholas were given special
permission to leave school to
come and dance for us.
Fantastic!!
Lets make fruit smoothies
Dorothy was on slicing and
chopping duties
Strawberries, blueberries,
grapes, raspberries, pears,
apples, bananas, oranges
and mango’s which she
had never tried before….
‘Mmmmm’
she said ,as she
chewed her way
around the juicy
stone.
Each resident chose
their own ingredients
to make a smoothie
and everyone tried
each others.
Jean really enjoyed
putting all her favourite
fruits together, and
discussing the different
flavours in her final
product.
There were a lot of
very full tummy’s!
BIG occasions
Love is
still in the
air for
Peter &
Beryl who
celebrated
63 years of
marriage
Stan
90 Years Old
‘Cheers’
Mable
Celebrated her
105th birthday
March 18th was ‘World Poetry Day’
We sat together and read all the poems we
learnt at school.
It is amazing how they come back to you
once you hear the first line. This was by
far the favourite to recite...
Daffodils
By
William Wordsworth
I wander’d lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills.
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretch’d in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay;
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee;
A poet could not but be gay, In such a
jocund company!
I gazed and gazed but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought;
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
Other poems we remembered included;
How Do I Love Thee
By Elizabeth Barret Browning
Sonnet 18
By William Shakesphear
The Owl & The Pussy Cat
By Edward Lear
But the one that really lifted the roof was;
Jerusalem
By
William Blake
And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green:
And was the holy Lamb of God,
On England's pleasant pastures seen!
And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here,
Among these dark Satanic Mills?
Bring me my Bow of burning gold;
Bring me my Arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my Chariot of fire!
I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In England's green & pleasant Land
We really lifted the roof on Nightingale
as residents, staff and visitors sang
this poem which later became one of
the top 10 most popular hymns.
The corridors were alive and ringing
with song as everyone
put all their body and
sole into singing this
A total of 3 times!!
