The Cycling Capital
Le Tour and more!
Lancashire is arguably the “cycling capital”
of England – with many miles of quiet
roads and tracks passing through beautiful
countryside. It is home to Tour de France
champion Sir Bradley Wiggins, Olympic
gold medal cyclist Steven Burke and Brian
Cookson, OBE, President of the Union Cycliste
Internationale (UCI) – the world cycling
organisation.
Probably one of the biggest events in the
cycling calendar is coming to these parts.
The first stage of the Tour de France is
skirting our border on July 5th & 6th 2014.
So why not come and stay in Pendle, take
in the Tour and enjoy some great cycling
of your own? Shortly after the Tour is an
exciting street cycle race in Pendle, the
Colne Grand Prix, which features many of
the country’s top cyclists.
Pendle, in East Lancashire, is fast becoming
a centre for cycling. In June, a 1.1km closed
road circuit will open, thanks to funding from
Sport England (via British Cycling and Inspired
Facilities), The Lancashire Environment Fund
(LEF) and Pendle Council Council. The circuit
is based at Swinden Playing Fields in Nelson,
it will be known as the Steven Burke Sports
Hub. And there are plans for a state-of-theart velodrome in Barnoldswick from Pendle
Company, Hope Technology.
To top this off, Pendle has some of the
most stunning countryside in the North of
England and boasts a wonderful range of
varied cycling routes from family friendly to
the very challenging. All the cycling routes
can be found in the Cycling in Pendle leaflet
(detailed opposite).
Brian Cookson, OBE, President of the UCI,
said:
“Pendle certainly has some challenging hills
for road and mountain bikers, but it also has
some great flat roads and cycle paths for
the less energetic, like the Pendle Cycle Way
along the canal. I like to ride the route of
the 2010 National Championships, through
Barley and over Pendleside then down to
Blacko and back through Roughlee, followed
by coffee and cake at the Cabin.
The Colne Grand Prix is one of the best
places to see Britain’s top cyclists. With the
field lapping once every minute or so, you
can soon pick a rider and cheer them on whether they are Olympic medallists or just
your local favourites!”
Cycling in Pendle is a fantastic
collection of everything cycling
in Pendle.

Grand opening of the Steven Burke Sports Hub
Pendle’s Olympic Champion, Steven Burke will
officially open the new 1.1km closed road circuit
at Swinden Playing Fields in Nelson on Saturday
28th of June 2014 at 9.00am, followed by a full
day of racing. Activities continue at the Hub on
Sunday and all week leading up to the Grand depart in
Leeds of the Tour de France on Saturday 5th July, which
passes within a short bike ride of Pendle.
Facilities:
The 1.1km closed road circuit has been built around
the existing football and cricket pitches. On site is also
a sports pavilion, which will be refurbished to provide
changing rooms and club rooms for Cycle Sport Pendle
(CSP). The circuit will be open to the public at specific
times and used for pre-booked events or coaching
sessions at other times. It can also be flood lit by
arrangement.

Travelling from Lancashire
Times to be at each Spectator Hub
As Pendle is situated on the Yorkshire/Lancashire
border, it’s the ideal place to base yourself for
the Tour de France. Stages 1 and 2 come within
just a few miles of us and it’s really easy to reach
some of the main Spectator Hubs from here. The
map on the right shows the main Spectator Hubs
closest to this part of Lancashire. You can access
them by car by the major roads that you can
see on the map. We have also suggested some
cycle routes if you want to ride there. If you are
travelling by train please check that your train will
stop at the station you need as some may not
due to the race.
Important – this is a major international
cycle race. The route of the Tour de France is
closed to traffic nearly all day. You need to be
at these hubs EARLY or otherwise you may be
disappointed. Traffic will be heavy and there will
be lots of spectators. So travel EARLY!
