Overview: This event is 50 miles in 20 hours covered by running and/or walking…walking all the way if you
wish. Come one, or come as a group. Starting September 18th from 4-6 p.m. at Utah Lake State Park at Provo
River Trailhead, walking on this trail to the mouth of Provo Canyon, then head west to connect to the Murdock Canal
Trail, then almost over to Alpine highway, returning back the same way. Wrist bands will be put on each participant
at that time and they will return along that same path. There will be 22 aid stations along the path, and professional
medical personnel providing water and advice for participants. The stations are also where parents and others can
join in the walk, support, feed, and aid youth in this event. Restrooms and commercial business are along the path
for use and refreshment. We encourage groups to do it together but doing it individually works as well. Parents and
leaders of boys are encouraged to participate (all or part way) with your youth. For the back half of this event, that
support will make all the difference in the world! Those completing the event within 20 hours will receive a quality
key chain (that will be a reminder for years) that will say on it “I CAN DO HARD THINGS”
Former General YM President Larry Gibson spoke in the last General Conference on the value of this 50/20 event
and what it did for him personally and his own boys. Those who do this will remember and talk of this and what they
learned from it for the rest of their lives.
For Questions: Contact your YM Ward or Stake YM Presidents, or Keith Holdaway:
[email protected]. Participants register online at: www.utahscouts.org/orem5020 . There will be a small
registration fee to cover small costs, and parents will need to agree to the parental liability release. Out of all the
District activities to participate in, this is one that will have lasting effect. Come spend the night with us. You can do
Hard Things!!!!
OBJECTIVES
1. Build confidence and determination as our youth prove to themselves that they can ‘DO HARD THINGS'
2. Build stronger relationships in their families and quorum.
3. Help our youth follow the example of the Savior in courage, determination, and finishing.
Tips and Helps for the 50/20
1. Remember that you will get very tired and at some point you may want to quit. This event is about staying power
and determination. Being able to keep going when it gets tough and hard------ is what this is all about. Be tough
and endure it well. Remember that “YOU CAN DO HARD THINGS"
2. The first 25 miles you will have about 22 (numbered) checkpoints that will provide water, encouragement, and
medical advice. Stake sponsored checkpoints will patrol their assigned space by bicycle occasionally for your
safety. You will return to all of those same 22 checkpoints on the same route back. You will need to carry your
snacks, food, and a water bottle to keep filling. A headlamp while traveling at night is a must!
3. Foot care is very important in reducing or eliminating friction and blisters. Some have used a double pair of
socks to reduce friction. The best we have seen are those who wear a pair of small nylon socks (like women
use) that eliminate the friction on the skin of the feet. Have some band aids with you and athletic tape. Putting a
Band-Aid, tape or mole skin on a soft/hot spot before it becomes a big blister is a smart thing to do. Don’t use
new shoes, break them in before the event. Smart ones may even carry with them another pair of socks or two
and rotate them to keep feet dry.
4. Have a Cell Phone if you can, or have one with your group if possible. You can call and tell your support people
which check point you are coming to so they can assist with nourishment, energy, foot care, and even walk with
you if/when it gets tough. A list of theses checkpoints and addresses will be provided. Having family, friends and
quorum members walk with you is helpful. We encourage the buddy system for support and safety. The last 15
miles may be pretty tough. Leaders are smart to call parents of boys when it gets tough to help walk the last part
and provide encouragement.
5. We will have Stakes start at assigned times. This will have YM walking with those they know and will fun and
better support for each other. Individual numbers will be assigned and individual starting times recorded. Those
who can’t make their Stake assigned time, come and start when you can.
6. Keep stretching your leg muscles as you go. We advise against sitting down and resting for an extended time
because you will tighten up and it will be hard to stretch out again. Just keep plugging away seems best.
7. Keep your mind occupied with good thoughts. Sing your favorite church, primary or inspirational song. Sing out
loud. Sing together. Encourage all you see to continue in positive ways.
