high.TheChiefMosque
wasalsohere,sothat
whenpeoplekneltin
prayertheywerealso
bowingdowntothe
Caliph.
Someareasofthecitywere

Baghdad’spopulation was
nearly1million. Itwasa
cosmopolitan place,with

Asystemofcanals
broughtwaterfromthe
RiverTigris,thisallowed
goodstobemoved
aroundthecityand
provided drinkingwater
forthepeople.
Toaddtothecity’s protection,the
spacebetweenthemiddle and
innerwallswaswheretheCaliph’s
officials andArmyofficerslived.
Atthecentrewastheroundcity,thecityw
wellprotectedwithathickouterwalland
innerwalls,foraddeddefenceitalsohad
deepmoat.

brickswhichhelpedtokeepthehouses
coolandsecure.
Windowsfacedintothe
coolercourtyard.The
courtyardwouldcontain
fruittreeslikeLemonand
Orangeandapoolor
fountainofwater.
Wealthyfamilieshadcarved
frontdoors.
This16thCenturypictureshowsrich
peoplerelaxingintheirgarden,andbeing
entertainedbymusicians.Somericher
houseswouldhavemorethan1
courtyard,fordifferentpeopleinthe
familye.g.women.
Aroundthecourtyard,richerhouseswould
haveacoveredwalkway,whichwouldhelpto
keepthesun’sheatofftheinhabitants.
Poorerfamiliesmayshareahouseorhaveno
courtyardandfewerwindows,theywould
stillbenefitfromthecityplanwhich
tunnelledcoolerwinddownthestreetsand
thehouses.
