AIM: Did the Legislative Assembly disrupt or stabilize France?
1791-1792: French emigres (French nobles and clergy that fled France) begin telling
other countries with monarchies the horror stories of the revolution.
DISRUPT or STABILZIE:
Aug 1791: Declaration of Pillnitz - Issued by the emperor of Austria, Joseph II (Marie
Antoinette’s Brother) that stated that other monarchies would use their own militaries
to protect the French Monarchy.
DISRUPT or STABILZIE:
Apr. 20, 1792: France declares war on Austria and Prussia.
DISRUPT or STABILZIE:
Mid 1792: Food prices continue to rise as shortages are once again frequent, and
prices of other goods increase as well. French currency begins to drop in value.
DISRUPT or STABILZIE:
Sept. 20, 1792: French army stops the Prussians and Austrians at the Battle of
Valmy (Belgium). This helped reverse the course of the war and prevent Austria from
taking Paris, the capital of France.
DISRUPT or STABILZIE:
Two political parties emerge: The Jacobins and the Girondins. The Jacobins are
considered to be a radical (extreme) party that is well educated. The Girondins are
more moderate (mild) and have less wealth. Both support the revolution but have
different opinions on how to proceed.
DISRUPT or STABILZIE:
San-culottes: Working class men and women who did not wear the traditional knee
breeches that the nobles wore. These people gained power and began separate
themselves from the nobility.
DISRUPT or STABILZIE:
The Girondin wanted to keep King Louis XVI in power, but the Jacobins didn’t. For
now, the Girondin win this argument and the King is still kept under house arrest.
DISRUPT or STABILZIE:
The September Massacres: By September 7th, 1792 over 1,600 citizens, clergy and
prisoners had been killed. The Girondins urged citizens to stop the violence while
Jacobins encouraged the bloodshed. The gap between Girondins and Jacobins
grew more and more with the Jacobins becoming the more powerful force.
