Dresden, capital city of the Free State of Saxony, and long associated with the Kings and
Electors of Saxony, was once known as ‘the Jewel Box’, because of its wealth of Baroque and
Rococo architecture. Largely destroyed by fire-bombing in the Second World War(see Kurt
Vonnegut’s ‘Slaughterhouse Five’), the Old City centre has now been restored, and shines in
all (well, most) of its former glory. Meissen, historically credited with the creation of the finest
porcelain in the West, has collections to prove it and public spaces and buildings which
provide the perfect setting. Leipzig, Germany’s Boomtown since the Wall came down, and a
significant player in the anti-Communism revolution of 1989, is the largest city in Saxony, and
its ‘most livable’. Having the world’s oldest continuous trade fair, dating from the Middle Ages,
the largest public Memorial in Germany, and one of Europe’s great great Opera Houses
(associated with Felix Mendelssohn), Leipzig has survived the Soviets and thrives in the
present day.
