All around the museum are bell and
pomegranate patterns like the one
pictured above, Some of Robert
Browning’s early poems were published
in a series of pamphlets called Bells and
Pomegranates.
This guide was designed in partnership
with Waco Independent School District to
enhance the experience of the Armstrong
Browning Library & Museum specifically
for children in first through third grade.
Armstrong Browning Library opened its
doors in 1951. In its over 60 years, the
library has hosted thousands of elementary
aged students and their families for either
individual visits or public events like our
popular Pied Piper Tours. We welcome
students of any age and their families to visit
the Armstrong Browning Library & Museum
whenever the doors are open.
There are bells and pomegranates
everywhere in the museum, including
places like in the stained glass windows,
around the door frames, and on the
floors.
How many bells and pomegranates did
you find on your visit?

BARRETT BROWNING
Robert Browning was a poet from
England who was born over 200 years
ago. He and his wife, Elizabeth Barrett
Browning, wrote many poems and
letters. This library shows a lot of their
work and things they did throughout
their life.
Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning
named their son Robert W.B. Browning,
but nicknamed him “Pen.” Why do you
think they called him this?
This guide has questions about the
Brownings life and about this library. Try
to find the answers by looking around
this building!
In this picture of “Pen,” he has curls.
This was common for children at this
time whether they were boys or girls.
What else about his appearance seems
different from how boys look today?
Your answers will be used to decode the
final answer on the back. If you need
any help, you can ask the experts at the
front desk.
In what room can you find this quote at
the top of the walls?
“Youth is the only time to think and to
decide on a great course: Manhood with
action follows.”
