Jack-O-Lantern Safety
Please remember that you may not use
candles to provide light for carved pumpkins. We suggest a battery operated
“candle” or small flashlight if you wish to
illuminate your pumpkin for display on
Halloween night. This rule is for everyone’s
protection.
As Halloween Eves
Come by the office to receive a “trick or
treat” sign that will go on the outside of
your door. This would state whether or not
trick or treaters could come to your door.
We will have the “yes” or “no” signs in
the office for you to stop by and get before
the holiday. Also, please come by the 30th
to celebrate Halloween with the office
staff. We will have candy and refreshments
in the Clubhouse. Please remember to stay
safe and be aware of the children while
driving through the community!
Package Overload
We are experiencing a change of season and
it’s effecting our weather and our package
intake! We have started a new system to try
to stay organized. When getting a package
please bring current photo ID with you.
Thank you in advance for your patience.
Rent Due Dates
We’d never want to make you blue,
But here’s a reminder when rent is due,
Pay rent by the 1st,
It’s late on the 6th,
If you pay rent on time,
Late fees won’t hassle your mind!
Time To Fall Behind
Remember that Daylight Saving Time ends
November 4th. Turn your clocks back one
hour and take advantage of the extra time
to sleep. For once you can snooze and not
lose!
Poppin’ Good Trivia
October is National Popcorn Poppin’ Month.
• The average American eats about 60 quarts
of popcorn annually.
• Ideally, popcorn should be heated to a
temperature of 400 to 460 degrees Fahrenheit
to properly pop.
• There are about 1,600 popcorn kernels in
one cup of unpopped popcorn.
• The world’s largest popcorn ball weighed in
at 2,000 pounds.
• Popcorn is the world’s number one selling
snack food and is also the world’s most
profitable snack food.
• To grow popcorn, it takes about 28,000 seeds
planted per acre.
• One cup of air-popped popcorn contains just
31 calories, one gram of protein, six grams of
carbohydrate, one gram of fiber, and a trace
of fat.
Personal Growth
Without continual growth and progress, such words
as improvement, achievement, and success have
no meaning. - Benjamin Franklin
Growth begins when we begin to accept our own
weakness. - Jean Vanier
There are no such things as limits to growth,
because there are no limits to the human capacity
for intelligence, imagination, and wonder.
- Ronald Reagan
Change and growth take place when a person has
risked himself and dares to become involved with
experimenting with his own life.
- Herbert A. Otto
Got Milk?
In response to low-carb and low-fat diet fads, many people have sworn off milk products. Others may be
sensitive to the effects of milk on their digestive or respiratory systems.
There is a benefit to drinking milk, however, that those who have given it up are missing. Milk can
positively affect your mood. It is high in whey protein, which is a rich source of the amino acid tryptophan.
Whey decreases physiological responses to stress, can enhance your mood, and boost memory performance.
A 2002 study conducted by Dutch and Yale University researchers found that whey increases tryptophan in
the brain, which in turn leads to a higher production of the chemical serotonin. This body chemical boosts
your mood and has the potential to enhance your brain’s performance during stressful times.
Whey has also been found to aid in weight loss, as it plays an important role in limiting hepatic fatty acid
synthesis. This means that muscle tissue burns more fat when exercising. Whey also can help with mild
depression.
So, what is the best way to get milk in your diet without any negative side effects? Try adding low-fat or
fat-free milk sources such as yogurt, cottage cheese, and cultured dairy beverages like kefir. You can also
add whey powder to a daily smoothie. Or simply drink some milk. Most negative effects come from
drinking too much milk. An 8-ounce glass, one cup, of fat-free organic milk every few hours will boost
your mood and give you a steady stream of energy for the entire day.
Fall Crafting
As the weather begins to get cooler, and days get shorter, we spend more time indoors. Tired of TV?
Try out these craft ideas!
Fall Placemats
Purchase cloth placemats in fall colors. Cut an apple in half and dip the apple, cut side down, into fabric
paints. Stamp onto the placemat in decorative patterns. Follow the directions on the paints to set the color
to the fabric. These make great table decorations for Thanksgiving.
Leaf Print Stationery
Collect fallen leaves that haven’t dried out yet. Dip in poster paint and stamp on pretty paper and
envelopes. Tie a set of several sheets of paper and envelopes together with a fall-colored ribbon. This
makes a great gift.
Pumpkin Patch
Hard-boil some eggs. Dye them orange using food coloring. Use a black permanent marker to draw jacko-lantern faces on your eggs. This is fun for a Halloween breakfast. You can also decorate with your eggs.
Use blown out and cleaned eggs, rather than hardboiled eggs. Make stands out of toilet paper cardboard
rolls that have been cut shorter and painted green. This is cute displayed on a windowsill, surrounded by a
little white picket fence made of white painted Popsicle sticks.
Caramel and Candy Apples
Fall is the perfect time to enjoy apples at the height of their seasonal goodness. After you’ve made the apple
pies and applesauce, whip up some candy and caramel apples to share with family and friends. These recipes
make it easy to enjoy these goodies.
Candy Apples
To prepare your apples, wash and dry them completely. Insert a wooden skewer or Popsicle stick into each
apple. Butter a cookie sheet and set aside. In a heavy saucepan, mix 2 cups of sugar with 3/4 cup of water,
1/2 cup light corn syrup, and a few drops of red food coloring. Bring to a boil, without stirring. Allow to boil
until the mixture is 290 degrees on a candy thermometer. Dip each apple into the mixture, turning the apple
until it is completely covered. Take care, as the mixture is very hot. Set each apple on the cookie sheet and
let cool completely. Makes about 8 candy apples.
Caramel Apples
Butter a cookie sheet and set aside. In a heavy saucepan, place about 48 unwrapped caramels (a 14 ounce
bag). Add two tablespoons water or milk. Heat over low heat until the caramels are melted, stirring
constantly. Dip each apple into the mixture, turning the apple until it is completely covered. Set each apple
on the cookie sheet and let cool completely. Makes about 8 caramel apples.

Kids Say the Darndest Things!
Even though they’re young, kids can come up with some gems of wisdom. Here are just a few words to live
by, courtesy of some clever kids:
• Never trust a dog to watch your food.
• When you want something expensive, ask your grandparents.
• Never smart off to a teacher whose eyes and ears are twitching.
• Wear a hat when feeding sea gulls.
• Never try to hide a piece of broccoli in a glass of milk.
• Never ask for anything that costs more than five dollars when your parents are doing taxes.
• Don’t ever be too full for dessert.
• Don’t pick on your sister when she’s holding a baseball bat.
• Never do pranks at a police station.
• Never tell your little brother that you’re not going to do what your mom told you to do.
• Stay away from prunes.
• Never dare your little brother to paint the family car.
