A BRIEF HISTORY & AWARDS FOR BSF FOUNDERS
Inthemid1990s,therewasagrowingfeelingthatouryouthwereincrisis.Despitethecomputerrevolution,the
increasing availability of the internet, and good facilities in our public schools, the results in education were
becomingworseinsteadofbetter.Manystudents,especiallyblackmales,weredroppingout.Gangswereforming.
Ourcommunitywassuffering.Whatcouldbedonetoreversethistrend?
AfteryearsofdiscussionswithentitiessuchastheMinistryofEducation(MOED),Harvard,OutwardBound,andthe
Sea Education Association, we understood that experientially learning by doing is much more likely to stick than
academically learning by memory. Along with MOED, we started designing experiential education programs that
couldbetiedintotheeducationalsystemanddeliveredtoafullclassofstudentsonaregularbasis.
A traditional sailing vessel would provide a tight community, away from distractions, with potential to deliver
exciting and meaningful programs: planning trips, hoisting sails, navigating reefs, preparing meals, maintaining
safety, experiencing nature, manning anchor watches, etc. It would also embrace our rich and diverse maritime
historyand connect ourpast with our future.Key areas of theshipwouldbe mini-classroomswithgroup spaces,
programs and teaching styles where character development was on equal footing with academics. Areas such as
the cockpit, galley, engine room, and navigation area would all be rich learning environments for youth
development, for groups of students to apply themselves, benefit from teamwork and mentoring, grow in selfconfidence, andexperiencesuccess.Donecorrectly, thiswouldallowourprogramstopositivelyChangeLivesOne

THE DREAM MATCH RACE – NEWPORT BERMUDA RACE 2016 - Jay Kempe
Before the start of the 2016 Newport Bermuda Race,
