1. TheFallSemesterbeginsonMonday,September11andendsonFriday,
December15.Studygroupsare13or14weeksinduration.Alimitednumber
ofshort-durationstudygroupswillbeconsidered,including7-weekintensive
studygroups.Pleasenote:Studygroupsthatmeeton
Wednesday/Thursday/FridaywillbeimpactedbytheThanksgivingholiday,
November22-24,whenNorthwesternUniversityisclosedforbusiness,from
3pmonNovember22nd.Pleasebearthisinmindwhenplanningyour
syllabus.

6. Remember,yourdescriptionshouldhaveamarketingedge,itshould
challenge,butitshouldnotdeceive.Itshouldincludethegoalorvalueofthe
studygroup;anypre-requisitesofspecializedknowledgeneeded,andinclude
allsourcematerialtitles,authors,publishers,etc.Trytointriguethereaderby
describingthepurposeofyourstudygroupfirst,beforeprovidingthespecifics
ofyoursourcematerials.Pleasenotetheformatusedforbookandfilmtitles

Thisstudygrouptargetsreaderswhoenjoyexploringliteraturefrommanycultures
andstyles—classictomodern,fromAeschylustoAtwood,RothtoRushdie,
ShakespearetoShaw—andcombinesthe
joyofreadingwiththepleasureofdiscussion.Weusuallydevotetwoweeksto
eachbooktoassureacomprehensiveandmeaningfuldiscussion.Forthe
spring,wearedoingathemedsemester—howwaraffectsliterature—and
wewilldiscussbooksandplaysfromclassictimestothepresentthattakewar
astheirtheme.Wewillstartwithaone-weekdiscussionofAgamemnonby
Aeschylus,thenHenryVbyShakespeare,TheRedBadgeofCouragebySteven
Crane,ColdMountainbyCharlesFrazier,AllQuietontheWesternFrontbyEric
Romarque,TheEnglishPatientbyMichaelOndaate,TheThingsTheyCarriedby
TimO’Brien,and,finally,TheQuietAmericanbyGrahamGreene.Inthislongrunningstudygroupwehavereadover200authorsand400worksoffiction.

Joinusaswecontinueour“roadtrip”aroundtheUnitedStates,exploringregional
characteristicsofAmericanart,literature,andmusic.Thissemesterwe’retravelingto
America’sheartland,theMidwest.Amongothertopics,we’lllookattheenduring
imagesofagrarianandsmalltownlifecreatedbyregionalistpainterslikeGrantWood
andThomasHartBentonandliterarymasterslikeSinclairLewisandSherwood
Anderson.We’llfocus,too,ontheindustrializationoftheMidwestincitieslikeDetroit,
wheretheJewisharchitectAlbertKahn,MexicancommunistmuralistDiegoRivera,and

eastcoastmodernistCharlesSheelercreatedimagesofindustryfortheanti-Semitic
capitalistHenryFord.Thisstudygroupmakesuseofacombinationofclass
presentations,readings,discussions,andvideo.Thereisnotext:resourceswillbe
publishedonourCanvassiteandhandedoutinclass.Participantsshouldbewillingto
researchandpresentindividualartists,authors,andtopicstothegroup.Joinusaswe
hopfromcoasttocoastonthiscross-disciplinarytour,exploringtherichdiversityof
culturalactivityinAmerica.Weguaranteemanysurprisesalongtheway.
