Here are some good reasons you should consider one of our colleges or universities. Students and Degrees In fall 2015, Minnesota’s Private Colleges enrolled 58,702 students. Minnesota’s Private Colleges award about 30% of the state’s four-year degrees. For a listing of which colleges have certain majors, check out the majors grid on pages 27-29 or search our College Finder tool at www.mnprivatecolleges.org/college-finder. Our share of degrees for specific areas of study: y 49% of all physical science degrees y 45% of all nursing degrees y 38% of all foreign language degrees y 33% of all biological science degrees y 33% of all business degrees y 32% of all mathematics and statistics degrees y 31% of all visual and performing arts degrees y 22% of all education degrees (many future teachers from our colleges do not major in education, but complete a liberal arts major in the field of their choice) Excellence Minnesota’s Private Colleges are committed to undergraduate teaching with: y y y y One professor for every 12 students 61% of classes with fewer than 20 students and 99% with fewer than 50 students Courses taught by highly qualified faculty — 80% of full-time faculty hold doctorates or other terminal degrees 66% of private college students graduate within four years — the best rate in Minnesota and the Midwest We asked graduates of Minnesota’s private colleges and universities about their college experience and compared the results with national public universities in a six-state area. Our alumni reported that: y y y y 2 Compared to the public university students, they experienced stronger levels of faculty interaction, tied to smaller class sizes, classes taught by professors and personal interaction with faculty. They had higher levels of academic involvement (internships, off-campus study and research and tutoring than students at regional national public universities and national highly selective private colleges. They were highly satisfied with their education. They believed their education prepared them well for life and career, through the development of writing skills, leadership, moral principles and a sense of purpose in life. Minnesota’s Private Colleges Transfer Guide Access and Diversity y In 2015, nearly 3,000 students transferred to one of Minnesota’s Private Colleges; 24% of all new students on campus are transfer students. y 21% of our students are first-generation college students, meaning that they are the first in their family to go to college. y In the fall of 2015, 23% of new entering students were students of color. y More than 7,600 undergraduate students of color, excluding international students, enroll at Minnesota’s Private Colleges. FINANCIAL AID We want prospective students and their families to know that ability, motivation and values are more important than their bank balance. Most students and their families are surprised to learn that: y More than 31% of private college students come from families with incomes below $50,000 — about the same proportion as at the state’s public four-year colleges and universities. y 95% of our first-year students receive grants and scholarships that don’t have to be paid back. y Our institutions provide more than $523 million in institutional grants and scholarships each year. y Thanks to financial aid, the average amount that families actually pay for tuition is considerably less than the posted price — about half. y Grants, scholarships, low-interest loans and work-study opportunities are available at private colleges to help cover tuition, fees, room and board, books and miscellaneous expenses. See list of all tuition and fees at www.mnprivatecolleges.org/how-pay/what-does-it-cost. y Transfer scholarships are available based on leadership and academic achievements and vary by campus. Please contact the college admissions offices to obtain application requirements and scholarship deadlines. Student financial aid programs sponsored by the federal government include: y y y Federal Pell Grant Program Federal Stafford Student Loan Program Perkins Loan Program The State of Minnesota also helps students through: y y y The Minnesota State Grant Program College Work Study Student Educational Loan Fund (SELF) Don’t assume you can’t afford a private college. Discover where you can pursue your academic interests! Add in sports and arts that interest you: • varsity athletics programs (16, such as basketball, tennis and soccer) • club sports (39, such as rugby, cycling and karate) • fine arts offerings (36, such as symphony orchestras, gospel choirs and literary magazines) With the College Finder, you can search for these activities on their own — or in combination with your search for an academic interest. Looking for graduate, certificate or licensure programs? You can search for these areas, too. And you can search all academic programs for evening/weekend offerings, as well as those offered online (entirely or in a blended format). 2016-17 Locations Moorhead Concordia College Duluth The College of St. Scholastica Collegeville Saint John’s University St. Joseph Minneapolis Augsburg College Minneapolis College of Art and Design College of Saint Benedict St. Paul St. Peter Gustavus Adolphus College Mankato Bethany Lutheran College Northfield Carleton College St. Olaf College Bethel University Concordia University, St. Paul Hamline University Macalester College St. Catherine University University of St. Thomas Winona Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota Minnesota Private College Council Bremer Tower 445 Minnesota Street, Suite 500 St. Paul, Minnesota 55101 Phone:651-228-9061 Toll-free:888-PRI-COLL Fax:651-228-0379 Email:[email protected] Web:www.mnprivatecolleges.org September 2016
