The software that you must have installed on your computer to open an eBook is Adobe Reader. Q: Will software other than Adobe Reader allow me to open an eBook? In order to open a protected eBook, you must have Adobe Reader installed on your computer. Q: I have or am thinking about purchasing a Kindle, can I open an eBook with mobile e-reader devices? The Kindle and Sony eReader does not have the functionality to unlock protected eBooks at this time. Q: I cannot install software on the computer I’m using; can I still open an eBook? At this time, Adobe Reader is the only software that allows the opening and viewing of a protected eBook. The University of Phoenix ground campus computers have Adobe Reader installed and are available for you to use during business hours. To locate a campus near you, please visit http://www.phoenix.edu/campus-locations.html. If you can locate another computer (family or friend’s computer) which has Adobe Reader installed, please refer to the Settings section to adjust the Adobe Reader settings prior to attempting to open the eBook. Open Adobe Reader 2. Click Edit (For Windows based) or Reader (For Apple Macintosh OS X) 3. Click Preferences 4. Click JavaScript under the Categories list on the left side of the window: 5. Ensure that Enable Acrobat JavaScript is checked and Enable global object security policy is unchecked. 6. Click Security (Enhanced) under the Categories list on the left side of the window Page 7 7. Uncheck Enable Enhanced Security 8. Click Trust Manager under the Categories list on the left side of the window 9. Click the Change Settings button 10. Click the radio button next to Custom setting (A dot will appear in the circle) 11. Enter ppdf.phoenix.edu into the Host Name field and Click Allow Page 8 12. Click the OK button at bottom right of the open window 13. Close Adobe Reader Page 9 Unlocking Procedure Follow the steps to unlock and open an eBook successfully 1. From the screen stating: This selection is not available for browser viewing. Please click “Download eBook”, Click Download eBook. 2. Click on the chapter you would like to read. Page 10 3. Upon clicking on the chapter you wish to read, you will be presented with (2) pop-up windows: The first window is the eBook Collection Download window followed by the File Download window. 4. From the File Download window, Click Open if you would like to open the eBook without saving the eBook to your computer. Click Save if you would like to save the eBook to your computer. Page 11 5. Upon clicking Open or Save, the following window will appear: 6. Click in the User Name field. The following message pop-up will appear stating that if the eBook has areas in which you may type into, the data that you enter into the eBook will not be saved once it is closed. Click the Close button. Page 12 7. Upon clicking the Close button, the eBook login screen will appear once again. 8. Click into the User Name field and enter your eCampus Username. Click into the Password field and enter your password and Click Unlock. 9. Upon clicking Unlock, a prompt will appear asking whether or not you would like to be automatically signed in to this eBook the next time you open it. * If you are on a public computer, Click No. * If you are on your personal computer Click Yes. 10. After clicking Yes or No, the eBook is ready for viewing and you may scroll down to view the first page of the chapter. Page 13
