during the program. PMEA regulations also forbid the use of cameras
during the performance. An official color photograph of the chorus
has been taken and can be ordered in the lobby at the conclusion of the
concert. A professionally-produced recording of the concert can also be
ordered in the lobby at the conclusion of the concert.

On behalf of the East Lycoming School District, I would like to welcome
you to the PMEA District 8 Chorus Festival. We are very proud to host
this festival in conjunction with the Williamsport Community Arts
Center. There could not be a more majestic and appropriate setting for
this concert than the Williamsport Community Arts Center. This stage
has been home to many famous performers and today will reverberate
with the sound of many “soon to be famous” musicians.
The students participating in this festival will go on to do many
great things in their lives. Because of their musical experiences, they
have learned the importance of self-discipline, commitment, selfmotivation, hard work and goal setting.
We would be remiss if we did not thank all of our host families, students,
parents, school districts and music educators that have all given so
freely of their time and talents to make this festival successful.
With great pride, we thank you for attending today’s performance and
for supporting education and the arts.

Welcome
On behalf of Hughesville High School, I would like to welcome you to the
Community Arts Theater for the 2013 PMEA District 8 Chorus Concert.
I know the students in front of you are a special and talented group
that has been an honor for us to have at Hughesville High School during
this festival. I would like to recognize and thank our choral directors,
especially Hughesville’s very own Mr. Brian Barkley, for their countless
hours working directly with our students and keeping music alive in
our schools. I would like to thank the Community Arts Theater for
opening your doors for this event today. Your support is appreciated.
To all the parents, families, and friends of our performers, I invite you to
enjoy this afternoon’s concert and thank all of you for your support of
music education programs in your schools.

Hughesville High School Principal
Dr. Anthony T. Leach
Anthony T. Leach, professor of music and music education at The
Pennsylvania State University is director of The University Choir,
Essence of Joy and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in
choral music education. Leach holds a Ph.D. in music education, the
M.M. in conducting from Penn State University and the B.S. in Music
Education from Lebanon Valley College, Annville, PA. During the 20092010 academic year, Leach served as Penn State Laureate Professor in
the arts.
Mr. Leach taught music in Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York City
for fourteen years. His choirs have performed at festivals throughout
the United States and Canada as well as tours of England, France,
Scotland, Italy, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Austria, Taiwan, South
Korea, Japan and South Africa. He has served as a guest conductor
for international choral events in Taiwan, the Philippines, Venezuela,
France and Japan. He also served for ten years as music consultant at
the Maryland Summer Center for the Arts at Goucher College, Towson,
Md. He has appeared as a guest conductor for choral festivals and workshops in Washington, DC; Maryland, Florida, Pennsylvania, New Jersey,
Utah, Vermont, Virginia, New York, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri,
Nebraska, North Carolina and Connecticut. Leach was co-conductor
of the 2004 World Youth Choir sponsored by the International
Federation of Choral Musicians in South Korea. He was an
accompanist for The United Negro College Fund Choir (NYC) and has
accompanied the Howard University Concert Choir, Washington, DC.
For 23 years, Leach served as music director of the Capital Area Music
Association, Harrisburg, PA. He is a past national chair of the American
Choral Directors Association Repertoire & Standards Committee on
Multicultural & Ethnic Perspectives and past chair of the ACDA Eastern
Division Urban Coalition. Currently, he serves as artist in residence at
New Bethel Baptist Church, Washington, DC.
Dr. Leach has presented seminars and workshops for numerous
professional and music organizations in America and beyond. Some
of the seminar topics have included the following: ‘Print Resources in
Black Gospel Music for Choral Directors,’ ‘Two Generations of Burleigh:
Harry T. Burleigh and Glenn E. Burleigh,’ ‘Black Gospel Music: Strategies
and Techniques for Performance and Non-Performance Music
Classes.’ His article, “Does Gospel Music Have A Place In General Music?”
was published in General Music Today, Winter, 1993. His seminar, ‘A
Spiritual For The New Millennium’ was presented at the Second IFMC
Multicultural and Ethnic Music Conference held in Jokkmokk, Sweden
in 2003. New arrangements of African American Spirituals by Moses
Hogan, Marvin Curtis, Rosephanye Powell, Roland Carter, Keith
Hampton, Glenn Burleigh and Robert Morris were included in this
presentation. As a recitalist, Dr. Leach has presented organ dedications
and concerts in the eastern region of the United States as well as Ohio.
He is also piano accompanist for numerous faculty and student
recitals at Penn State. He is a member of The American Choral
Directors Association, National Association for Music Education,
International Federation of Choral Musicians and the Gospel Music
Workshop of America.
Dr. Mark Lehnowsky
The arrangement of “America The Beautiful” was commissioned by
Dr. Leach for the District 8 Choral Festival.
Mark Lehnowsky has received a B.M. in Music Composition, a B.S. in
Economics, and a Juris Doctorate from the Pennsylvania State
University. After a brief stint in the legal world, life brought him back
to music. Mark’s music has been performed all across the country,
including commercials aired in ESPN. Recently, Penn State’s Glee Club
performed a newly-commissioned work, Everyone Burst Out Singing, in
Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh, and PMEA Region II Choir performed Bringers
at Ridgway High School in Ridgway, PA. Mark founded and directed for
nine years Shades of Blue, Penn State’s most prestigious a cappella group.
For three years, he was the Assistant Director of Essence of Joy, under
the direction of Dr. Anthony Leach. Essence of Joy recently performed
Wade in the Water at the ACDA national convention in Chicago. He
studied choral conducting under two-time Grammy Award winner
Dr. Christopher Kiver, who performs Mark’s music frequently. Mark is
the winner of several International Championship of Collegiate A
Cappella “Best Arrangement” Awards. In addition to writing
vocal music, Mark has written two short (20 minute) film scores: Iowa
is Closed Today, and has written works for music theatre, Penn State’s
Marching Blue Band, chamber orchestra, solo instrumentalist, and
