In 1YB7, seven people were employed at the Continental Jade site, including bulldozer operator D. McFarlane and manager Kirk Makepeace. The work program started June 15 and was completed October 8, 1987. Total expenditures were approximately 845,000. txtensive work with the USH bulldozer with ripper included road repairs and trenching in several areas. The original "wire-saw1' jade occurrence, from which 300 tons had previously been mined, was extended along strike. two other areas of altered rock with jade potential were trenched in this area, and work was also done in the "Volcanic Ridge" area, in which tremolite had been discovered in 1972. The "New Jade" showing discovered in 1972 was re-examined trenched with encouraging results. and Snow and ice conditions necessitated a halt in exploration until the 1988 summer season. Rt t h e "New Jade" site, discovered in 1972, drilling programs in 1973 and 1977 had established that narrow bands of high quality nephrite occur at t h e contact of serpentine and a leucocratic, si 11-1 i k e intrusion. Excavation in October uncovered a band of high quality nephrite 1 0 inches wide, but s n o w conditions prevented definition of dimensions of t h e zone. T h i s area should b e further explored in 1988. She & exploration program w a s successful in proving up In t h e order of 400-450 t o n s of moderate quality jade, which, subject t o drill testing, should provide a considerable quantity of s a l e a b l e material in 1988. Several a r e a s remain t o b e prospected: 1) Rdditional prospecting in t h e northern part of t h e claims will likely uncover new boulders and in-situ jade. Additional ground magnetic surveys would b e useful t o delineate a r e a s of favorable contacts of serpentine/country rock. (Refer t o 1974 geophysical maps). The magnetic surveying would require a picketed grid, a s compass control is not reliable i n t h e highly magnetic area. 2 ) Several boulders of black j a d e a r e known. Bo-Chin S u indicated about 120 t o n s was present in t w a large boulders, north of t h e Camp Area. 3) Small tonnages of relatively good quality j a d e may b e recovered from t h e "New Jade1' deposit , where Bo-Chin S u calculated reserves of 4 1 3 tons. It is estimated because of t h e narrow z o n e s and steep dip that perhaps only 1 0 % of t h i s amount may eventually b e recovered. 4i Additional diamond drilling is warranted in t h e Wire Saw Pit a r e a and on t h e "Volcanic Ridge" deposit. Any new areas discovered by prospecting in 1988 will likely b e drill tested. 5 ) Drill testing of t h e Volcanic Ridge deposit (Area C of 19731, may result in t h e definition of further reserves. Characteristically, j a d e pods may b e isolated or may b e a s "clusters" of boulder-li ke masses. Of t e n t h e clearing of o n e jade m a s s will reveal other masses nearby. P r i v a t e Report f o r t h e C o n t i n e n t a l Jade Ltd., (Reproduced from S.F.Leaming, 1978). The Trembleur intrusions a r e considered t o be partly or wholly of pre-Late Triassic age, and a r e confined t o areas of Cache Creek Group rocks of L a t e Paleozoic age. Much faulting, shearing and fracturing of the ultramafic masses was noted by Armstrong and alteration is present along many contacts. Some is of carbonate-quartz-mariposite type which a s Patterson (1973) noted, probably formed in Eocene t i m e during late stage activity on t h e Pinchi fault zone. This type of alteration is not associated with t h e formation of nephrite. A deposit of nephrite was found by Mrs. W. Robertson on the north side of O'ne-ell Creek 5.6 km from its confluence with Middle River and about 8 km northwest of t h e summit of Mount Sidney Williams. The property is known a s t h e J a d e Queen. In a study of t h e deposit Fraser (1972) stated, "The nephrite in this deposit occurs as veins and lenses in a zone of foliated tremolite-chlorite rock developed a t t h e c o n t a c t between serpentinite of t h e Trembleur intrusions, and cherts, quartzites and argillites of t h e Cache Creek Group". The largest mass of nephrite, and t h e only one exposed a t t h e surface, is on the north side of t h e creek. It is 7 m wide and has an average true thickness of 1.5 m. Information from a drillhole indicates t h a t t h e nephrite extends for a t least 9 m, but t h a t its thickness decreases t o 0.45 m. Using these figures, a maximum of about 200 tonnes may be calculated. Fraser described a slab of nephrite a t t h e base of t h e in situ deposit a s weighing approximately 150 tonnes. Two other nephritic lenses w e r e intersected in drillholes, one was 15 cm thick, t h e other about I m but both were described a s seminephrite. No e s t i m a t e of reserves in boulder form was made. In view of lack of production since 1969 it may be concluded t h a t some published estimates must be revised downward. The diagrammatic section through t h e main lode shown on Figure 15, is derived from a map accompanying Fraser (1972). The interesting feature of this deposit is t h e tremolitechlorite alteration zone developed between t h e serpentinite and the Cache Creek sedimentary rocks. These a r e greenish grey in contrast t o t h e usual whitish contact reaction zones o r "whiterock" of most nephrite occurrences. They a r e mainly tremolite in fibrous form approaching a nephritic texture in places and it seems possible t h a t some of t h e material could have been mistakenly included in estimates of nephrite reserves. According t o Fraser (1972), t h e Jade Queen nephrite includes t r u e nephrite of Turner's classification. The t u f t s in t h e nephritic base range from 0.01 t o 0.20 mm in length. In schistose nephrite, aggregates a r e 0.02 t o 0.10 mm wide by 0.10 t o 1.30 mm long and t h e seminephrites may include groups up t o 1.90 mm by 5.40 mm. A spinel-group mineral, commonly picotite, is always present and forms crystal up t o 1.3 by 0.90 mm. Rounded and fractured chromite is also noted in crystals up t o 0.5 mm in diameter or a s rims on picotite. According t o Fraser, diopside is present in subhedral crystals or corroded remnants in some thin sections. Uvarovite garnet was found in several thin sections, usually as replacement rims on corroded picotite, but also a s discrete grains in elongated aggregates parallel t o t h e schistosity. Chlorite occurs a s aggregates of tiny flakes in irregular patches generally elongated in t h e direction of schistosity and comprises up t o 10 per c e n t of t h e rock. Titanite is present as brownish microlites in almost all thin sections. Minor amounts of carbonate, talc, pyrite and phlogopite were noted in some specimens. Plate 10 shows a photomicrograph of typical nephrite from this deposit. Mount Ogden On Mount Ogden a number of sill-like serpentinite bodies with associated faults and contact reaction zones occur in C a c h e Creek Group sediments along the western slope of t h e mountain. The productive ground is held by two separate companies, Far North J a d e Limited and Continental J a d e Limited. The discovery of in situ nephrite a t t h e head of Lee Creek, a tributary of Odgen Creek, was made by 1.Owen and S. Poryko in 1969. Production of c u t blocks of nephrite was continued by New World J a d e until 1974 when t h e assets were acquired by B.C. Gem (H.K.) Limited. Since 1976 claims have been held by Continental J a d e Limited. Following t h e success of Owen and Porayko, boulders and large blocks of nephrite close t o t h e bedrock source w e r e found t o t h e northwest of t h e Owen-Porayko deposit. The ground was staked by 1.Barr for Far North J a d e Limited, and intermittent production began in 1970, when L. Barr c u t high quality nephrite into small blocks and flew them out from Ogden Lake. About t h e same t i m e alluvial boulders were found on t h e creek immediately e a s t of Ogden Creek. A large block of claims was staked by Kwan Yin Limited and preparations were made for large scale production. Apparently t h e quality and/or quantity did not m e e t expectations and t h e property i s now in other hands. Examination of aeromagnetic map 5286G (published by t h e Geological Survey of Canada in 1970) offers a n explanation for t h e lack of in situ nephrite. The a r e a is underlain by a large magnetic low, indicative of Cache Creek Group sediments lacking significant a r e a s of mafic or ultramafic rocks. The boulders may have been glacially transported from t h e B.C. Gem property, or if they a r e derived from in situ deposits along t h e creek, such deposits must b e very small. The initial nephrite discovery on Mount Ogden was made a t the head of Lee Creek along a contact zone between serpentinite and Cache Creek metasediments. Most of t h e production has come from t h e locality covered by mineral claims Lee No. I, 2, 3 and 4 (PI. I I). On the main showing initial production was from colluvial blocks detached from the main lode and nearby loose blocks t h a t were transported by Pleistocene ice. At increasing distances from t h e lode, the colluvial blocks were modified by stream action t o form boulders of various sizes ranging from a few kilograms t o several tonnes. The contact reaction zone which may be up t o 30 m wide, consists of talc, schist, "whiterock" bodies, inclusions of Cache Creek sedimentary rocks and nephrite lenses (Fig. 16A). Figure 15. Photomicrographs o f nephrite from Mount Ogden Appraisal of t h e potential is difficult. Possible reserves may be from 500 t o 1000 tonnes. Probable reserves from an exposed lode and some talus blocks may yield about 50 tonnes. Typical nephrite shows microfibres 0.05 mm long with an average width of 0.02 mm (PI. 12). Minor chlorite and picotite can be seen in t h e thin section. A - Cross-section Another company, Far North Jade Limited, has worked jade claims on Mount Ogden intermittently since 1969. Initial production c a m e from large slabs and blocks of residual or talus material obviously close to t h e bedrock source. One large block, estimated t o weigh 70 tonnes (PI. 13), has been about 25 per c e n t reduced by diamond sawing. Blocks this size a r e not conveniently handled by even 36-inch diamond saw blades, but Mr. L. Barr succeeded in extracting about 20 tonnes, most of which has been removed from t h e property. The nephrite in t h e remaining block shows patches of good colour but t h e r e is considerable fracturing which reduces t h e quality. throughl'rnain showing$ .. I Other slabs and blocks were seen on t h e property and according to Mr. L. Barr (pers. comm., 1976) in situ deposits have been found. Estimates of reserves a r e speculative but a r e as high a s 200 tonnes with probable reserves of perhaps 500. Inspection of t h e sawn faces on t h e 70-tonne blocks suggests that 50 tonnes could be considered proven. I .-.-I' I , Axelgold Range 43 ++++*-+++++4 Drill Hole . B - I Nephrite has been found in t h e southern end of t h e Axelgold Range, along t h e trend of t h e Mount Ogden occurrences (Fig. 14). The deposit consists of large alluvial boulders or colluvial blocks. The property has not been seen by the writer. The owner, Mr. Frank Plut reported a production of one tonne of high quality nephrite. His estimates of reserves is 200 tonnes. From t h e reported size of some of t h e blocks it is probable t h a t they a r e very close t o the bedrock source. The a r e a is underlain by serpentinite, Cache Creek Group rocks and some granitic intrusives. Further prospecting c a n be expected t o reveal contact reaction zones with nephrite occurrences. Plan of nnew showing1' Figure 16. Diagrammatic sketches of nephrite deposits on Mount Ogden. The nephrite, which may be up t o 3 m thick, is fractured or faulted into blocks as much a s 70 t o 100 tonnes in welght. When first examined in 1970, t h e nephrite lens appeared t o be about 50 m long, 3 m wide and 5 m high giving a volume of 750 m h r about 2250 tonnes. Some of t h e material was not commercial grade, and much of i t was low grade. However, in places the nephrite was t h e finest quality found-anywhere in British Columbia. Nephrite of various grades has been found in place elsewhere on t h e property in four other apparently small occurrences. At t h e most important, "the new showing", 600 m southwest of t h e main showing, serpentinite is close t o a body of granodiorlte and may be in contact with it. A t one point along this contact, nephrite in small lenses lies within an alteration zone within t h e serpentinlte (Fig. 168). A band of nephrite 0.6 m thick was intersected in a short horizontal drillhole ten f e e t south of t h e nephrite outcrop. It appears that a contact reaction zone has developed in a tectonic inclusion and t h a t t h e later intrusion of t h e granodiorite has obscured t h e original relationship. The granodiorite included in t h e Omineca intrusives of Cretaceous age is probably not relevant t o t h e formation of t h e nephrite. Northern British Columbia; Cassiar Segment The Cassiar segment (Fig. 17) of t h e nephrite bearing belt of British Columbia follows t h e southern margin of t h e Atlin Terrane as defined by Monger (1975). A smaller but still important branch (in t e r m s of nephrite possibilities) diverges from t h e main belt north of Cry Lake and continues in a north-northwest direction into Yukon Territory. All t h e nephrite deposits in t h e Atlin Terrane occur in the eastern part of t h e belt. Most a r e in the C r y Lake map-area (104 J). C r y Lake Map-Area Nephrite in t h e Cry Lake map-area a r e associated with fault-bounded ultramafic bodies extending diagonally across t h e map-area (Fig. 18). The ultramafics a r e mainly serpentinized pyroxenite, wehrlite with small bodies of dunite, pyroxenite? and gabbro. Nephrite occurrences a r e distributed along t h e whole length of t h e serpentinite belt with a concentration towards t h e eastern end. The quality of many of these however is very low, some best described a s tremolite rock. For this reason Figure I 8 is titled nephritic rocks in t h e Cry Lake map-area. ckeproduced from S . F.
