Year 7 Assessment – an overview Homework A mark or a comment is given. Once every 2 to 3 weeks a homework stamp is used for more detailed feedback. Students are generally expected to write a response to this (in green). Assessments Every 5 to 6 weeks students are set a test or a task to check understanding and knowledge of a unit of work. This will occur at different times for different subjects. In essence, students are always working towards an assessment. Summative tests In February a mid-year test is set which checks knowledge and understanding of work set to date. An end of year test in June tests work from the whole year. Grading Students are awarded a P (‘Progress’) grade where appropriate. P- = below expectation P= in line with expectations P+ = above expectation Significant pieces of work are also graded as follows: Grade/MEP Descriptor 7Y Not Yet secure The student has had access to the section of the specifications but has yet to show competency in the objective (i.e. taught but not learnt) 7M EMerging There is evidence of a basic level of competency but the student may need support. The objective is not fully secure (i.e. it has not been mastered, but the knowledge, skill or level of understanding is emerging) 7S Secure The student displays competency in the objective; the knowledge, skill or level of understanding is secure – it has been mastered, even if only at a basic level 7H Highly Proficient The student displays a good level of competency in the objective, which is used in a highly proficient way. This means that the knowledge, skill or level of understanding has been fully mastered and is applied confidently to extend learning. 7X Exceptional There is an exceptionally high level of competence in the objective which has been fully mastered and applied with a high level of proficiency Expectations Students are told what their minimum expected level of progress is for Year 7 in mid-September. This is referred to as their MEP. This is recorded in the inside cover of each exercise book on a Progress Chart. So for example, if a student has a MEP of 7S, it is expected that work should always meet the 7S standard. Students are also set an aspirational target for their work (AP). Staff will review performance throughout the year and will adjust targets accordingly. How MEPs and APs are set These are set according to KS2 results. The English MEP/AP is based on English results The maths MEP/AP is based on the maths results The MEP/AP for all other subjects is based on both the English and maths result, but with extra weighting given to English. This is to reflect the importance of literacy skills across the curriculum. Progression This chart shows the anticipated lines of progress from KS2 outcomes to GCSE. This is based on Trackingdata.
