School-Wide Positive
Behavior Support
Program
2012- 2013
Dear Parent/Legal Guardian,
We are proud to announce that our school is participating in a very important district-wide
initiative, Positive School-Wide Behavior Support (PBS). It is a program designed to
teach responsibility, safety, and respect for all at Shaler Area Elementary School. The overall
goals of PBS are aimed at increasing and supporting positive behaviors school-wide and
decreasing those disruptive behaviors which might interfere with classroom instruction and
create a negative school environment.
As a staff, we have created a theme which highlights several important expectations which will
enable us to create a positive school environment. Our theme is “SAES Shows Titan Pride”.
We are using PRIDE as an acronym to illustrate the following•Positive Attitude
•Respect for All
•Integrity
•Do the Right Thing
•Effort Towards Learning
We have developed expectations or rules for all settings in our school relating to this theme.
You will notice that throughout our school, these expectations are posted in all areas. During
the first few weeks of school, we will be teaching and modeling these expectations in specific
settings including the classroom, hallway, cafeteria, restroom, etc. Students will receive
frequent reviews of the expectations and be acknowledged when they demonstrate them.
At the end of September, we will be implementing an incentive program called the Titan Top
Ten which is a way to reward students for following these expectations. Please look for more
information to come regarding the Titan Top Ten.
PBS also emphasizes that students understand the consequences if disruptive behavior is
exhibited. These consequences must be consistent, predictable, and fair for all students. Our
PBS program is aligned with our district policies concerning disruptive behavior. However, our
goal is to intervene before these behaviors become problematic for a student. Therefore, we
have incorporated a time-out process for any student who is unable to redirect his/her behavior
after sufficient verbal and visual warnings. This 5-10 minute time-out process within the
classroom provides the student with the opportunity to complete a Think Sheet and later
conference with the classroom teacher. The student is able reflect on the disruptive behavior
and establish a personal goal for making a positive choice the next time. There are certain more
serious behaviors which warrant immediate referral to the main office. These are outlined in the
attached packet.
Throughout the school year, we will be using the data from the office referrals to determine
additional supports and needs for individual students. We ask that you review this packet with
your child. As part of our upcoming Curriculum Nights, we , again, will review our PBS program
with you. As always, we thank you for giving us your support in our efforts to continue to make
Shaler Area Elementary School a great experience for your and your child.
Kindly,
Ms. Cynthia Foht
