December 4, 2015 - City of Franklin, TN

December 4, 2015
The 2015 Tree
lighting was a big
success with
thousands showing up
for the
festivities. Talented
students from Music
City Strings, Franklin
Intermediate School
and Centennial High
School made the
festivities merrier with
their young voices and
violins. Special
appearances from the
Grinch and Singer
Matthew West made
the presentation even
more fun. Thank you
to our sponsors, Spring
Tree Media, Middle
Tennessee Electric
Corp. Hyundai of Cool
Springs and Williamson Medical Center, who sponsored the free photos with Santa! Special
thanks also to our Communications Team, Facilities Management, Streets Department,
Police, and Admin staff who worked to make this year’s event the best it could be. Great job
by our team! There are discount coupons for the Opryland Grinch production available at
the front desk in Admin. They are available while supplies last.
In an event at City of
Franklin Police
Headquarters, Franklin
Police Officers and City
Officials honored the 142
cumulative years of
service of five retiring
Franklin Police
Officers. Officer Mike
Spearnock, Officer Jim
Gibson, Officer Roy
Brown, Detective David
Dixon and Lt. Carl Smith
were honored at the
ceremony. “The service of these officers is distinguished, appreciated, and will never be
forgotten,” said Chief Deborah Faulkner. “We will miss seeing them every day at
Headquarters, but hope that the Franklin Police Department will always be a special place
they consider home.” Each of the retirees say that they have built lasting friendships in the
Department, and that – more than anything, it is the daily camaraderie they will miss most.

Some things to be aware of this weekend.

On Saturday, December 5th, the American Red Cross, Franklin Fire Department
and Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office will install smoke alarms and teach
people fire safety in Franklin Estates I and II. Seven times a day someone in this
country dies in a home fire. Countless others suffer injuries. To combat these tragic
statistics, the Red Cross and the State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) have developed
programs to prevent and reduce home fire deaths in Tennessee. The December 5
event will focus on Franklin Estates Mobile Home Parks I and II. Volunteers will
meet at 1320 West Main St. at 9:00 a.m. with canvassing beginning at 10:00
a.m. Red Cross Home Fire Campaign sponsors include Allstate, CHI Memorial and
Memorial Foundation. For more information on Get Alarmed, visit
https://www.tn.gov/commerce/article/fire-get-alarmed.

As you’re making a list and checking it twice, Franklin Firefighters are hoping
you’ll consider adding a gift for a child who’s part of their 8th Annual
Christmas Toy and Clothing Drive. The Franklin Firefighters kicked off the drive
this week, with gift requests of more than 300 Williamson County children adorning
the holiday fire hydrant displays outside Franklin fire stations and Franklin City
Hall. To participate, select a gift request card from one of the displays and purchase
the single item requested on the card. Return new, unwrapped gifts with the card
attached to a fire station or City Hall by Sunday, December 6th. Monetary donations
are also accepted at Franklin Fire Administration in City Hall or Avenue
Bank. Checks should be made payable to Franklin Firefighters Charities. All
contributions are tax deductible. For more information please contact the Franklin
Fire Department at (615) 791-3270 or visit www.FranklinFirefightersCharities.org.
Fleet Management received a special “Thank You” from Fire Chief Rocky Garzarek. Here
is an excerpt of the note below.
“On behalf of the Franklin Fire Department, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you
and your staff for providing outstanding service to our department. Your department
routinely goes above and beyond and we appreciate all that you do on a daily basis to keep
our vehicles safe and available for emergency response…”
Our United Way Campaign continues! Carla Arnette with United Way will be visiting every
department over the coming weeks to discuss their agencies and how you can help those in
need. We’ve got some new things we’re planning for this year’s campaign. Last year we more than
doubled the number of donors. I’d like to keep that going. Just as last year – if we reach 50
percent participation, I will shave my head! Participation means turning in a pledge
form. Whether you make a onetime donation (of any amount!) or sign up for a payroll deduction, it
will count as participation. And everyone who turns in a pledge form will receive a special
edition “Live United” T-shirt! We’re also planning to have our Corn Hole Super Bowl and Ping
Pong Tournament in January. We’ll have more details on that next week.
It’s that time of year again, time for the annual knock-down, drag-it-out
Holiday Door Decorating contest. The competition is already afoot as
some have already started planning their winning displays! We ask that
you have your doors decorated the first week in December. Be sure to
email [email protected] if you are participating. Judges will come by
the morning of Friday, December 11 to judge and the winners will be announced at the
Christmas Breakfast happening on Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. in City Hall. There will be
a new caterer this year! Also the UGLY SWEATER contest will happen again and someone
may show up in an elf costume.
AND NEW THIS YEAR-YOU get to CHOOSE which member
of the leadership team gets to dress up like a Christmas
elf at the Christmas Breakfast. Go to this link and vote for
your favorite or least favorite and make them wear the
green at the breakfast. Thank you for your participation!

Allen Fentress of Revenue Management was the winner of the Mayor’s Parking spot a
couple weeks ago. This week, Allen is nominating Tabitha Byram of Revenue
Management. Allen said, “HOW ABOUT WE NOMINATE TABITHAT BYRAM. SHE IS ON THE
FRONT LINES WITH ME AND ANY RECOGNITION I GET SHE DESERVES AS WELL.” Tabitha,
you can begin parking in the Mayor’s spot on Monday December 7-11. Congratulations!
Thanks for all you do!
